Domestic soviet AT rocket launchers as alternatives to foreign ones - Part 1

In this topic I will suggest the addition of unique anti tank rocket launchers for the USSR which would fill the need for a domestic alternative to both lend lease and captured examples. These AT launchers may be less historically accurate but to those who prefer diversity of weapons in the game these would be welcome.

This part will focus on direct alternatives to the panzerfausts for BR 3 and 4 while the second one will consist of more unique designs for BR 2 and 3.

I am also aware that some of these had already been suggested but these two posts will serve as a more unified and refined list and a sort of archive of early soviet RPG’s and AT projectile launchers.

LPG-70

The LPG-70 launcher consisted of a 30mm tube open at both ends with a simple sight and trigger mechanism. It fired the RKG-70 70mm HEAT projectile which had a 4 finned ring stabilizer. It was the most sucessful of the early designs which eventually led to the LPG-44.

Summary:

  • Velocity of 43.8 m/s
  • 170mm of pen
  • Ability to run with the launcher
  • BR 3
Would you like to see the LPG-70 in the game? If yes, how should it be added?
  • Yes, in the tech tree
  • Yes, as an event or BP weapon
  • Yes, as a premium squad weapon

TPG-90

This launcher only differed from the LPG-70 in the size of the warhead it fired. It was basically an LPG-70 but with a slightly bigger launcher caliber (45mm tube instead of the 30mm tube of the LPG-70) made to launch the bigger RKG-90 90mm projectile.

Summary:

  • Velocity of 35.5 m/s
  • 200mm of pen
  • Ability to run with the launcher
  • BR 4

LPG-44

LPG-44

The LPG-44 light infantry rocket launcher had few differences from its predecessor. It improved almost all of its characteristics and had a new GK-70 70mm projectile which was made as the original had issues with the fuse but it had less penetration. This was the direct predecessor of the RPG-1.

Summary:

  • Velocity of 40 m/s
  • 150mm of pen
  • Faster reload than the LPG-70 and TPG-90
  • Ability to run with the launcher
  • BR 3

PTG-44

PTG-44

This launcher was a converted PTRD with a shortened barrel, relocated bipod and handle, and new sights. The 70mm AKG-70 70mm projectile was fired by 14.5mm blank rounds, it had a velocity of 58.2 m/s and a penetration of 170mm.

Summary:

  • Velocity of 58.2 m/s
  • 170mm of pen
  • BR 3

If anybody has access to some more info about these launchers please do post them in this thread as most of the sources I used are no longer available!

Here is the second part of this topic:

I have been suggesting this for years

I already suggested the tested version of the B type launcher

The LPG-70 is very similar to the tested LPG-44

I have also made a suggestion on them years ago, but a new one was needed.

I also wanted to put all of the AT launcher designs into one topic with 2 parts so it would serve as sort of an archived list of them.

It is similar, but they are still 2 seperate launchers which have different stats.

That’s why we have to always remind them because they never listen!

Is there an image of the warhead?

As far as I know there are no images of the RKG-90, only the RKG-70.

But we do know they were made by the same group of engineers and were prepared for the same comparative trials in 1944 where both launchers and warheads were tested against eachother and foregin designs.

As they were both designed by the same engineers and prepared for testing at the same time we can safely assume the RKG-90 was just an upscaled version of the RKG-70.

More images of the LPG-70 launcher and the RKG-70 projectile for reference:

A while ago, I wrote a thread about Soviet grenade launchers.

I’d recommend using photos of the RPG-1 grenade launcher. It’s essentially a direct continuation of the LPG-44, and some sources don’t even distinguish between the two. Below are photos and a video of the RPG-1.
