I would first like to express my desire for greater Commonwealth content and representation be added and expanded upon in the game, and I naturally support any calls for such things (with caveats, as always)! If my reputation proceeds me (as it has in the past) then I need not elaborate further on the subject!
Now that my inherent good will has been established, allow me some words of advice, caution, and suggested alterations to this otherwise fine topic:
Let me just apologize in advance, this will be a long one, because I am passionate about the topic, please bear with me.
Start
To start off with, a word of caution; It is generally advisable that you stick to one idea per topic/post, otherwise you risk breaking Rule 7 of the “Rules for submitting a suggestion”:
You have here discussed not one, not two, but three squad ideas, all seperate in form and function, only tied together by their Commonwealth nature… That might be breaking the rule… Or it might not, it’s a little vague.
Now of course, sticking to one idea isn’t just advisable rules wise, it’s also overall healthier for each suggestion/topic to be focused.
Royal Engineers Idea
Royal Engineers are a must have, and incidentally the game does have a Legacy Squad of British Engineers hidden away (listed in the Enlisted Resource as “7th Field Company”).
What I would like to see is the return of all such Legacy Squads, for all factions, as they were once freely available to be earned in days past (before the merge).
The problem I can see arising is that Royal Engineers specificly is that didn’t exactly have unique uniforms, and patches/insignias on the uniforms are no longer a thing in game (I have been told they used to be, but were removed). Still, that doesn’t stop us from getting Royal Engineer squads in the game, with their own unique squad name and insignia!
Jungle Carbine Idea
That’s the No. 5 Rifle, often called the “Jungle Carbine”, is a derivative of the No. 4 rifle, which was never refered to by the acronym “SMLE”.
This rifle was actually used and produced in non-insignificant numbers by the British during (and after) the Second World War, and as such I’d rather see it in the tech tree.
However, if you actually meant a “SMLE Jungle Carbine” (or, in WW2 terms, a “No. 1 Jungle Carbine”), but just provided a incorrect example picture, then this is what you were talking about:
This is a Australian made and domestic prototype of the same basic concept, shortening their standard service rifle (which in the case of Australia, New Zeeland and India during the war meant the Rifle No. 1 Mk III, incorrectly labeled in game with it’s WW1 era name as the “SMLE Mk III”) to become more handier and easier to carry, better suited for enviornments like a jungle (hence the name). You can see some of the similarities (a muzzle device to reduce flash, rubber padded buttstock, etc), but also clear diferences (namely the type and configuration of sights), which point them out as being different, and they are, being the same concept just applied to two different rifles in the same family of rifles.
This Australian project never got to the same stage as the UK’s did, and as such only remained as prototypes, and I would be way more happy if this gun became a Premium instead.
Universal Carrier Idea
The Universal Carrier should definetly be added to the tech tree, my preffered implementation though would be as a Rider II Squad, because the UC acting as a clown car is, quite frankly, [expletive]. Of course, other nations should get similar treatment, and even the US getting a MG armed Jeep themselves (because I believe in subfaction/parent-faction parity in squad types).
Yes you make some good points. And thank you ill take one idea per thread into account next time think i got a bit carried away. I do like your raider UC idea. What would you add into the game for a Commonwealth APC if you made the UC raider 2, If you could snap your fingers and make it happen?
For the tech tree, I would be satisfied with a lend-lease M5 Halftrack APC III squad (a update to the APC II trucks) for the Commonwealth, with of course the US receiving a TT M3 equivalent squad. This would be acceptable, because the US preferred to M3 to the M5 in their own forces, and rather sent the latter as lend-lease.
For premium, we have a whole lot of interesting Canadian Kangaroo APCs to choose from, such as a M7 Priest Kangaroo, or Churchill Kangaroo, a Sherman Kangaroo, or Ram Kangaroo.
Priest Kangaroo:
Ram Kangaroo:
Churchill Kangaroo:
These conversions would have been rarer IRL than lend-lease gear, which is why I suggest these to be premiums. Plus, these are (often) MG armed APCs with the hull plating of actual tanks, a bit too good for the tech tree as a standard, perfectly fine as a Premium gimmick.
Of course, for a regular truck “APC”, for a Commonwealth APC II position, I would consider:
Austin K5:
Whilst the Bedford QL was way more common, it’s quite large (would be the largest truck in game if added) and I couldn’t find an image of one being open-toped (including no canvas roof) that wasn’t decidedly post-war. So, Austin K5 it is, second best option.
