The SU-85 was a Russian tank destroyer that was built around the new D-5T tank gun, made as a stopgap while a new model of T34 was being designed to accommodate the much bigger cannon than the comparatively small F-34 cannons common on T34s. This vehicle is not to be confused with the SU-85M, a later development of the SU-85 we have in game, as there are some key differences between the two. While the Su-85M has much thicker armor, 75mms thick and heavily angled, which puts it 100+ mms thick effectively, the SU-85 has a much thinner hull of 45mms thick and at the same angle, which is the same as normal T34s since it uses the same chassis, with around 65mms of effective armor. In addition, there are two weak spots that will allow BR2 tanks to fight it without it being completely invulnerable; the slight bulge in the armor top left of the mantlet is 45mms thick and the cupola is 20mms thick. I think that this would be a good BR3 vehicle, with a BR4 gun and BR3 armor with a few weak spots. Here are some images below of the armor, credit to @Valkay taken from his older post on the same vehicle (Su-85) since I can’t get my screen to zoom into the vehicle better for whatever reason.
Should the SU-85 be added to the Soviet BR3 tech tree?
I don’t know why this vehicle hasn’t been added yet. It would fill the gap between BR3 and 4 vehicles nicely without being overpowered or overshadowing current BR3 tanks.
Because it’s the exact same one as on the T34 85 D5T, IS-1, and Su-85M, so nothing new by any means. The gun, as I said, is BR4, but is balanced for BR3 by it having basically T34 armor but able to be penetrated in a few spots by BR2 tanks. So why are you against this?
And? It’s not a super powerful gun by any means, essentially a slightly more powerful KwK 40 L/48 stat wise. Besides, it sees BR3 in downtiers, and isn’t anything particularly special.
Are we serious? Having a slightly more powerful cannon than average for the BR on a weaker base is a good way for that tier to combat higher BR tanks without being too powerful due to their severe downsides, but I guess with your logic, the M10 is the same as the Sherman 76s, the Marder the same as the long Panzer 4s, Ho-Nis the same as the Chi-Nu, ect. (and spoiler, nobody complains about these being too powerful)
This honestly makes me think you’ve never used tank destroyers in game before. this is something that you understand when you decide to use a tank destroyer, in exchange for the better gun, you sacrifice the convenience of normal tanks and are severely disabled to some capacity, with being casemate and having no machine guns especially hurting in an infantry based game.
Normally BRIV cannon in 3 is very special… no surprise you are downplaying it when you mention it once without justification until provoked.
Why should soviets get this luxury? You could also learn weakspots.
You aren’t supposed to be effective against uptiered tanks… smacking pz 3s with your sherman you’re met with a wall when you face a panther… unless you learn the weakspot.
However the 76 i don’t recall having that good of pen anyway albeit it does have aphe it may not even be able to pen panther mantlet so i can’t really apply that argument here so fair enough.
Correct. Why would i hinder myself with such scruples when the main focus of a tank is inflicting mass amounts of damage against enemy infantry… ironic given the next quoted comment.
Marder 2 even has an mg and extremely powerful gun but once again that’s open top.
Once again convenient that three of those tanks you list including the example are open top.
However with the m10 being open top is probably why they downtiered it besides it being useless otherwise so i suppose casemate is also a valid reason.
Well, if you are set in your opinions, especially without actually using tank destroyers, I won’t waste my time trying to convince you otherwise in a long debate that goes nowhere, and simply agree to disagree.
Post pen damage is unrealistically OP in Enlisted, in reality Soviet 85mm guns, US 76mm Shermans and Panzer IV L48 guns are all very comparable and pretty much BR4 guns.
What weakspot does a Panther have that a KV1 can penetrate? All a KV can do is barrel sniping.
Also Panzer IV J - H has 140+ pen, which is already enough to take out BR4 armor. Sure Panzer IV are glass canons with their BR1 like turret armor, but regular SU85 has only 45mm of armor like regular T34.
For having no turret or MG its more than fair having a 85mm gun in BR3. Also for your information, T34 57 already has around 140 pen, just less post pen damage, so adding a SU85 wouldn’t change much anyways.
Is it just about 85mm having too much damage then? Fundamentally I would agree here, but generally speaking post pen is messed up and needs an overhaul anyways.
SU85M is just the same besides slight visual changes, mantlet and armor.
Use that.
Tell me which is which, oh wait you can’t (this is sarcastic i have to note but it’s nowhere near the same as tiger 2 P vs H) and neither can any other player so if you want to use iconic su85 which to note again the su76 was more iconic then play in BRIV.
