Charlton Automatic Rifle - A Correction, and an Addition

Charlton Automatic Rifle

A Correction, and an Addition

Introduction

Greetings and salutations, friends!

As some of you may be are aware, the Charlton Automatic Rifle recently had its rate of fire changed in the “Far Eastern Front” update of last December, to be more in-line with its historical performance. Whilst changes on historical grounds are appreciated, that change did not correct all inaccuracies of the weapon, the magazine is still left untouched.

The Magazine

The following images is of the Charlton as it currently appears in Enlisted. Note the magazine size, shape, and supposed capacity:

Whilst it is true and accurate that the Charlton Automatic had access to 30-round magazines, its appearance does not match the model we see in game.

This is what a Charlton with a 30-round mag inserted looks like, appreciate the larger size and greater curve of the magazine:

The eagle eyed among you will no doubt have noticed that it is eerily similar in appearance to a Bren gun magazine.

That is because the Charlton Automatic primarily used converted Bren gun magazines, with the bolt hold-open tab removed in order for the magazine to fit in with the shorter Lee-Enfield reciever.

Well, what magazine is the Charlton currently using then…?

The WW1-era 20-round Lee-Enfield trench mag:

The Charlton was capable of accepting both standard 10-round Lee-Enfield magazines, as well as the 20-round trench mags, because that part of the rifle’s reciever was left unaltered during its conversion from Lee-Enfield/Metford to Charlton Automatic. And, as I previously stated, 30-round Bren mags were converted with the express purpose of being used in Charltons (though, in theory, they would also fit in regular Lee-Enfields).

What should be done?

The Charlton Automatic in game is already a BR II machine gun, nerfing its magazine capacity by a third would be a hard blow. Being BR II, it can’t be downtiered, and we are left with significantly altering the gun again to simply make it remain viable, just when people have started to get used to the current version.

That is why I have an alternative that leaves the guns’ statistics unaltered, and which will also give us an additional new gun in the game. I believe this is the overall best route to go down.

  • Update the current model to use a 30-round Bren gun magazine.

No stat changes, only a model change, the gun remains exactly the same as it does now in function - only now with a magazine that matches its stated statistics.

But, what do we do with the old, but perfectly useable, magazine model…?

  • Add a 20-round Charlton as a new Select-Fire rifle in BR V using the old model.

With the 30-round version remaining a heavier “MG”, this would theoretically leave room for the 20-round version of the Automatic Rifle to have a smaller sprint-speed penalty and fulfil a different role in-game.

It would be rather odd for a weapon with a smaller magazine capacity to be a higher BR than its alternative if both were the same weapon type, especially since there are no BR I MGs. Adding it as a 20-round “Commonwealth BAR” at BR III would therefore feel rather arbitrary. This is why I believe the Select-Fire route would be the best fit. Simply giving a 20-round version the standard 100% sprint factor would already get us most of the way there.

It would also make the Charlton more unique by giving the two versions distinct roles, rather than having multiple Charltons occupying essentially the same weapon category in a balance enviornment that wouldn’t reward its existance.

Polls

What should be done with the Charlton Automatic Rifle?
  • Change the model to use the correct Bren gun magazine.
  • Nerf the magazine capacity to 20 rounds to match the current model.
  • Nerf the magazine capacity to 20 rounds to match the current model, but buff the other stats and turn it into the Commonwealth alternative to a BAR/Johnson style weapon.
  • Nothing.

While changing the stats again is an option, as is turning it into a BAR-style MG, both options rob us of having the Charlton be depicted in-game in its most common configuration - using its 30-round Bren magazine.

The Lee-Enfield trench mag was a very rare sight by the 40s, most became worn out after testing of various automatic weapons across the Commonwealth during the 1920s and 1930s, and Charlton himself made this conversion with Bren magazines in mind.

A simple model change is the most pain-free way to fix the weapons’ remaining inaccuracy, keeping the status quo whilst opening the door for new additions to the game.

If the model gets updated to the correct 30-round magazine, what should be done with the old 20-round model?
  • Add it as the Commonwealth Tech Tree BR V Select-Fire Rifle alternative.
  • Add it as an Event/BP BR V Select-Fire Rifle.
  • Add it as an Premium BR V Select-Fire Rifle.
  • Something else (comment bellow)
  • Nothing.

Why tech tree…? Consider that there are few other Commonwealth that could be justified to be in that position, all other weapons are prototypes that never saw as wide a production run as the Charltons.

Conclusion

That’s all from me on this topic. Until next time, dear readers, and remember: look both ways before you cross the road.

