Good weapons for USA to balance Normandy campaign

But I just thought about a possible solution. In the great game of Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad, specifically in the Rising Storm standalone DLC, there are two separate gunner classes for the US faction: Machine Gunner with the M1919A6 (another must-have in Enlisted) and a separate gunner class with a BAR (I forgot the specific name).

And I think that splitting Gunner class into two and also splitting Gunner’s weapons between them (and altering some stats for LMGs as some of them were designed for shoulder fire) would be a very good and non-invasive solution. The FG42 would fit into the LMG category and, even better for history nerds like me, since in Normandy and Berlin it would be the only “LMG” for Germany, Darkflow could make it so all FG42 squads are Fallschirmjäger units and have appropriate uniforms, so it would be somewhat historically accurate.

I’m honestly not sure how I feel about this. Doctrine was different for each side of the war, very different. MG34/42 were designed to be used differently than the BAR or FG42, for sure, closer to the role of the m1919a6, or what we now consider the General Purpose Machine Gun. Of the guns in the game, the BAR is meant to be fired from the shoulder, but it wouldn’t have been done in Auto much, and no one would’ve expected it to be effective at any kind of range, and the FG42 is almost magically good at doing so, but again this effectiveness is reduced by range.

If they add the 1919A6 (which they should) I think we wouldn’t need to split the classes. Gunners would have the choice between a lighter, more mobile, more accurate (unsupported) weapon or weapons, and a heavier, less accurate (unsopported), less mobile weapon or weapons to suit playstyle or needs of combat.

I know that doctrines were very different, but I think that making separate “Automatic Rifleman” or “Light Machine Gunner” squads dressed up in paratrooper uniforms would be better than what we have now.

Although I think I have a better solution. In another, not so great game, Heroes and Generals, one of the soldier class is Paratrooper. They have access to couple of unique things. First of all, they spawn in a paratroop transport aircraft above the map and can jump above any capture point they want, although I feel like that would go very bad with the Enlisted squad mechanics.
But most importantly, they have access to a couple of unique weapons that infantry doesn’t. Soviet paratroopers don’t have any, German paratroopers obviously have the FG42 and the American paratroopers have the M1A1 Carbine (It’s smaller, there’s an equipment slot mechanics), and a Johnson M1941 LMG.

So here’s another, harder to implement and more “invasive” yet probably better idea. Make the separate paratrooper squad which would have the same size as a sniper squad (so 3 to 5 people, but let’s say engineer/radioman, assaulter/bomber and gunner/sniper upgrades) but replace the sniper with the paratrooper.

  • The squad would start with three paratroopers, counterparts of troopers in this squad, one equipped with the FG42 in case of Germans and Johnson M1941 LMG for US, and the rest with standard bolt action rifles.
  • Paratrooper specific weapons however would be squad locked, not class locked.
So all “default weapon” classes possible in a paratrooper squad: engineer, radioman and bomber would be able to use them as well, but only in this squad (kinda like all soldiers in premium motorcycle squads can use SMGs).
  • Assaulters would use SMGs without the MP43 for Germans, it’s not an SMG and it was rejected by the Luftwaffe.
  • Gunners would use machine guns with only M1919A6 for the US (which we, once again, need).
  • And now snipers. Everything normal for US snipers, but German snipers in paratrooper squad would be able to use the FG42/II rifle (maybe without a possibility to remove the scope for balance). So the FG42/II would be both squad and class locked.

So a fully upgraded paratrooper team would look like this (at least if I’d be using it):
Germany:

  • Paratrooper - FG42,
  • Paratrooper - FG42,
  • Bomber - FG42,
  • Engineer - FG42,
  • Sniper - FG42/II,

The US:

  • Paratrooper - M1941 LMG,
  • Paratrooper - M1941 LMG,
  • Bomber - M1941 LMG,
  • Engineer - M1941 LMG,
  • Gunner - M1919A6,

And like this with all upgrades being different:
Germany:

  • Paratrooper - FG42,
  • Paratrooper - FG42,
  • Assaulter - Beretta M38,
  • Gunner - MG42,
  • Radioman - FG42,

And the US:

  • Paratrooper - M1941 LMG,
  • Paratrooper - M1941 LMG,
  • Assaulter - M1 Thompson,
  • Sniper - Sniper M1 Garand,
  • Radioman - M1941 LMG,

Although to be honest I’m not sure about specifics of this idea - things like the amount of soldiers and squad upgrades, but I feel like this is a slightly better idea than making a separate LMG Gunner squad and way better than giving the FG42 to gunners.

Screw u man oooooh I want balance wah wah how bout we keep this game from turning into another turd game like the rest u want fairness u should play the battlefield series this and I repeat this won’t turn out like u want it should stay with the real world what they had what they used etc. I’ll be D*** if I’ll let y’all bunch of pansy’s ruin this game

Now was the panther on Normandy front in real life go by that not what a bunch of fat nerds want

Hey retard you know this is a video game and not real life? Oh no? how the fuck did you even get on a computer, oh well to put simply video games that focus against other players should be balanced in someway unlike real life were Germany was at a heavy resource and manpower disadvantage

At the time of the invasion of Normandy in June 1944, there were initially only two Panther-equipped Panzer regiments in the Western Front, with a total of 156 Panthers between them. From June through August 1944, an additional seven Panther regiments were sent into France, reaching a maximum strength of 432 in a status report dated 30 July 1944.[113]

They were in normandy, and if they’re going to be in normandy there’s no practical way for the devs to disallow them from the beaches. By comparison, there were only ever 478 Sd.Kfz. 234 built, and only 101 of the /2 variant with the 5cm gun. History is a good place to start for deciding what gets added, but if the game is going to stay fun and balanced, some stuff is going to have to be adjusted, or not added at all.

What’s that stand for

And besides calling everyone names and telling everyone to play Battlefield series, do you have anything constructive to say?

sry its HLL (H*ll Let Loose)

I like the idea of a paratrooper class in a paratrooper squad. I don’t think that us army paratroopers used the Johnson lmg at all in western Europe. The only use was by the marine paratroopers in the pacific and the FSSF, which to the best of my knowledge was not involved in the normandy campaign.

If your argument is that there are too many fg42s in the game, I don’t think the answer is to add a weapon more rare as a counter. Maybe they can get those folding stock carbines instead

better yet limit fg 42 to gunners or something like that

the johnson lmg was used for special ops in europe with the most notable users being the devil’s brigade, so there at least a reason to add the johnson lmg

Paratroopers didn’t, spec ops did.

In point of fact, there were more Johnson LMGs made than FG42s, just fewer made it to Europe.

Not super unusual considering Germany threw everything resembling a weapon onto the frontline.
A lot of this “Germany did it first” shit just comes from Germany being desperate and more willing to use unproven weapons

Darkflow should fix existing Carbines before adding any new ones. And besides that, the M1A1 would make a terrible counterpart to the FG42.

My problem with the FG42 is that first - it’s unbalanced, and second - giving it to all units is not historical. And it’s not like for example the Armaguerra Mod. 39 which is an experimental rifle and just wasn’t adopted at the time. German land forces specifically rejected the FG42 and favored what would become the StG44.

As for the Johnson LMG being used in Europe, well, neither was the M50 Reising which is in a Normandy premium squad. So that’s clearly not a problem for Darkflow.
