Recently there have been some pretty big changes in the game. SPAAs with an interesting mechanic were added to the Moscow Campaign, the old AA guns were replaced with unique AAs, and AT field guns were added as a “unique” structure to the AT squad.
I still am pushing for the engineer squads to get a more durable variant of DEFENSIVE fortifications, as I’ve detailed in other posts. However, I do think that the “artillery” type fortifications of the engineer squad need a bit of a change.
Currently, both engineer squads are able to build the moveable AT field gun and the Stationary AA. Now that the AT field gun has been added to the AT squad, I’ve seen several people suggest that it be removed from the engineer squad. However, to put it on par with other squads in terms of usefulness, I don’t think that just a stationary AA is adequate, especially when it is unable to angle down to deal with ground targets as well, which the weapons of that time were not only ABLE to do, but were used in that way fairly frequently.
The Flak 30 for example:
So ultimately, my suggestion is to switch out the AT field gun and stationary AA from the engineer squad for kind of a combination between the two. It’s the gun that is currently on the AA but mounted to wheels with a SMALL shield similar to the AT field guns (I emphasize this as it would not be the size like we used to see on the Flak 38 quad barrel AA).
Doing this would allow for the weapon to be mobile, able to be used on ground units, and able to switch its ammunition type (like the SPAAs introduced to Moscow). 20mm HE and AP ammunition. Its a small enough caliber that it would require more precision than the current AT field guns to deal with Tanks, but the also have the flexibility to deal with aircraft, infantry, and light units.
AT capabilities would fall more heavily to the actual AT squads with this change.
