Add to mortar squad: observer fire / forward observer feature

This would be an alternative way to fire mortars.

  1. Take any soldier with binoculars.
  2. Order your mortarman (individually or the whole squad) to stay in place.
  3. When looking through your binoculars, press LMB to order your AI to fire their mortar(s) (Range limit may be needed?)
3.1 Holding LMB may increase the accuracy (progress bar needed).
  4. If mortars aren’t obstructed (by a roof for example), they will shoot at the designated location.
4.1 AI may have artificial ROF limit to avoid spam (a circle like in tanks when reloading).
  5. Maybe increase the sound and visuals of the mortars so the enemy can notice them shooting (possibly at him) and take appropriate action.

In comparison to current way of shooting mortars:

  • much less safe (you need direct line of sigh to use this so you can get shot)
  • more precise as you can spot targets in real time
  • faster than placing a marker
  • Cool :sunglasses:

Been dreaming about this for some time now.
“Got two mortars. Would be nice if they’d fire togheter at the same time.”

With mortars splash damage being nerfed a lot compared to before, it would compensate nicely (at the obvious cost of going through shell reserves twice as fast)

Mortars squads would become more viable as assault (support) squads as well.

Yes I’d like a lot.

for one soldier on your team at extreme range so no…no…god no… unless you nerf the size of the mortar team

So it’s better hide the whole squad and make it invulnerable while they shell the objective?

This mechanic would give players a more precise way of aiming at the cost of their safety and potentially rof. A fair deal imo.

if the second option is turning a blind fire weapon into a sniper precision weapon…otherwise it is shell shell shell…dead…new spotter shell shell shell

mortars and artillery in general is an indirect fire weapon that targets area for effect it does not target people or groups

Why not?

Mortars are not very useful atm.

VoyoMayPL suggestion wouldn’t really make them that stronger. It would merely add another, more active way to use them.

It would revivify the specialist class that is underused.

Also, especially, it would work wonders to target tanks out of bounds!!!

Oh, also, it would make binoculars more relevant.

bull it would make them far stronger you would have a bazooka that does area of effect that would be super strong

ok how about that but they can noty … not reload i don’t want a single spotter with binoc in a building spotting for the entire team for one mortar squad

Just explain to me the difference between VoyoMayPL suggestion, and right now with the entire squad hidden waiting for his squad mate to spot?

Ever seen mortar doom stacks? They’re rare but a thing.

VoyoMayPL suggestion would make it viable for ppl outside stacks.

Great to take out:

  • mg nests.
  • rally points.
  • tanks (with 80mm)

But nobody use em atm outside stacks because teammates are meh!

Also, mortars that would use binocs, would only be more dangerous… against campers.

Are you a camper, bud? :stuck_out_tongue:

What for ??? Besides mortarman there are 9 more players to mark tanks and enemies.

Especially people who play snipers should give marks.

Because it’s easier, more fun, more engaging, more useful, doesn’t rely on your possibly stupid team.

Because

And we all know wannabes snipers in game, never do a thing, or rarely.

I expect the only difference will be that mortars will more often shoot at the enemy instead of blind firing at the objective. And imo it’s a plus.

you mean as opposed to having 80 percent of the squad fully hidden with one member crouching behind a rock

you are talking about a small increase in risk for a quantum leap in accuracy, besides how does the spotter communicate with the squad by hand signals, pigeons, smoke flares, interoperative dance

i could see it if the spotter marked them with a flare that is a risk reward

Then maybe it will make snipers actually useful. You know, because they are meant to deal with high value targets.

again against a target that only has to expose there head, hell no
that would be like snipe with gun with sniper with bazooka

Except the rocket from this bazooka takes approx 10s to reach the target and can be heard from almost the whole map. We may even add “tracers” so ppl can dodge them.
And once you know the general direction where is the mortar, spotter is nearby.

Play and counterplay. More interesting than just blindly YEETing HE at the objective.

Same way ALL other squads do when they hide their bots behind cover? What’s the issue here.

If anything, it would make mortar squads more active and CLOSER to the fight, less often in grey zone.

Cause there is a limit to how far you can get from your squad.

Unless.

You like grey zone mortars?

better than sniper mortars and no i am not a camper if anything i am Rambo going in elbow deem blasting and shooting, but a lot of points you have to defend are open its bad enough with rockets and artillery you get them to take out rockets and make it a special squad they can only rotate through let us say twice the cool down of a normal squad and you might have something

Dude, this mechanic will probably cause mortars to shoot at other things than the objective.
Now ppl mostly shoot at the objective and tanks because they have reliable markers (aka they are easy to shoot at). With this mechanic, they will have many other possible targets.

(Of course there is a possibility that easier to use mortars will cause more ppl to use them and this will result in more ppl with mortars in match that can potentially shell the objective. But mechanic itself actually discourages to fire at the objective due to rof limit.)

Ah that explains it.

  • you’re against any specialist class that aren’t cod grunts with automatics?

Anyway.

Great suggestion @VoyoMayPL . Hopefully devs will implement it to revitalize that underutilized and not very useful class.
