In light of the new update where the recoil control for all BR 5 battle rifles has been reduced -not to a considerable detrimental degree -, which brings back to mind the poor characteristics of the Germany’s neglected top tier lineup, the FG 42 1.

The recoil values for it is still astoundingly bad compared to its competitors. A hefty 38 horizontal recoil severely limits this guns ability to land consistent shots beyond one tap, and additionally it has one of the highest dispersion values as well.

I would be okay with it, if not for the fact that every other battle rifle at BR 5 shoots like a laser - the FG 42 1 by comparison is closer to realism (even though better in real life).

Comparatively speaking, this gun should not be that far off from the FG 42 2, they share the same fundamental firing action, and it wasn’t always the case that the gun had these recoil values.

I have the event paratrooper FG 42 1, purely on a weapon-weapon basis that gun is much more serviceable, though the horizontal recoil on that gun is feels significant as well now.

This iconic gun (and very advanced for its time) should not be in such a unreasonable condition. At the minimum the horizontal accuracy must be improved. However buffing the dispersion and vertical recoil also make sense historically, comparatively, and gameplay wise (for fairness and immersion). On the other hand a gun like the AVT - which could hardly sustain full auto fire effectively for a few hundred rounds before wearing out - why is it more accurate?

Before you argue that that the grenade launcher on the event gun should logically reduce the recoil, I say that this argument doesn’t hold water because: 1) Part of the grenade launcher assembly sits on one side of the weapon, this shouldn’t affect the horizontal recoil positively, 2) the the gun by default has a muzzle brake which is threaded on - exact same as the tech tree FG 42 1 (logistically speaking) - and is swapped off before attaching the grenade. Why should that have a positive effect on the recoil when the FG 42 1 also has it? The mass of the rifle grenade is not weighing down the gun while it is firing rounds.

The event rifle values are a holdover from early in the game, when the German tech tree weapon got progressively nerfed (and soviets get progressively buffed): DF has a policy to not nerf event weapons however.

Here is a rough timeline I collected of the recoil values which the FG 42 1 went through. I joined the game too late to see the better FG 42 1.
