why not? sure you wouldnt be able to control throttle, since you have to hold binoculars with one hand, but at least you’d see something, right? and when you are done you just secure them somewhere, maybe in a pocket or something and go back to piloting
I m not sure if I even want to answer that…
oh, some planes even had in-built secondary gunsight, which was similar to sniper rifle optics
This statement shows to me you have never touched a single plane in your life, so let me break things down for you. Firstly, unless you are adjusting something related to the plane itself like opening the flaps, adjusting the engine mixture or yes, changing the throttle, you keep both hands on the stick similar to driving a car, especially if you are going to be shot at. Secondly, if you are flying at low altitudes ( lets say less than 10000 ft), you need to keep your eyes forward facing as much as possible to watch for birds, clouds, weather, the ground and in our case, flack and enemy aircraft. You do not want to spend a extended period of time looking out the side of your airplane because that is a good way to hit a bird, run into the ground or fly right into a swarm of enemy aircraft. Quick glances around is ok and encouraged, again like driving a car, but you want to make them quick and snappy. You are also subject to turbulence which will be exacerbated over a battlefield with the amount of planes in the air and stuff occurring on the ground, which may knock your aircraft off course and to correct for it, you need to do both of the things I already mentioned, which means you cannot use binoculars. There is a reason scout planes in WW1 always had two people in them, and the person in the front was always exclusively a pilot.
Yes, some single seat monoplanes had scopes, but they were fixed forward zeroed to work with the guns on the sights, and were never supposed used for any sort of CAS. They were only for shooting at other planes, even the ones on dive bombers like the SBD-3.
i do agree, but in this game you dont have birds, you dont have turbulence and skies are mostly empty or you scan for threats before going for a ground attack run
but they still could be used for cas, imagine how op would an IL-2 with such thing be
Yes, but we don’t have transmission issues on the Panther, so some factors are removed for gameplay balance or fun, while other have to remain to preserve historical accuracy.
No they could not. The SBD pilots were explicitly told never to use the telescopic sight for bombing because it would severely increase the risk of crashing straight into the ocean. You need to be able to use your peripheral vision when you are going into a dive.
oh well, i see you know better, still, what do you do when you bombed enemy troops and are going for a second run, while having no idea where enemy would be?
Ask your team, target a known choke point or an open top point, patrol for other aircraft.
team tends to be useless
Then do the latter two.
i can do the latter two, but remember that the post was about how unrealistic it is that you just “know” where enemies will be, thats the point of existance of this forum thread
Yes, but being able to see individual infantry at 1000ft moving at 80 knots is even less realistic. Also, keep in mind that your pilot is technically a different person than the troopers you spawn on the ground, so if it eases your mind a bit, just imagine your troopers shouted into the radio where the enemy was before they died, and that is how your pilot knows roughly where they are.
A bit further out to where the pop-in isn’t visible, at my resolution at least it’s very obvious that infantry magically don’t render until a certain distance.
you got me wrong, i didnt say that seeing infantry from larger distances is ONLY solution, it was one of the possible solutions, peharps we get some other way of having an idea where enemy is;
you mentiod radios, peharps if there is a larger concentration of enemy infantry or a tank that scored many kills already, bots start putting spotting marks, if they can or something like that…
well you can always make educated guess. you can see your infatry and you see positions that enemy is actually not on. so you can estimate where enemy can be based on cap point. if your team is nowhere near cap, then it is likely that there is enemy between your team and cap point. if your team is close to cap point, then it is likely that enemy is on cap point and behind. if you are not new to map/campaign you can always guess where rally point will be and avenues of approach towards cap, so you bomb them.
yeah, or my team is just 90% filled with campers who are waiting for enemies to cease coming
btw, is it just me or is using aircraft actually far less efficient than just using infantry? it feels like im not contributing to my team at all in it, even when i bomb stuff
