For some reason, the hierarchy of commands to AI soldiers makes them destroy friendly fortifications, rather than make use of them.
I’ve especially been noticing this with the influx of new players, having figured out who was breaking my structures down mid-game and asking them afterwards. ALL the reactions are the same set of responses:
“I thought I was ordering my soldiers to refill their ammo.”-- Instead they were breaking down friendly ammo boxes.
“I thought ordering them to a sandbag would make them use it for cover.” – Instead they were breaking down sandbags cover.
“I thought I could order them to use the (H)MG nest, since they can use standard MGs.”-- Instead, they break down the fortification instead.
Make the priority command to “USE” the structure, not “REMOVE” it. In the case of sandbags, priority is to take cover behind it. MG nests should be to “protect it” if not "use it"
If you feel like you need to remove a teammates structures, it should have to be you to do it, not the AI.
Like I said, it should be a really easy fix, that would significantly help out the game.
Special Note: @1942786, you made the mention a while back that it would “hurt (your) feelings if a teammate was fortifying the next objective rather than building ammo boxes on the current one”.
Well it hurts my feelings when I actively try to keep the current objective supplied and protected, but teammates’ AI is breaking down those very fortifications due to people spamming commands or not understanding the actual interaction that their AI has with that structure.
My first guess was, that the game doesn’t distinguish between friendly-built and enemy structures. But no, in the case of ammo boxes it does. And ammo boxes fall victim to this. I really see no reason, why you should be able to order your soldiers to dismantle friendly structures. Enemy structures, sure. It’s convenient to order your squad to take down some barbed wire without endangering yoruself. But in the case of the occasional poorly placed friendly structure, I think it isn’t too much to ask of players to do that themselves
Its not MY AI that is doing it! It’s teammates’ AI!
They never pay attention or notice that their AI is breaking down friendly fortifications.
In the case of the people I talked to, they were switching characters due to running out of ammo, then pointing at a friendly ammo box (mine, not theirs) trying to get the bots to go grab more ammo.
No, I tested it, I could do it up to about 70m away.
So especially in the situation of console players (that’s not a call to hate on console players), the default buttons for reload and squad commands the same, so by accidentally spamming the reload button while looking in the direction of a fortification, the AI take that as an order to break it down.
once i pressed x for my bots to go to one spot. i did that while rally point was in front of me. i didnt aim at rally point (but could have “hit” it cause of stupid invisible hitboxes), but at point behind it and bots dismantled my rally point…
there should be separate button for order to dismantle engineer structure.
this was already mentioned that devs dont want people stashing their bots to a safe place which would happen with longer leash. bots provide feeling of more people on battlefield and that wont happen if you put them all in some safe spot and take them out one by one.
Ive said this time and time again, the devs REALLY need to have a mandatory tutorial for new players that goes into depth of how to use squads. I use to think players were remedial, now i think its they are uninformed. Smh.
“depth” lol you kidding me ?
even doom 1 has more strategic depth this games squad mechanics. let me tell you the basics;
-always keep them at wide formation
-if they follow you, %90 percent of them are probably going to die before reaching the point
if you order them to move forward to enemy, %90 percent will instantly die anyways
-you can park them just behind skirmish zones to use them as “instant spawns”
the end, thats it
I usually keep my squad wide and aggressive. But in all honesty it doesnt matter because the A.I is terrible & unreliable. Sometimes the A.I are stone cold and other times they are stevie wonder. Best advice is park your squad in bushes or near 2nd floor windows, they pop shots and usually get 2-3 bodies before being wiped.
This isnt exactly true, there are many different applications to squad orders and positioning. Best to learn now while they add more options over time.
Nah there 0 abuse usually AI work like this near player construction:
if is stucked it cant move in any direction because of ally construction AI dismantle the construction
if the player oreder to defend a zone and in the zone is present friendly barbared wire (dont build by you) AI dismantle it
if a player aim another player/his construction and press order botton AI dismantle the construction
And you can double check this calling a friend and try it in a private costum match
i think the only problem here present for more than two year is the AI need our imput for dismantle enemy construction but instead it can do it automatically with friendly one
I’ve never once in this game thought that I needed my ai bots to destroy some friendly constructions, but then that’s just me, I like to do things myself
I had a game last night where I just gave up trying to put down ammo boxes and such because I would turn around and an AI would be dismantling it. Sometimes it was random teammates’, but every now and then it would be one of the guys I was grouped up with. They said they absolutely were not doing it intentionally, but it seems like any time you order your AI somewhere near a friendly fortification, it snaps to that construction and the first thing they try to do is break it down.
I disagree with stashing AI in a room and running out one at a time, but I really hope this wasn’t some botched attempt by the devs to keep that from happening. As just trying to get AI to stay in a specific spot and defend the cap while the player runs around with an engineer or protecting a certain entry is resulting in structures being destroyed instead.
