The origins of Z381 semi-automatic rifles begin with the 731 designed by Josef Koucký none have survived. Research continued with the ZK 735 which only one example is known to have been made. No weapon of the series is known to have reached serial production. The series did not conclude with the Z381 in 1938 but went on much longer including the 420.

A Soviet delegation visited the arms factory they were particularly impressed by Koucký’s ZK 381 semi-automatic rifle. Expressing an interest in having it redesigned for the Soviet 7.62×54mm R (7.62mm Mosin) cartridge. The Soviet supplied the factory with 30,000 rounds for internal testing. The factory produced two prototypes, with a fixed 5-round magazine and a standard detachable 10-round magazine. Ultimately domestic Russian designs were chosen instead, and tests in German, France, Spain, and Italy also led to naught.

An interesting design that shows the design process and the independence of the Czech arms industry before its incorporation into the Axis war machine. The little talked about incorporation of various models 5 and ten round as well as various caliber for foreign export is far less talked about then it should be.
