Type 40 grenade or Type 7 grenade as Japanese impact grenade

Fun fact: Before the deployment of Type 10 grenade in 1921,Japan only had impact grenade for their troops. Even though they made several variants of it, they didn’t give their grenade an official name, they just called it ‘‘urn-shaped grenade’’ or ‘‘grenade’’.

These types of grenades only explode while the firing pin on the top hit the target. They all have tail made with rope or fabric trailing behind the grenade ensures it travels headfirst.

Just for convenience, l am just gonna call them Type ___ grenade in this topic. Here’s the main two variants that I think it’s interesting to be add in game, the Type 40 and the Type 7 grenade.

Type 40 grenade(1907)

It’s the standardized version of the Type 38 grenade, which was designed during the Russo-Japanese War. The prototype version of Type 38 doesn’t have safety, so you need to insert the firing pin before throwing it.

The Type 40 also appears in the manga ‘‘Golden Kamuy’’

Type 7 grenade(1918)

Compare to Type 40, Type 7 grenade’s tail is made of rope. Only half of it is covered with fabric in order to hold the wooden base piece in place.

Type 7 without wooden base

Even though we don’t have the pictures of the cap of these grenade, according to the document I found. The cap is made of brass(黃銅)and the firing pin is welded together.

I haven’t studied this manual in detail yet, but it should contain information on the use of the 1918 model grenades:

Yes, this is the updated version of the document I found. 突撃教範編纂理由書之件 is the early manuscript of this one.

Is it the same type of grenade that Japanese soldiers often tapped against their helmets before throwing in many films and TV shows?

Hah, I didn’t expect to see it in a Soviet reference book on Japanese weapons from 1942.

What a fortunate find! Reading through Sayama Jiro’s latest book I’ve found a detailed section on these grenades.
Will make a suggestion post in relation to this post as supplemental sourcing.

@Aussie-Tachanka @_DELAVR It’s the Type 9(1920) grenade, which is the last version of urn-shaped grenade, it’s later replaced by the Type 10 grenade in the next year.
