[Valkay's] Submachine guns of the Spanish civil war I: The Star SI 35 and the Star TN 35 “Atlantic” in 38.super

Star SI 35

STAR SI

Hello bajtársak and fellow forumdwellers,
The Star SI 35 is a Spanish submachine gun design of Star Bonifacio Echeverria that was produced at Eibar.
At the outbreak of the conflict, Star was producing guns for the Republican side which did not last long as the Nationalists captured Eibar and its heavy industry intact early on in the war. From then on Star produced weapons for the Nationalists, with some thousands of Star SI 35 submachine guns produced.

The Star SI 35 was a very advanced design for its time, featuring a fire selector for semi-auto or full-auto firing and a fire rate selector between 300 rpm or 700 rpm fire rate.
Another unusual feature of the Star SI was the bolt locking back on the last round fired. Though a common and very useful feature today, this was nearly unheard of at the time, especially for a submachine gun.
Three different magazine sizes were available: 10 rounds magazine, 30 rounds magazine (which was the most common), 40 rounds magazine which has to exist since its confirmed by documents, but Im yet to see one.
Its chambered for the powerful 9x23 Largo, which was quite popular in Spain at the time, but rather unpopular with the rest of the world, which coupled with the steep price of the gun made it undesirable on the international market.

A later variant, known as Star TN 35 “Atlantic” was tested by the US Army and Britain but was rejected. To clear up some misunderstandings: It’s a different variant and Western Allies have never used, adopted or even tested the Star SI 35. I have a dedicated section a bit later to the variant that was tested by the US.

With no orders to fulfill, the production of all Star 35 variants ceased in 1942.
The only nation to officially adopt the Star SI 35 was Spain, though it’s likely that German and Italian volunteers also used them during the civil war and maybe even took some home.
Personally I believe that the most logical in-game inclusion would be a Spanish Blue division premium squad armed with this weapon.
It could be either BR2 or BR3 and naturally, it should be for Axis.

Ammunition: 9x23 Largo (10, 30 or 40 rounds detachable box magazine)
Muzzle velocity: 380 m/s
Weight: 4.5 kg loaded and 3.8 kg unloaded
Length: 900 mm
Barrel length: 270 mm
Rate of fire: 700 rounds per minute or 300 rpm or semi-auto (selectable)

Star TN 35 “Atlantic” in 38.super

Having realised that the Star SI 35 is too expensive, a simplified variant without the fire rate selector was developed and to help attract sales, starting in 1941, Star sent guns for testing to Germany, the US and Britain, each batch of guns was slightly different as Star adjusted each batch of guns to the nation´s logistics.

The great powers showed no interest in these guns, as the US report stated: they were old and expensive.
The TN 35 submachine guns sent to the United States were dubbed “Atlantic” after the import agency that imported them. While not an official designation, it is a convenient name that makes differentiating this unique variant easier.
Only four Star TN 35 “Atlantic” guns in 38. Super were sent to the US for testing, sounds like even God wanted the “Atlantic” SMG to be a battle pass weapon.

The “Atlantic” variant made for the US was pretty unique as the gun was chambered for the 38. Super, had a front grip added and a modified bayonet lug to accept a M1905 bayonet.
Tom Nelson reported that the fire rate for the “Atlantic” was 508 rounds per minute rather than the 700 rpm as on previous variants.

I personally think that the Star TN 35 “Atlantic” with its high muzzle velocity and bayonet would make a really cool US themed BR1 or BR2 submachine gun and be a nice alternative to the 45.acp guns.

Ammunition: 38.super (30 rounds in detachable box magazine)
Muzzle velocity: not specified, but should be similar to 9mm based on 38.super´s characteristics.
Weight: 4.5 kg loaded and 3.8 kg unloaded
Length: 900 mm
Barrel length: 270 mm
Rate of fire: 500 rounds per minute

Naturally, it must be a US submachine since this variant was only sent to the United States.
Also, I see absolutely no reason why it should be available in the tech tree, so I limited the voting options accordingly.

What a coincidence. I recently visited the military museum here in Prague. And I saw some Spanish SMG from the Spanish Civil War there.

I don’t remember exactly if it was the exact one you’re suggesting now. But I liked the way it looked. And I thought it was a shame it’s not in Enlisted.

So you definitely have my support.

Apparently ‘normal’ full-auto was removed from the gun on US version, only (awkwardly called) slowed down mode with 508 cyclic rate was left.

There exists a rather amusing document, authorizing purchase of 150000 ‘Atlantic-Aris’ SMGs with 10k cartridges for each gun, signed by on other than Joseph Stalin of all people.

Someone was really desperate for guns back in 1942.
Of course, nothing came out of it. Would have lead to rather curios correspondence for a lot of people at the time.

I heard about the story, but didnt think it was real.

but according to this post, the Soviet guns were in 9mm Largo, so Soviets could maybe get their own variant of “Atlantic” SMG in 9mm Largo.
