(Here as a past similar post I have made, but please put any comments into this post. As this previous one is not fully up-to-date.)
What is a legacy squad?
Before November 2023, Enlisted was split into campaigns. Each with two nations and a different set of squads for each theatre of war. So, essentially, there were multiple Sniper 1 squads, across the campaigns (you could not use squads between campaigns). You can actually see some of the vehicle legacy squads when you view vehicle squad options in the tech tree.
With the implementation of the merge, there was only a need for one of every squad type, thus many of these legacy squads were made unavailable. But players who played pre-merge could still use these squads, even now and newer players still have no way of acquiring them.
How is this relevant?
Despite being unavailable for over two years, these squads still see developer time and changes.
For example:
(Far Eastern front update)
Alongside the introduction of more Italian and British customisation which can be further utilised by legacy squads.
This content is inaccessible to the majority of the player base. If you joined post-merge (after ~Novermber 2023), this is material that you are missing out on.
From the Enlisted resource, there are:
-99 European axis (Germany and Italy) legacy squads.
-45 Soviet legacy squads.
-47 Allied (USA and Britain) legacy squads.
All of which are unobtainable.
Why would I need legacy squads?
While most of these squads are very similar in performance to the current tech-tree squads, there are other benefits.
Sub-factions
The Tunisia campaign had both Italian and British squads. Therefore players, could create a full Italian and British squad deck without event or premium squads.
While, there are enough British squads to form a full deck (what I would consider three infantry squads and a vehicle). Only two Italian squads have returned (engineer and machine gunner 1), so players cannot play with a pure Italy line-up (aside from premiums and event squads).
On top of this, the incorporation of British squads has taken away some squads from the US, you can no longer get an American mortar squad and the M4A2 Sherman has to be used by a British tanker squad.
Squad composition
Some of these legacy squads do have a slightly different set of upgrades. Both in weapon upgrades and squad upgrades. Some of the Stalingrad and Pacific legacy squads can use a medic, etc.
Having multiple squads also allows players to have a unique squad with different specialists and weapons. That can easily be equipped by simply using a different squad.
These are just a few of the benefits.
Concerns
Squad-cycling
With more squads of the same type, players will be able to take the same squad type into battle. While this could be potentially poor for gameplay. Despite this, players can already cycle; assaulters, riflemen, snipers, machine gunners, tankers (at high BR) and aircraft (at high BR) by using only tech-tree squads. Furthermore, the number of squads on the battlefield will remain the same and players with legacy squads can still cycle squads right now.
And, this problem would only be an issue if ,we assume, the state of the game remains the same in this regard.
Developer time
Of course, there are you may think there are more important aspects of the game for the developers to work on. Which is reasonable, given the rate of content output.
But legacy squads are fully functional, and simply need a way to be obtained. The developers have no pressing need to alter or tweak them. In the last update, they even created a new squad to come with the B-25.
Players on the Chinese version on Enlisted can already buy legacy squads, so returning them is not exactly something new to Enlisted.

This is referring to the 412th fighter regiment which was the legacy attacker pilot 2 squad for Normandy.

(I can’t upload the in-game logo right now, but it can be seen if you look at the available squads for the P-47.)
What if I already have loads of legacy squads?
There are still numerous pre-merge players who own many legacy squads, but there is an even smaller group of players with ALL the legacy squads. So there are still more squads to get.
Players with legacy squads (like myself) are also decreasing in proportion to players without legacy squads. As anyone who downloads the game now, will not have any legacy squads. Regardless of how much money or time they spend (Previously, you could literally get some would-be legacy squads by simply downloading the game pre-merge. Like the 503rd heavy panzer battalion, which was the free tanker 1 squad for the Berlin campaign).
Conclusion
Bringing back legacy squads can provide multiple benefits for a variety of new and old players (like LARPers or competitive players). Through customisation, combat ability and for simple quality of life changes. This will also give pre-merge players access to content they have been blocked from for over two years. On top of being (what is presumably) an easy set of work for the developers to implement.
