The case for the M24 Chaffe's M61 APCBC, a nuanced comparison

Well just as the title states, the M24 needs it’s APCBC both to be historically accurate as well as to be useful in tank v tank encounters. But instead of just asking for it I’ll make a good comparison as to why I believe it should happen.

As of now, the M24 is currently using M72 solid shot, which not only is has the lowest pen aside from the HE shell, but as a very late war tank I think it didn’t even use.

These are screenshots take directly from the M24’s Technical Manual TM 9-729, sadly it’s the 1951 edition and try as I might I was not able to get my grubby hands on any of the 1944 versions, but AFAIK all of the Chaffee’s sights are graduated the same and had the very same reticles.

Finally from the same manual we have the table of authorized rounds for the 75mm gun M6, and as you can see, the first 2 are both for the M651 and it’s improved variant, the M61A1 and then a whole lotta of M48 HE types of fuzzes and the WP smoke rounds, so as you can see, as far as I could research, the M24 only ever used M61 APCBC as it’s main AT round.

Now, I can hear you say “You are always ranting about historically accurate things and variety and such” and while true, today I come here not only armed with documents but also with how the Chaffee is balanced in Enlisted’s parent game War Thunder.

As you can see, currently the M24 is located at RB 3.7, which actually places it neatly in the middle of both US 75mm Shermans we have in game, a little over the M4A1 Sherman (RB 3.3) and just behind the M4A2 (RB 4.0) and on par with the Pz.IV H (RB 3.7)

Why? You might ask, well, for the very same reason it was made, it’s a speedy agile tank with a gun that can pen a Tiger 1 thru’ the front.

My proposal here is simple, as many others before me have been asking FOR YEARS at this point, and many others will say, please, give the Chaffee it’s M61 APCBC! Now where I come in is to say that it should also be balanced accordingly to BR III as it is a late war vehicle after all.

  • Keep poor Chaffee as is (It remains in BR II)
  • Give the Chaffee it’s rightful M61 APCBC (Move to BR III)
  • Move Chaffee to BR III but don’t give it M61 (Chaotic evil option)

I’ve brought you historical documents, I’ve brought you gameplay balance in WT, I’ve even included a 3rd option so that @Zepuoj can’t say I have a biased poll, so with this I’ve done everything in my power to make a case for the Chaffee’s M61, so please, pretty please, do it for us as a late new years miracle or something.

This is finally the post were I go full

And well, with that, thank you very much for reading as always, enjoy you weekend people, see you on the game!

Chaffe has the same issue as Puma, most Enlisted maps dont offer enough space for flanking or even if they do, the enemy tank is in grey zone so BR2 is rather reasonable for Chaffe.
M61 shot would not a big enough improvement for it to be BR3, not when M4A2 has the same cannon but much better armour.

The fact that people seem to be leaning more towards it remaining with just plain AP but at BR II just tells me that either I just don’t get the community or the game just has no hope at any attempt at realism, either way, dayum, I was not expecting this tbh, if it continues like this I might just as well retire myself from making any suggestions ever again, like fr.

I would be pissed if the tank I payed for my BR2 lineup was sent to BR3. Rergardless of it gaining M61.

every time we add something real, other factions ask to have it as well.
StG44 – > every faction gets ARs now.
Me262 and Meteor – > even post war jet is added to keep things 1:1
AVT-40 – > T20, Type Hei auto, FG42 buff

Im still hoping to see a realistic game mode to be honest, but I think there are bigger realism problems than a tank having training shells instead of combat shells.
You know, things like every soldier being armed with a prototype machine gun or Pacific equipment finding their way to Europe and vice-versa, time travelling vehicles…

I mean, that’s balance after all I guess, and even tho’ the devs seem to pursue it in some of the weirdest ways sometimes, I don’t see how that anything to do with the M24 getting M61 tbh.

why are you using the M24 to battle tanks? it’s an infantry support tank. hence its light armor… its perfect for getting to HE positions quickly lol i really do not get the crusade for this… just use… the crusader

Also why would you want a light tank in BR3? Seems the same type who advocated for Sig being BR3 (Screw the noobs… they should see it and go “wow!! there is 150mm cannon!!! how do i get?!?”)

I would use the sluggish churchill over this even with apc at 3… atleast that randomly bounces shots… and can pen panthers as it stands.

Why is there no option for m61 at br 2? Bias poll

Actually no, theres an option to keep it as is, so it’s not a bias poll

I say give Chaffee the M61 shot and keep it at BR2

Is there an option for m61 and keep it at br 2 which is a popular opinion?

Every other nation has explosive filler in its at round so it’s kinda the opposite of what ur claiming.

No faction has a turreted tank with ~75mm gun that has high penetration and explosive filler on br2.
I can imagine certain players will ask for Panzer4 F2 to br2 if this was implemented.

This will also be a bit P2W consider all br2 us tank has mediocre post pen due to the use of HEAT round or solid AP round.

All tech tree us tanks also have quicker reloads

You’re completely forgetting this little stat called rof. Which Chaffee has the third slowest of the br behind su76m and the worst tank in the game

78mm of pen is not enough to pen the 80mm hull of panzer 4h.
But it is possible with the 104mm for the M61 APCBC.

Sure, but it might need several round to have the effect of one round with explosive filler. Is the reload time several times quicker for other US tank?

You are acting like the Chafee rof slow is is2 or kv2 kind of slow.

Difference being those tanks having exceptional he and actual armor. Like let’s do this. No American or Russian or Japanese tank has a 75mm close turreted tank with a sub 4 second reload at br 2

You are a bit nitpicking I guess. Sure you can put more criteria so other tank can’t fit.

Just following ur example hypocrite.
