Both Panzer IV and T3485 have 140 - 150mm of armor pen.
Panther has close to 200mm of pen.
And ? So T34-85 is more than capable to deal with BR4 tanks it faces.
Infact even the BR3 t-34(-41) can 1shot panther.
So for what exact reason is this necessary at BR3 ? Is it worse than T34-85 ? Absolutely, but if we go with this logic, either Tiger’s should be BR4 and panthers BR3 or viceversa, and all PZ4’s BR2 because 99% of time the next unlock is always better than the previous.
That however for obvious reasons doesnt mean its place is in BR3.
Unless theres a valid reason to have SU-85 at BR3 ? Which I cant think of since theres plenty of BR3 tanks capable to deal with uptiering.
Marders reason for BR2 is the uptiering against KV & Shermans where majority of other BR2 fails miserably.

Almost every one here agrees that having no turret, no MG or being op top qualifies a vehicle with a good gun to be lowered in BR.
The main gun of a tank is NOT the only criteria of BR placement.

If your argument lowering SU is that its worse than T34 at BR4, then how come same doesnt apply to panther ?
This is ridiculous argument, majority of high end GE tree should be lowered because theres always something better.
SU is just as capable as T34 to kill other tanks in BR4, regardless it is worse. That just is how progression is made in the game.

Dude, Panther has a BR5 gun with BR5 frontal armor, but BR4 turret armor. By opinion of most on this forum Panther is BR4 because of its bad mobility - which makes sense, it has 3mph max reverse speed.
Also majority of current Soviet tanks can NOT penetrate Neither Tiger nor Panther frontally.
Exceptions are KV2 and T34 57.
SU85M is worthless, its armor would be OP in BR3, but in BR4 there is zero reason to use it - which is the entire reason for this discussion, regular SU85 has like half its frontal armor, which would be totally fair in BR3. This logic is completely reasonable.
If you really think SU85 would be unfair in BR3 I have no words left for you except “skill issue” - which does not come lightly from me.

Funny that you mention KV2, a tank with actual survivability is BR3 but sig is BR3 only because of the gun.

Tiger II has almost 250mm of pen, which would be the equivalent of BR6 fire power, Tiger II H cant be penned by majority of BR4 tanks, while Tiger II P actually can. Funnily the difference between Tiger II P and Panther is quite small when fighting in BR4.
I dont know what kind of pixel hunting you are doing, but that tank does not have 100mm of penetration.

Machine gun port which is incredibly hard shot to make esp in games lol as the German mg ports a are especially small in fact so small that ppl don’t even go for it in wt and instead go for the barrel

Well I cant pen KV with majority of BR2 tanks either.
mg port, relatively easy as it shows green even from far away.
Id say GE BR2 tanks struggles with BR3 tanks too so, for what exact reason pixel hunting should be exclusively a GE problem ?
Kv can be penned by pretty much all tanks it faces even angled except chi nu lol

Me personally I’d love to see the hetzer at br 3 in the future. Which has more armor than the su85 and similar gun performance and a mg……
