The B6N2 Model 11, also known as the 天山一一型 (Tenzan, or holy/heavenly mountain, model 11) was a further development of the IJN’s B5N2 torpedo bomber, and is an overall improvement in every regard. One of the biggest issues with the B5N2 was how it had absolutely no offensive armament, but the B6N1 does have a 7.7mm machine gun with 400 rounds in the left wing, which can’t do very much, but is better than nothing. Another big improvement compared to the B5N2 with its 378 Kph max speed, was how the B6N1 improves it 464 Kph. The rate of climb also saw huge improvement, going from 6.5 m/s to 11.1 m/s. A ventral gunner was added as well, also armed with a 7.7mm machine gun. As for bombload, it had the same options available to the B5N2, but I think that the layout of six 60kg bombs would be best, so it can carpet bomb fairly well while not being too strong for the BR. A total of 133 were made over its production life, and it participated in various operations like the Battle of the Phillipine Sea and the battle of Leyete Gulf. I think that this would be a well balanced attacker plane for Japan’s BR1 tech tree to replace the E13, which is one of the worst planes in game.
Should the B6N1 mod.11 be added to the Japanese tech tree?
yes, i support adding it. it brought me great joy in wt sim, hunting enemy convoys with torpedoes. but why br1 when the inferior B5N is br2?
i guess it would br br2 with 2x250kg, as well as with 6x60kg.
assuming it would receive the same performance boost as enlisted’s b5n, br3 with 1x800kg (otherwise br2 as well).
I think that as it is now, the B5N2 could honestly go to BR1 and be a sidegrade to this with a better payload, given how hard it struggles in some areas (Move the B5N2 to BR1, it goes into more detail for my justification if you’re curious). And I mean, six 60kg bombs isn’t all that crazy a payload for an attacker on BR1 either. The Bf 109 E7/U2 has four very similar 50kg bombs as a fighter, as well as the Potez 633 having its dual 200kg bombs, and has a fairly similar flight performance to my knowledge.
I had thought about suggesting it with this, but in the end decided against it. If it was implemented in that way, it would make it nearly impossible for there to be an alternate payload version for low BR (unless they do something like how they did with the A20’s with the 500kg bombs and M8s), which I think is more needed there given how poor the E13 plays. I do want an attacker with a 800kg in BR3, however I think that one of the Ki-49s or Ki-67s would be better fit for this IMO, but I’m still not fully decided.
but what about balance? remember that the only br1 attacker the usa get is the seagull, and the soviets have no br1 attacker at all.
it’s only the potez that is an outlier in terms of br1 ordnance for attackers. in fact, its 200kg is better than the british 500lb; i would agree if someone suggested it should be moved to br2. according to the resource spreadsheet, a5m’s 60kg is very similar to the 250lb in the allied hurricane, so that’s alright. now, the soviet br1 fighters do pack quite a punch in comparison to japan and western allies, which gives merit to your suggestion. but then the balancing act would be to add a fighter. a ki-43-ii with 2x100kg would fit better (more agile but with worse armament, so worse at wiping AI bomber wave).
All these points are true, no other comment on that, but your other point…
That’s also something that needs to be addressed as well. It would be relatively easy to do this for the soviets, as I could sort of see the Pe-3 (as it is) or the Pe-2-31 (with the 100kgs changed for 50kg bombs) being lowered to BR1, as they are absolutely dreadful to use on BR3 when the Su-2 M82 is leagues better and on BR2. Both have very long turn times and generally bad flight performance, but it would have decently better guns to make up for it. and either four 100kg bombs or six 50kg wouldn’t be too powerful I think, but there are other options from WT if those wouldn’t work on BR1.
As for a new allied attacker for BR1, there are a few candidates that can be taken from WT, but I’ll only list this one because I haven’t looked into it much, but the Wirraway could fit this role - what looks like a decent flight performance (although idk how the turn speed would translate into Enlisted, since the 2 games have different ways of measuring it), two 7.7mm machine guns and a 7.7mm gunner, with either four British 250kg bombs or two British 500lb bombs.
