Yeah, I’m wrong. Fair play. All the sources I can find agree with you, and it looks like I was looking at the wrong damn gun on the sherman site.
Too late.
I’d guesstimate that thousands of players have infantry loadouts that heavily feature FG42s.
They drop quite often with bronze random weapon delivery. That’s soon to change I’d guess, so I’d stock up since FG42 can be transferred between campaigns. Not sure about the FG42 II since it’s a sniper rifle in one campaign and a rifle in another.
i know that most of my loadouts have a large amount of FG42
Honestly I only use FG42s because they make people cry on the forums. I don’t really consider it the WUNDERWAFFE that most people here do.
Personally I’m finding the weapons used by the Allies in the Normandy campaign to be very good. I’m attempting to set up the squads historically and I am really enjoying my efforts thus far. Things can only improve when I start to fill the squads and upgrade my soldiers and their weapons
what are this and
?
also: calling 75 mm guns anti infant is both wrong and disturbing. for one thing a single mm does not equal the difference between a .50 cal mg round and a single birdshot bb (used as examples, not saying its actually the same difference.
do you mean lend-lease?
*sherman
??? ??? ??? ???
discrepancies
(btw sry bout picking apart ur word usage. most of these seem like results of a bad translation, but the anti infant thing im not sorry bout)
i use it and it’s incredible good, not game winning good since your team mates are actively trying to sabotage, but still good non the less
He’s being entertaining. My guess is that he’s a native English speaker.
This highlights the issue of funnel maps and lack of space to move around.
Sure the M5 wouldnt stand a chance against panther anyway but having space to move around would definitely help to avoid contact with bigger cats.
Speed would give better survivability against inf for light tanks and would give them purpose as support vehicle rather than current cannon fodder.
This obv would require some adjusting in tanks & how the squads works. In current terms as tanks are locked to certain squad the light tanks buff would benefit premium players who could bring 2 tanks and use the one more suited for job. Light tank for support against inf & bigger tank against enemy tanks & supporting role sacrifising speed for armor & gun benefits.
Or give tanker squads ability to select which ever tank they have unlocked to play with ingame.
This way f2p players could choose the tank best suited for the job.
Ofc currently theres barely any reason to select anything else than best tank of given faction.
I picked up the MP43 off a dead soldier today and I have to be honest, it felt like cheating, it is insane. The M2 carbine is basically another smg as the recoil on it is horrible and the sights are pretty useless. The FG42 needs to be classified as a lmg and locked to machine gunners.
I know that this game will never be 100% realistic, but there’s a difference with a prototype weapon like the Gewehr 41(M), MP40/I and almost every gold order, and even the PPK-42 (of which two prototypes ever existed, yet we have a squad equipped with four of them) or weapons that were produced in very little numbers like the AVS-36 (I assume you wrote that in cyrillic), and weapons that were available to the army, but were specifically rejected by it, like the FG42.
Yes, if you want to be that nitpicky, yes, I meant to say this: it wasn’t used by the Deutsches Heer, but rather by the Luftwaffe (Fallschirmjäger).
But why should it ever be given to the gunners if it’s not a machine gun, nor is it a semi auto rifle (obviously). It’s a universal weapon meant to perform both the role of a light machine gun in full auto and the role of a standard infantry rifle in semi auto. So in my opinion the best option would be to make a premium Fallschirmjäger squad using the FG42 (and maybe the second one with the FG42II), especially that it was produced in rather low numbers.
As above, the FG42 is not a light machine gun, so it shouldn’t be given to gunners
Neither is BAR, the name tells you exactly what it is, but that’s a gunner weapon
Yes, kinda. But BAR (and Chauchat for that matter, they both were designed for the “walking fire” concept) wasn’t meant to replace the standard issue infantry rifle as was the FG42. So the BAR (and, again, the Chauchat) were issued to designated soldiers. The FG42 however was meant to be issued to every soldier. Also, here’s probably the best source I could find quickly about what the BAR and Chauchat are: https://youtu.be/z8aAXsJRzTM
Yes but actually no, it was meant to equip everything paratrooper, not every Wehrmacht soldier which we only have 1 Fallschirmjäger division in the TT of Normandy that would be up to the 43 and the stg to do
Yes and that’s exactly what I was trying to say: it was meant to equip every soldier in the branch that it was issued for (in this case, the Fallschirmjäger). It wasn’t meant to be issued to Heer (land forces) at all, they in fact specifically rejected it in favor of the StG44.
You have my agreement here, but I’d like to point out that the FG42 was also incredibly limited in it’s production, as only about 7000 were made, pretty small scale on any front. I’d also add that we have the MKb42h in Moscow, and by the best info I can find, maybe 35 prototypes were dropped into the Kholm Pocket. Not arguing, just chiming in.
Was just being cheeky, I knew what you meant XD
I was presenting the best option as I see it within the current confines of the game. If/When we get Fallschirmjagers and Paratroopers, I think the weapons they were issued that others weren’t should be for them alone, but until then you’re right, the FG42 was designed to be an all-purpose weapon that could replace the MG34 in Fallschirmjager service. Since it was designed to be a lighter, more versatile replacement for the LMG, I reccomend giving it to gunners, limiting the number you can have in any given squad and solving the perceived problem with stacking them up to 9 deep in an infantry squad.
As I said, FG42 wasn’t designed to replace the infantry rifle, it was designed to replace the MG34, and issued as such. One FG42 per ten man section, along side one SMG man and 8 riflemen.
according the best info I’ve found so far, I’ll gladly be wrong if someone has better.
Could you link your sources please? I’ve never heard of the FG42 solely in the LMG role. As far as I know, it was meant to become a universal weapon for the paratroopers. Here, in the beginning of the article on the Forgotten Weapons website, Ian (or whoever wrote that article) says it: https://www.forgottenweapons.com/german-ww2-rifles/german-fg-42/
And even Wikipedia says it here: FG 42 - Wikipedia
And I know that Wikipedia isn’t a great source, but there are “references” and “external links” tabs at the bottom of the article (one of them being the Forgotten Weapons article I linked here)
TBH, I thought I was referencing the wiki article on it replacing the MG34, but it looks like I’m remembering something else. If I find that source, I’ll update you, but for now it looks like I was wrong there.
As far as how it was used vs it’s intended role, I’m much more comfortable with it’s actual use being represented in game. Intentions are great, but there were never enough FG42s to arm most falllschirmjager, even according to the wiki.
It’s not a great source, and has zero cited sources, but this was what I was referencing for section organization and armament:
German Organisation (st-and.ac.uk)
I haven’t been able to find anything else that gets down to the section level for paratroops, and would honestly love to see better info if it can be found.
All that said, I see only one real problem with the FG42 variants in game, and that’s the variety of troops that get access to them. It’s possible to stack entire squads with FG42s, or to stuff one on any soldier not carrying an MG or SMG. I think moving them to gunners would better reflect both the gun’s intended role (a lighter, more mobile weapon capable of LMG work when required, making the gunner classes more versatile) and it’s actual availability. If we get FJ units, my opinion will shift to making the gun only available to them, regardless of how many can be put in that one squad.
