Shovels and trenches can change the tide of a battle

For the newer players and people who do not utilize the shovel, this is for you.

Trenches are a wonderful way to create a “safe” route across open terrain, and can conceal the total number of squads who are rushing towards the objective.

Just played a game in Normandy this evening (invasion mode: Ver-sur-Mer South), and the allied team captured the first 3 flags in less than 10 minutes. On the 4th flag, the allies had 800 tickets remaining, and we managed to hold them off the entire time.

How did we do it? A lot of teamwork, and a very nicely dug trench that I spent the time digging for the benefit of the entire team.

Part 1:

Part 2:

The same story in Moscow, where at the first objective, the safest way across the open terrain is by digging a trench to help protect your teammates (increase their odds of survivability while crossing no-man’s land)

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3:

And sometimes there’s a TANK that is in a tough position to get to, without being spotted by the vehicle operator and/or infantry. The solution, is sometimes spending a little bit of time digging (in order to get closer, or in a better position to run for it.

Part 1

Now with the tank out of the way, I can use my MG for what it’s designed.
Part 2:

Lastly: If you ever hear a nearby teammate who is using a mortar… It never hurts to help a brother out, and build him three ammo boxes, before you go and get yourself shot.

It’s all about the teamwork, to make the dream work.

Shovels are really underrated. In some campaigns I would say they are even required. I feel like they dig a small amount and it can take a while, but when paired with melee attack speed, it becomes bearable

The time required isn’t so much of a big deal, when the team is doing a good job defending the objective. The frustrating part is spending time to dig a safe line for the team… only to lose the objective within a minute or two.

(but if you can get the trench made, then it becomes much easier to defend/attack, while significantly increasing the player-survivability)

That was quite a footage, i salute you for that great teamwork!

I do think they take too much time to dig a proper hole or trench on such fast paced game. I only dig when I m bored and even then feels half baked

I would rather see a template with trenches or holes like eng when they build something and dig to build it.

Waste of time, only useful for less skilled players.

they’re useful in LF only, i love digging my way towards objective and seeing everyone else using it too.

in squads my AI team would just go straight in the open and die as usual, we need buildable trench blueprints just like hammer ones

It would be good if there was an adjustable option on how deep each digging animation would be so I can build proper trench footings for my AI to shoot from.

I disagree. It is best for open defenses. You create some trench holes in the back of the point and place your soldiers in them. They now contest the point while being resistant to mortars, artillery, etc and having a smaller body profile, all while you run around the point and defend

The best defense is to kill attackers fast enough, that’s it. If you need your own trench because you are not skilled enough to use normal environment to survive, it’s up to you. But for skilled players, digging trenches is waste of time. And during this time, your team is without your body, without your gun. That’s it.

Premade trench blueprints + ablitiy to order bots to dig them = truly making shovels worhwhile

Usually yes.
But how come the OP has footage of trenches managing to turn the tides though?

O only use them in normady
Other campaign soil is not malleable as normandy
They need to apply normandy soil to every campaign

Whatever darkflow think we are not playing trench simulator 2023

You can do both during the battle.

There are times during defense when there are lulls and breaks between waves. Getting trenches in suitable locations and pairing them with defensive reinforcements from engineers can create a front line that forces the attackers to commit hard in order to contest the point and it can be done in less than 30 seconds.

And from there, you can hide in the trench firing from behind the barricades, and continue to reinforce throughout the game. All while it gives cover to those spawning behind the line.

That’s pretty much very situational. Way too much effort for really small reward. If you can do this, attackers are too weak to be even threat to normal defenders without your trenches lol. With skilled attackers, you wouldn’t be able to do shtt like this and be unpunished.

Yes they can. If you can guess where the fallback point is going to be (possible by seeing which direction the red arrow is pointing on the map and comparing that to where the possible fallback positions are) then you can dig around point to add tank traps, or a crescent shaped ‘moat’ filled with barbed wire - this makes it less intrusive to your allies while simultaneously giving a hard to clear obstacle for the enemy.

When I do this, I’ll send my squad to defend point while staying back to take care of the set up

Ah yes, so can you explain WHY soldiers constructed trenches in REAL LIFE?

Why would they waste the time, when everybody could simply run across open terrain, shooting at each other?

Maybe they should just rid of everything in this game, except for rifles, smgs, and machine guns… and just make the game a battle-royale (because everybody complains about the different strategies that can be implemented)

-you got people bitching about snipers
-you got people bitching about tanks.
-then you got people bitching about planes,
-and mortars…
-And now I’m hearing about trenches being useless, for the reason

Fucking hilarious! just go run across no-man’s land, and if you die… it’s because you’re a “less skilled player”. LMFAO!!!

that expression

It’s more of a positional case, not so much a situational one. I do it just about every game if I’m in the position for it and I get top kills and top engineering points because of it.

Also, it’s not like I don’t expect to get punished in a real game. At the end of the day, the engineers are there to do one job, and that’s to create fortifications for the team. I expect some if not all to die but if my team or myself can take advantage of the cover after the fact, then what is the issue? It is like saying that using medkits or ammo boxes aren’t worth it because you aren’t just rushing in.

There is more than one way to win matches.

if you equip you soldiers with the melee perk, they dig much faster and it’s not nearly as difficult to do in

I think they made some adjustments to the soil for these campaigns, because I used to never waste my time trying. But now trenches and holes, seems to be dug more effeciently. The key is to dig straight down, and go as deep as you can, and then work your way out.
Or find a bomb crater, and start digging at it’s deepest point, and this will allow you to dig trenches faster in Moscow, Berlin, and Tunisia.
