The new type of pistol used by the Japanese army: Model 26 pistol
The Meiji 26th Year Model Pistol was the first domestically produced standard revolver in Japan, which was finalized in 1893 (the Meiji 26th year). It was designed and manufactured by the Tokyo Artillery Factory. This gun combined the middle-retracting automatic ejector design of the Smith-Vinson No.3 and the side-opening design of the French Mle.1892, and fired 9x22mmR revolver cartridges.
This gun began production in 1893 and had a total production of approximately 50,000 to 60,000 units. It was discontinued in 1923 due to the Great Kanto Earthquake that destroyed the Tokyo Artillery Factory. In 1935, the remaining parts were used to assemble the last batch. It was mainly equipped for the Japanese cavalry units and participated in the Russo-Japanese War. By the time of World War II, it had become seriously outdated, but it was still in use in secondary units, police forces, and pioneer groups.