There was only 1500 units produced from what i see… so why should it be tech tree? Then again BRV doesn’t follow that premise… but people like to use it as a reason not to add things there so much so.

It is the most produced weapon of it’s kind, all other Commonwealth alternatives are prototypes that were never adopted and never entered production, or not even from the WW2 period. It is, as far as I can tell, also lighter than the alternatives. Making it overall the best option for a tech tree Commonwealth SF rifle.

It is actually a more historically defensible option than any US alternative, as far as I am aware - and, as you said yourself, BR V is already the land of exceptions.

By the way, help me understand something.

What is the rationale for voting against doing anything to the Charlton concerning the mag? I don’t see it - there isn’t even a “don’t change how it works” argument to be had by just changing the model. So even the crowd who don’t care about either history or faithful adaptations of guns shouldn’t really have an argument against this… I did design this suggestion to be a win-win for everyone concerned, on multiple concerns and issues.

Doubly so when the change literally opens up the door for more weapons to be added in the game…

Also, any discussion on adding a 20-round version to the game is a little pointless, if you’re against making the 20-round version available in the first place…

There is one thing about this Charlton rifle that really annoys me, though: the bullet spread is huge.

It is, specifically while moving (or having recently moved). Though, all things considered, it has an above average dispersion compared to most MGs.

I quite like using the Charlton on single-shots, and just tap out the exact fire-rate I want… it’s a deadly weapon if you use full auto for CQC, but then treat it as a semi-auto rifle the rest of the time. Unless you have a moment to lie down and/or brace - then the recoil becomes manageable enough and you can treat it as a star MG.

At least in the SF-rifle 20-round configuration, dispersion would likely get reduced by a third. I wouldn’t mind a overal lower dispersion across the game, but that’s a topic for another suggestion…

For clarification, in case people are wondering, here are the alternatives for a SF Commonwealth rifle as I know them;

  • Rieder Automatic Rifle

A South African prototype of WW2. Never adopted, never produced for military use, only a couple ever made. Not even a fire selector (full-auto only), so hard to even consider this a “select-fire” rifle in-game. Also heavier than a Charlton, as far as I can tell.

  • Huot Automatic Rifle

A WW1 Canadian prototyped weapon. Never adopted, never produced for military use, only a couple ever made. Also heavier than a Charlton, if both are loaded. And also full-auto only.

I was going to include the Howell, but then I remembered that it was semi-auto only.

Anyway, I don’t see the argument for why the Rieder or the Huot deserve the tech tree SF spot over the Charlton. With that in mind… unless (collective-)you are against the Commonwealth ever getting its own tech tree SF-rifle, I don’t see the argument against it there, either.

I am a big fan on the Charlton. Prob one of my favourite US/Commonwealth guns at BR2 (along with the BSA Thompson)… but I tend to use MG squads for CQC which most people don’t seem to do.

i don’t think it’s a big deal… and i also think nerfing it is extremely unnecessary.

If you don’t think it’s a big deal, then you don’t have to vote…?

Voting “do nothing” is you saying you want things to be this way. It’s not the “I don’t care” option.

It’s such a simple change so perhaps the effort put into it isn’t too much… fair enough.

If i would have put more thought into it i could have realized the following… just seemed like another small and minuscule change like your advocation for the changing of the flag for the uk and italy event… which we’ll never see again… so there might have been a sort of “resentment” brought to my feelings towards this post.

And yes you do have a point though… the bren mag would allow it to have the 20 rd variant.

People like to use production numbers as a reason not to add things and they follow through with that with certain BP and event weapons… i’m just following the crowd.

That wasn’t me, that was someone else. I just poked a little fun at the devs/artist for forgetting Canada (again) after someone else asked for the change (after noting that “they’re unlikely to [change it]”, and adding a little extra historical uniform information).

I was pleasantly surprised when they did change it (I still have the event art saved, because I really liked it), but it would be wrong to say I “advocated” for it.

I would advice against arguing from a position you don’t even agree with… especially since irony doesn’t translate well when written.

Even more so since helpers (supposedly) check replies for feedback, driving for something you don’t even stand by is the opposite of constructive.

Glad I got through to you. Yes, all models (technically) are already in the game, just take the Bren mag and put it on the Charlton… I don’t even think the animation would need touching up, the mag release is the same… assuming no major clipping issues.

Heads up, you’re still voting negative on the first poll, in case you forgot to change it…

The Huot Automatic Rifle would be perfect for the future Canadian squad!

In terms of performance, it would be like the Farquhar-Hill, but with a 25-round magazine.
