I’m so sick of seeing players with names like SSLAH, Peiper, Himmler, etc. Why isn’t there a filter or a blacklist to block these people or prevent them from choosing such names in the first place?
As a German citizen, I’m so sick of seeing some stupid Nazi idiots in every World War II shooter with names that make my blood boil.
It’s simple: Ban those names. Add a rule stating that anyone who circumvents this ban by using special characters or alternative spellings will be banned for three months. Word will spread quickly, and people will think twice—or five times—before naming themselves after war criminals =)
As a developer, you just have to have the guts to crack down on this sometimes. This renaming policy is a joke and accomplishes nothing.
This applies not only to German generals, etc., but also to Stalin, Mussolini, and so on.
I agree too , but there are some names that should be banned like the ss one and anything relating to Hitler, but if they start blacklisting names who knows what also happened? I’m just saying.
I’m curious… where is the line drawn, exactly…? If the criteria is just “it makes me uncomfortable”, “controversial”, or “offensive”, then that list can become quite, quite long…
I agree that there aught to be some limitations, but I don’t think it can be agreed where those should end.
Should anyone named Miklós Horthy also be subject to this ban? Are all Axis leaders autoatically included? Boris III?
How about Sir Arthur Harris, head of RAF Bomber Command?
What about Winston Churchill? There are quite a lot of people whose blood boils from this man.
How about Emperor Hirohito? He was never deposed after the war, and continued to act as a international Head of State for decades to come, but large swathes of East Asia absolutely despise anything related to WW2 Japan, and thus him (or Japan in general). Is offending their sensibilities more or less okay because we’re Westerners and they’re not?
Best ban all German military officials from WW2 - they willingly worked for a Nazi regime, sorry Rommel fans.
What about President Truman…? He vaporised between 150 to 250 thousand people with the atomic bombs over Japan… isn’t that offensive to gloat about?
Can I use Adolf in any nickname…? That’s a perfectly legitimate regal name in my country - who are you to lord over my country’s different sensibilities? That would be quite culturally insensitive…

Caesar did a lot of things that could be considered War Crimes during his time in Gaul…

You know what, Christian II of Denmark (also refered to as “Kristian Tyrann” or “Christian the Tyrant”) was a genocidal maniac who murdered quite a lot of my countrymen. I demand this name be censored, too - I don’t want to see that shit anywhere near me.
You have to admit that there is nothing more unexpectedly funny in this game than joining a match with Soviets and finding “Hitler14!” Playing at yourside.
Jokes aside, I think you are over reacting a bit. This is a WW2 game, “Heer soldat” “Zhukov’s Soldier” or “RommelDaBest” are just impractical names, but nowhere near the same as having names calling out for genocide, openly glorifying war crimes or making statements about politicans.
Yall just too sensitive, there is nothing wrong with the names. bad or good every person is historical figure. either we have to go to bottom line and demand ban and censor to everything related to “crimes” or we should just accept the current situation. We have friggin SS and NKVD units in game already.

I mention all the historical figures. As far as I know, the German ones are the most popular. Of course, there are others besides the German ones. I point out all of them; I just named the German ones as an example.

What offends the typical German isn’t the same thing that would offend the typical Indian or Korean.
Neither would what offends the typical Christian be what offends the typical Hindu.
All without going into that individual people differ too, of course. There is no objective standard to what causes offence.
And are you sure you only want this rule to be enforced only against people…? You brought up a organization originally (1st SS Division, which by the way… we already have both SS and NKVD squads in game) - so it’s not just about people, though…?
I lived in Kanchanburi Thailand about 150m from the Tourist version of the Bridge on the River Kwai.(It was on the Kwai noi). My landlady lived there when that all went down. What they don’t tell you is 100k+ SE Asians died building said railroad only a handful were Thais. Going on that train ride seeing the conditions they worked in were hellish to say the least. That part of Thailand gets surface of the sun hot in April. The Japanese were absolute savages the landlady I mentioned HATED Them and she was almost 90. They would put on a month long show in December pretending like it was the past. The most upset I ever saw someone was a Aussie vet having to listen to some idiot Aussie politician excuse the war crimes Japan committed during war remembrance day (Its a big deal in Kanchanaburi)

This place actually has a feeling a dread. Like a dark cloud and suffocating tensity. That whole thing about evil personified is this place. S21 but if I named my guy Pol Pot 76 80% of you would not even get the reference.
Some very inhumane things happened to people here. Lots of people. This was the Khmers main torture camp in Phenom Penh. Killing Fields are pretty bad as well but this was hell on earth. Not even a war crime but social cleansing. That city is still creepy as fuck! And still dangerous.
