I made this poll to fix the awful poll made in this thread:
That poll is way too limited, and does not account for a lot of options, so that’s why I made this one, which is intended to be more objective.
So let’s talk balance, and how it is done in Enlisted.
For this, I will be using the term “Weapon Type”, which can refer to the different, well, types of guns, but also machines.
For example, SMGs would be a weapon type, but tanks would also be a weapon type.
For balance in a WW2 shooter game like Enlisted, there are a couple ways of going about it, and for simplicity’s sake, I gave the three methods each a name:
“Arcade”/Mirror Balance
Arcade balance is purely symmetrical. Both sides get basically identical weapons with identical fire rate and damage. Whether that is historical does not matter. It is the only balancing method that 100% guarantees balance.
“Realistic”/Asymmetrical balance within weapon types
This method of balancing relies on minor differences between weapons within one weapon type to create diversity. For example, the Soviet SMGs in the Moscow campaign have a higher rate of fire, but are less controllable than the German SMGs. However, these weapons are still balanced against each other, meaning that neither side’s SMGs are objectively better than the other side’s. This is the system that Enlisted currently uses.
“Simulator”/Asymmetrical balance within nations
This method of balancing relies on major differences between weapons within weapon types, to the point that the weapon type might slightly favor one nation over the other. However, it relies on these minor strengths/weaknesses between weapon types to balance the nations as a whole. For example, the Soviets could get the T-34 and KV-1 in moscow, which would make the Soviets have much stronger tanks, while the Germans could get a 88mm Flak gun to counter these, making their AT-gun/engineer stronger. This system is the most realistic, but is extremely difficult to balance right.
Premium Exceptions
Lastly, I want to talk about premium exceptions. This system would be in combination with either of the two Asymmetrical Balance systems, but allow for premium squads to have premium or special event weapons or weapon types that would act like the other nation’s weapons. For example, The Soviet premium SMG, the PPK, acts very similar to a non-premium German SMG. Similarly, if the German premium SMG, the MP41, were to be replaced with the Suomi SMG, it would act very similar to a non-premium Soviet SMG. This way there still is diversity, while at the same time to allowing a player to experience all playstyles of a campaign within one nation.
