Historical Background and Scale of Captured Weapons

During the Dutch East Indies campaign in the spring of 1942, the Imperial Japanese Army captured the arsenals of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL). Among other wealth, the Japanese acquired specific models of small arms that were perfectly suited for jungle warfare.

Madsen carbine-machine gun in the American guide on Japanese weaponry “Handbook on Japanese Military Forces, TM-E 30-480, C6, Changes No. 6” (War Department, 15 Sep 1945).

According to the Japanese army report 第３編 「ジャバ」島に於ける調査事項 (Part 3: Survey Items on “Java” Island) (JACAR Archive, code C14110703700), the following was captured on the island of Java alone:

The document separately records the capture of 430 functional 6.5mm Madsen light machine guns. At the same time, impressive stockpiles of captured ammunition of the same caliber guaranteed uninterrupted supply and allowed the weapon to be actively used in combat.

What is a Karabijnmitrailleur?

The Dutch colonial Madsen differed from the standard long-barreled machine gun. The KNIL required a weapon for mobile infantry assault groups, capable of overcoming the “last 300 meters” of an attack in harsh jungle conditions.

Initially, cavalry Madsen M.15s were purchased in 1915. However, in 1926–1927, the Dutch radically modernized them at the arsenals in the city of Bandung. The weapon received the official designation “Carbine-Machine Gun” (Karabijnmitrailleur) .

Its main differences:

• The barrel was drastically shortened by 25 cm (down to 350 mm).
• The overall weight was reduced by 2 kg .
• The weapon was equipped with double-length telescopic bipods.
