The Sherman Vc "Firefly" - a BR4 tank for the Allied tech tree with great penetration

The M4A4 Sherman Vc Firefly was an upgunned M4A4 sherman, which typically mounted the 75mm M3 cannon, and replaced it with the 76mm 17-pounder gun, meant to combat more heavily armored German tanks that gave normal tanks trouble. This is different from the Sherman Ic firefly in game as it uses the M4A4’s hull as previously stated, whereas the Ic uses a hybrid hull. The 76mm 17 Pounder’s shell loadout would be the same in both fireflies (29 AP, 29 HE, and 15 APDS, and 7 smoke shells), and while these shells completely lack any high explosive filler, meaning you need to aim for weak spots, the penetration on these shells is quite high. The APDS shell, for example, can penetrate 269 millimeters of armor at 10 meters, which is enough to even shoot through the Tiger 2’s turret cheeks.

APDS versus the Tiger 2(H) frontally

All the shells available in War Thunder + their stats

The two underlined in red are the 2 types of anti-tank shells this tank would use

Putting this in the allied tech tree at BR4 will give a balanced tank that will allow BR4 allied armor to still deal with enemy tanks even in uptiers without having to use the M36 with all it’s downsides, in a normal tank package. It would best be foldered under the M4A2 (76) in the tech tree.

(Ignore the fact that it says Italy, I use this link because the British version for some reason doesn’t have the APDS shell in War Thunder)

Should the Sherman Vc Firefly be added to the Allied tech tree at BR4?

@Veekay45 made a post a few days ago which went over a bunch of Shermans that could be added to the game which included this one (Adding more iconic Shermans), but as it included a few others, not as much detail was put into the Firefly specifically, so I decided to make a suggestion focused primarily on this tank that has more detail.

Everything’s great. One correction. You said ap. I think u meant to either say apc or Apcbc

There are options for it to use the APC and APCBC, but the Ic Firefly in game uses the normal AP shell instead, so I stuck with that one.

TT Firefly needs to happen, there were like 5 times more fireflies produced than Jumbos, yet we have 2 TT Jumbos and still no TT Firefly.

While I was researching for my suggestion Adding more iconic Shermans I found something I hadn’t known before:

Apparently there were not one, not two, but three Sherman Firefly variants:

  1. Sherman Firefly Vc (M4A4 chassic) - most common, the one we need in tech tree
    image

  2. Sherman Firefly Ic (M4 chassis) - the one we have ingame as premium
    image

  3. Sherman Firefly Ic Hybrid (M4 Composite chassis) - can even be event or something

I’d be rocking this thing if I had it, rounded hull Shermans are my favourite in terms of looks.

I hope the premium version gets the dual RP-3 rocket mount on the turret, to seperate it from future mainline Fireflies.

Without the chain-reaction and automatic tank detonation mechanic of other rocket tanks, because there’s only two of them (negligible HE in totale), they’re seperated (one on each side of the turret, no way to cause a chain-reaction in the first place), and they’re placed quite a distance from both the hull and the turret (I doubt it would actually destroy the tank, even if one was detonated).

Oh, that’s enough
We already have enough more Shermans, why can’t it add more British tanks if we want a tank with British gun?

Cuz the firefly is arguably the most iconic British ww2 tank?

Do we really need a tank which did not see combat in WWII and entered service only after the war ended?

If you really care about this issue, then you can choose the challenger.
For now, basically every single one of Allied BR4 ground vehicles are related to Sherman, and they can be considered Sherman variants, whether it’s M36, Achilles, Jumbo, or Firefly. The only two exceptions are Churchill VII and M18, but those things were completely surpassed by Jumbo and M36.
Sherman SPAM must be stopped

Oh no, the most common Allied tank is the most common Allied tank…?

There must be a Firefly in the tech tree, it’s simply too common not to be there. I’ve tabled an idea for how to make the addition valuable anyway above.

Or, well, rather give a current premium a fun gimmick, freeing up a similar (but not the same) model for the tech tree. And it’s not like a event reward for a slightly different hull variant of the Firefly (with a hull MG to still make it technically different) would hurt, either.

That being said, I hope the Comet will come soon to the BR IV TT.

Could be a good opportunity to add polish speaking tank squad for allies

I’m working on this right now btw

Oh, rocket launchers, that’s really interesting. Suddenly, I remember that both the Cromwell and the Deerhound tanks can be equipped with them. A bunch of rocket launchers.

A Cromwell rocket premium would be very cool too! Cromwell rocket at BR III, Firefly rocket at BR IV.
