Among Allied tanks at BR2, apart from the M3 Lee Grant, the Chaffee is the only tank armed with a 75mm main gun. However, the Chaffee is currently a premium tank for sale and ought to be added to the regular tech tree.
Another annoying mechanic is that once the tank crew abandons the vehicle, the only reliable way to destroy it is to detonate its ammo rack. Other players can easily snatch the kill points, which brings terrible gaming experience.
Are we really counting on this vehicle? It features an open-top turret with a practically useless turret ring. When compared with the other two tanks, it gets completely outmatched in maneuverability.
Within BR2, this tank occupies a similar positioning between the Sherman and the M10 tank destroyer. Essentially, it is an M10 tailored for BR2. Admittedly it boasts decent penetration, yet two obvious drawbacks cannot be overlooked. But think about it: just like how rarely you see the M10 spawn at BR3, this vehicle also suffers from low pick rate due to its poor terrain adaptability
I get that, but HEAT is by far the most convenient ammo right now. You don’t need to switch shells; it works against both infantry and enemy armored vehicles.
Besides, what tanks at BR2 can withstand 80 mm penetration HEAT rounds?
On the other hand, being limited only to solid AP shells is extremely frustrating.
It’s such an unfair disadvantage, isn’t it?
i love trying to play the chaffee in br3 and facing a br4 tank. so far i managed to kill 1 br4 tank by bum rushing in and flanking it while it reloads ( manged it once every other game i just get blown up for driving on soft dirt instead of the road). For some reason when i get shot at with a direct hit the shells always ghost through or its becuase i have no armor and it rips right through killing 1 person
Maybe add it for M3 Lee since its 75mm is not on the turret.
Adding it to Chaffee will allow a br2 non open top turreted tank to have the ability to pen most frontal armor of the tank it will met while having decent post pen damage.
It’s like downtiering panzer 4 f2 or chi nu 2 to br2.
Only if they take the M24 and move it into BR3 to replace the 105 Sherman. Then they can shift the 105 into BR4 alongside the KV-2 and Su-122 which is where all the closed-top HE slingers should have been contained to begin with so that they no longer ruin BR2 gameplay.
Why would they move the M24 to BR3? If the M24 was bad enough compared to the Sherman to warrant getting moved to BR2 when they both had AP, then how is it any different when they both have APCBC?
Giving the M24 the ability to knock out the Pz IV frontally with a single M61 shot lets it keep doing what it does best but now in BR3 - as a light tank. It performs this way in WarThunder at BR4 against essentially the same tanks, and it’s even positioned higher in the tech tree at rank 3 compared to the rank 2 Pz IV’s… So if it does get M61 then it must go up for balance purposes.
Yea ok - and Enlisted gives it the M72 AP, so it lands in BR2. If it had the M62 like it does in WT, then it should be moved up accordingly because the M62 is just way too lethal against German tanks to justify keeping the M24 in a lower BR.
And honestly, it doesn’t add up to leave it in BR2 once it can reliably frontally deal with basically every Pz IV that’s sitting at higher BRs. If we’re being consistent, should we move all Pz IV down to BR2 too? I’d personally rather not.
It’s not like they would become overpowered. Even if the Chaffee and M3 Lee receive better shells, they still have extremely thin armor. Hits from Axis tanks will still frequently immobilize or destroy them.
To this day, British vehicles in War Thunder have access to M61 rounds, yet American tanks still can’t get M61. It’s simply ridiculous.
The M72 already front pens all tanks it faces, the M61 just makes post pen damage more consistent and removes the frustration of using solid shot. Also what are you talking about moving the Panzer IVs down to BR2?
Tank duels are decided a vast majority of the time by whoever sees the enemy first and fires first, it’s the same with AP and it’s the same with APCBC. It’s not making the Chaffee broken, it’s just making it so you don’t have to keep shooting a tank with 5 extra shells because the post pen damage on your solid shot can’t detonate the ammo.
I think it would be fair to get both M24 and M8A1’s solid AP shells replaced by M61 with HE filler in.
Reason for that is because both tank reloads much slower than the usual tanks with 75mm gun(For comparison, Sherman with 75mm gun reloads in 5.0 seconds)as you can see here :
