A long time ago, the Sd.Kfz.251/9 was finally added as an event reward. The only problem is it was made into an APC when it should have been a tank. Just to clarify I am only using tank as a catch-all for combat vehicles since everyone will understand what I mean and the 2 vehicle slots covers different types of vehicles from tanks to SPAA to self propelled guns etc whose job is to support the infantry.
It is inaccurate for the 251/9 to be an APC. While the base vehicle Sd.Kfz.251 was an APC whose job was to carry an entire squad of infantry into battle, it’s many other variants were not and they were used in different specialized roles. The same can be said about some of the other nation’s vehicles such as the American M3 GMC, a tank destroyer built on the M3 Halftrack. These vehicles were designed to fulfill other roles to support the infantry. They were used as weapon platforms and had to carry a new weapon system such as flamethrowers, AA guns, AT guns, etc in this case a howitzer, a crew, and all the ammunition.
The Sd.Kfz.251/9 should be reimplemented as a tank. If it’s too hard or impossible to change all the ones people currently have then grudgingly they could keep it as a legacy content APC, but this incorrect 251/9 APC must be removed from Gold Box circulation. In that case a new 251/9 can be added to the game. It can be in the RT, or maybe even an event or premium. The only thing that matters is that when this vehicle is reimplemented it is a proper tank.
Also, let it be made clear that this mistake must never be repeated to future Halftrack combat support vehicles. They are just low BR combat vehicles.
So germany will be the only nation without an event APC?
As much as I hate the president it sets having some 251/acting as APC and some as tanks would be really wierd and even more strager if they also have diffrent ROF aswell.
If they literally cannot change the current 251/9s that is that specific event vehicle, then anyone who has it can keep it. That is a fair compromise. But there can certainly be other vehicles they could add as true APCs. The true 251/9 would be readded as a tank one way or the other.
Them leaving the 251/9 as an incorrect APC may also have consequences. I’ve seen people say many other halftrack combat vehicles being added as “APCs” like the M3 GMC.
Sdkfz.251/9 ended up as an APC due to dev laziness.
There are many variants of Sdkfz251 and 250 vehicles that could have been added.
But instead the developers just ported a vehicle over from War Thunder, added mobile rally mechanic to it and called it a day.
However, there is a very important problem with adding IFVs to the game as tanks.
In Enlisted, tanks are comically weak, any soldier can carry tank blasting mega dynamite pack. Almost any squad can have a rocket launcher… Tanks had to be weak because everyone has access to them, without any spawm limit.
If you started the game with a machine gun only armoured car, and unlocked a Panzer II or T-60 as the ultimate vehicle for the given BR that you can only spawn if you fulfill certain criteria (thus AT weapons would be much weaker, more limited) than IFVs would make sense, but since tanks are inflated, IFVs just dont make sense because using a tank will almost always be better.
I could only imagine them being their own class for people that want to bypass occupied tank slots but even then, I am not sure if F2P plebs would pick them and it would also raise the question again how many classes a 10 vs 10 game can withstand.
For better or worse, the tank slot is just the combat vehicle slot. It covers light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, self propelled artillery, self propelled anti-tank guns, self propelled anti-air, and flamethrowers. Your tank destroyer could be built on a tank chassis or it’s an AT gun bolted to a halftrack. What’s the point of the Marder 3 and Sd.Kfz.234/4 being separate vehicles if they have the same exact gun and the only difference is the vehicle the gun is on.
It is better and simpler that the system stays as is. Rider and APC have their own slots because they are infantry squads with an extra step. The only thing that matters is the combat vehicle is pretty much any type of vehicle that is meant to support the team whether you’re a Panzer 2 or a Tiger 2
But then what even is the point of a tank slot. There are self propelled guns that have power rivalring actual tanks but they get to be in their own slot while a Panzer 2 is a true tank and thus can be in the tank slot?
That’s why the ultimate point is that in this game the “tank slot” (because we just call it that because it rolls off the tongue) is just any combat vehicle that supports the infantry. You should just choose any vehicle you want and do whatever job you can.
Whether you spawn as a Stug, or one of these half-tracks, a light tank, a heavy tank, a flammpanzer, any and everything
Having real tanks and not weaker half-tracks, especially in higher BRs where less and less tanks are equipped for engaging infantry at close range.
I am not sure how often that would be, especially since this does not prove your point but again that noobs take newbie gear into the wrong BR by accident/ lower BR facing higher BRs. And even if a APC with BR3 is in BR1, it still is vulnerable to most threats.
Heroes and Generals did a better job with this.
You had dedicated tickets for light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, tank destroyers and heavy tank destroyers.
You used up a medium tank ticket by spawning a medium tank.
The power of the tanks scaled with their class.
H&G also had armoured cars available to recons (also using their own tickets)
APCs, trucks, all terrain vehicles, bikes, jeeps for infantry. All costing tickets to spawn.
Would possible in Enlisted too, if devs allowed tank squads to have multiple one vehicle of each class equipped and every match had a limited number of tickets (for example 10 armoured cars, 6 light tanks and 4 medium tanks in BR1-2 match)
Even WT has a ressource system for tanks and SPGs.
It could work if they also adjust equipment freedom we have right now with everyone and their mother being able to kill tanks.
But I also get if people dont want that, people already hate it when others wanted to restrict SFs to Gunners or Assaulters.
My point is I think it would be pointless in a 10 player game with only 2 vehicle slots to have separate slots for specific vehicle types. No matter what, for better or worse, just spawn whatever.
light
medium
heavy
artillery
tank destroyer
AA
flamethrower
That is roughly all the vehicle types. Rider and APC are basically Infantry.
Well, 10 player limit should be increased anyways. We have Tanker, Fighter Plane, Attacker Plane, Paratrooper, Guerilla, APC Driver, Biker, Saboteur/ One-Man Guerilla and at last Infantry. Even if everyone would just have one slot (which many of them dont), we would have eight slots for non-infantry squads and only two squads left… for like eight or so different types.
We could make similar arguments about tons of vehicles. At the end of the day it’s just another vehicle added for variety. If you feel like using it because you happen to particularly like it, so be it. I like to be a little historical and make my loadouts chronologically and randomly pick my units. Why do I sometimes use the Marder 3 and sometimes the Marder 3 H, I just feel like it.
The point is it is inaccurate that the 251/9 was made into an APC, and it should be righted.
Yea adding an APC with tank levels of firepower was absolutely a mistake. It’s effectively allows teams to get additional tanks for “free” (in that it doesn’t take up the two tank slots). It is of my opinion that had the vehicle not been limited by being an event reward it would had been a disaster for game balance.
