Rework the downed state

Personally I don’t like how the downed state works right now. It’s very battleroyale-esk and imo doesn’t suit the ww2 theme of the game at all. So I suggest to rework it to be something of a last stand fantasy.

  1. Change the name from downed to critically wounded. Makes more sense imo.

  2. Rework the animation, or rather delete it and make a completely new one. Currently it feels like soldier simpy walks on his fours. You can’t feel he is struggling on anything like that.

New animation should show that the soldier is in a near death state, that he uses his last breath to crawl to cover. Something like lying on the ground, holding the wound (already present), shouting for help and crawling (ideally with a trail of blod) instead of walkig on fours.

  3. Additionally to point 2, I’d also make soldier move slower. Or at least make perks not apply when critically wounded. Now it simply looks silly when wounded soldiers zoom around.

  4. Allow to use personal weapons (pistols) but with a few caviats:

    • you can’t shoot and move, only shoot or only move, with some delay to transition between the two
    • recoil is doubbled
    • make using weapon consume stamina, like it was tested in the stalingrad beta (but maybe remove all perk moddifiers)

Yes, it’s heavily nerfed. But it’s supposed to be a last stand scenario where you try to take one or two of those bastards with you, not rambo around whiping the whole squad.

  5. Continuation of point 4: add a perk that allows use of main weapons. But on top of everyting in point 4, you can’t ADS and the gun has a fixed minimum dispersion, I guess on the SMG level (no sniping when downed, sorry).

  6. Make all soldiers go to the critical state, even if they don’t have medical kit. Simply makes sense (and it’s a soft buff to medics).
Also allow player to give up by holding a button (like jump). Then every soldier in his squad will die. This way player can simply skip the critical state without potentially suiciding all his soldiers one by one.

  7. Controversial one: nerf the healing speed perk.
This whole mechanic doesn’t make any sense if a critically wounded soldier can heal himself in 0.5s and be ready to fight again.

I would much prefer for them to just get rid of the vitality perk and leave downed state as is.

Yes for removing vitality. Or at least giving perks downsides (no, having to chose is not a downside).

But no for keeping the downed state. It simply looks stupid and doesn’t fit the game in it’s current form.

I’m pretty sure you said downed-state feels too hero-shooter. To me, a last stand mechanic feels even more so like a hero thing/COD.

From what I’m getting, it would make more sense to keep a down-state but you can only be healed by a medic for x amount of time.

Fair. But what I proposed at least fits ww2 setting more. Or at least “ww2 fantasy” ppl have in their heads.

You will just get shot like now.
And I’d rather increase survivability than make it harder to heal. Anyway, it’s not a post about healing.

Oh, i thought that was the whole point you were making with the whole get rid of down state, last stand, let medics revive the dead, etc.

Kind of.
In my scenario downed/ceitical state should be like a last chance to not get killed and potentially heal to continue the fight.
And if you get “killed” you can be back in fight if medic revives you.

So overall, greater survivability of infantry while still keeping the fast ttk and total number of kills.

  1. Turn the perk that increases your down time to the old perk which increases the chance of getting downed instead of getting killed.

Edit: Already ingame. My bad.

I thought it was both?

Why not both?

Not that I was aware of.

Because what is the point of being down for a longer time? 8 seconds is long enough to heal if you didnt get killed anyways.

Maybe I’m imagining things but i could of sworn it read that it did both

You are right.

I honestly didnt notice because they didnt bother to include numbers to the mentioned chance.

I asked euthy about this one day. Try searching it, maybe you will get lucky.

I got ya, i can see some pretty trolly stuff happening with this though.

Depends on how it’s done.
You can always nerf it to the ground like all other things that got abused.

But the most basic nerfs I can think of are:

  • limited charges of the revive tool
  • each soldier can be revived only X times
  • headshots and explosions make it impossible to revive

And there are probably 10 more

Well Cuisine Royal is our parent game and we are the unplanned kid who kind of turned out ok

It’s most likely the same reason why the 1st person view is janky and weird – the game was built on a 3rd person view basis and then the camera angle was added somewhere around your shoulders

And the reason why we have gear slots and drag and drop mechanics and equipment weight numbers – all rudiments of a Battle Royale DNA

Wdym? Germany obviously lost the war because they didn’t invest perk points into vitality. /s
