Played Germans in Normandy after 2 weeks of US

Hi,
So I started out playing the Germans and after finishing that campaign I went to the US and after finishing that campaign I decided I like attacking more it feels a bit more challenging to lets keep playing US and grind towards your perfect teams etc. Last weeks there have been a lot of discussions about X or Y weapon/vehicle or attack/defense what is more op etc. I thought lets give the Germans a go again and see what the fuss is about. So I played 4 hours of Germans and I pressed alt F4 for the first time ever in this game out of rage.

Pro’s:
Weapons still felt stronger then the US counterparts.
Planes felt stronger then US counterparts.
Tanks felt the same to me.
I won 90% of my games. Airfield was a joke to defend, destroyed the Americans all 5 times without them reaching point 3. Same for all invasion maps, won every single one of them and it was all quite easy and nice xp.

Cons:
Everything was still in place for me but after game 3 or 4 of the day I started to feel myself getting annoyed and that grew and grew the more I played invasion maps as the Germans.
Every game, there was at least a fker with a mortar and unlimited ammo. Holy shit is it annoying to spawn and instantly have screenshake and be dead 2 out of 3 times.
Then comes the kicker, when you finally passed the spawncamping mortar, you get to the objective. Oh dear lord, every second there is arty spam the whole time, the entire time every match every objective every waking day. That was not fun. At some point I was shouting at my screen in a non flattering way and nearly tossed the mouse trough it when I died again to a mortar or a arty shell.

I did not manage to finish the day, I stopped playing. First time in over a month I didnt play the game the whole evening when I technically had the time for it.

These things you dont notice as attacker, I mean arty spam is still a thing and its annoying but you move around it. As a defender that is not an option. If the defender has a mortar I will hunt it and murder the bastard dead so I dont get any build up rage from it. As a defender you have to push trough a wave of attackers to get to them so thats hardly a option.

I heared a lot of complaints that the average skill level of the German player is declining. Well from my perspective the average skill level of the US player is increasing. I understand why after today.

I feel everything else is pretty balanced tbh, if the aoe spam is gone we can maybe make a tally again how it is but in the current state, no way to tell what is balanced.

And so we come to the end of the story and the whole point of this post.

We reached our daily quota of the nerf artilery post, rather yesterday than tomorrow. Its killing the game I feel and it needs to stop asap. Mortars as well but thats a bit harder to balance I understand that.

I assume you’re talking about squad mode? I wonder if perception of this depends on the game mode you play in, or maybe things truly are different in solo mode.

I’ve played a decent amount as a defender in solo fighters and didn’t experience any of it. Although it wasn’t in Normandy, basic principles of attacking and defending should be the same. And yet it was quite different from what’s described here.

Mortars barely do anything in solo mode (and you can’t just supply yourself with ammo) so people tend to not use them (and when they do there’s next to no effect). I don’t think I’ve ever seen them do anything noticeable, certainly never died to one myself. Artillery is also not too common or effective, and people try to drop it behind the objective to cut off reinforcements.

yeah maybe the axis weapons are a bit stronger and planes maybe to but i have the feeling the allied players mutate to fucking assholes i had 2 hours of allied spawn camping germans

I only play squads indeed. But its logical that in lone fighter there is less of this. No large groups of enemies to farm.

Have played germans in Normandie for over 100 hours and get used to it. Just a part of the daily game experience.

The AOE spam is universal to all campaigns. Low skill players will always leverage exploitable/abusable mechanics to gain an edge. All you can do is attempt to counter or hope the devs fix things.

I find it shameful people only play with Germany in the Normandy campaign. If you choose the option to choose any team you always end up playing as an American and you only play to die and the Germans farm xp. I leave the game, it’s not balanced and it’s disgusting

Meanwhile, I only play allies, and I have a positive win/loss ratio in Normandy. Most of the time it feels like victory is dependent on three factors, if you have competent players putting down respawn beacons, if you have tank players with chaffees or shermans on open maps - or competent players that are good at anti-tank roles on less open maps, and if you have anyone who can shoot down german bombers.

Bingo. I think arty spam is a problem at the moment, but having the available tools to continually push beacons forward and eliminating enemy vehicles usually dictate whether you will win or lose. A tank with HE and a machine gun will eat squads for days if provided with proper infantry support from detpacks and AT.

you’re absolutely right Evaris it all depends on whether your team does the job well and doesn’t go straight to the goal and die, people don’t know what flanking is.
My experience in the Normandy campaign is, the Americans are going to attack something and the Germans only dedicate themselves to killing without moving, if you are lucky and win well in the German team you will see that the first 4 players have done more than 100 kills , a lot of experience for German players even if they lose

Meanwhile as a US player you canjust endlessly rain mortar shells on the defending germans same with Arty or A-20. Like OP said the AOE spam is a thorn in the flesh as attacker but since you can be spread out over two flanks and the middle it’ll never be the the same horror as for the defender which has one point where at least a reasonable amount of people must hang around.
Oh and Happy news for the defenders if the A-20 run is through there is another potent US CAS plane now which rivals the 110.
Farming XP is not depending on the faction you play.

What do germans not have Radios 250 kg bombs and Mortars? seems like a map problem and not a equipment problem

Where do you read that I said it would be a equipment problem. I said the AoE stuff is a lot more effective for the attacker no matter if it’s US, Ger or the Soviets. It’s simply dictated by the presence of one single POI where the defender must be present.

They certainly don’t have Sherman Jumbos. :roll_eyes:

I agree with the verdict on Normandy’s balance. Weapons, vehicles, ordnance, etc are pretty much universally skewed Axis (except for Axis not having any fighters and kind of the Jumbo? TBH I’ve only seen the Jumbo lose to Panzer IV players, haven’t had the chance to use it myself). The FG42, MG34/42, Gewehr, Panzer IV, Panzer III, Bf110, etc are all significantly better than their US equivalents.

However, most of that doesn’t even matter in the current meta, where most players are trash and it’s mostly a competition between ~4 players on each team to overwhelm the others with tools that are universally obnoxious when not countered. It really doesn’t matter if the Puma or Panzer III is better than the competition if just having an armored MG is already a massive game changer on its own for area denial. It doesn’t matter that the A-20 has 2/3 of the bomb load of the Ju 188 if both can nuke the objective and everything around it. Like, there are most certainly gaps in capability but it barely matters when attacker coordination tends to be the deciding factor of every match.

I’m fairly sure I win 70%+ of my attack matches, it’s kind of rare for my team to lose when attacking, which usually revolves around one or two players using things the team cannot counter. For instance, if I took a plane to keep the Bf110 players rotating out, and there’s a half decent Panzer IV player on the enemy team and all the armor players only have the M5A1, then the team loses.

I’d disagree with the notion that defending is so much worse for artillery though. Sure, attackers generally get two spawns, but it’s almost always a case of the team basically only using one spawn and/or beacon, and funneling in the same way as the defenders. Both sides can flank on every map. In fact, the Germans can flank infinitely easier on D-Day because they get the height advantage and access to the hills to park tanks on.

My guess as to why attackers win a lot comes down to the ease of coordination. All you really need is one or two competent players with engineers and a bunch of brain dead drones throwing themselves at obj to win as attackers, but as defenders you need people willing to basically do nothing on obj to ensure someone doesn’t just sprint in and torch every entrance to the obj and barricading himself in with a wall of fire nobody can get through. Then you need people willing to throw onto obj to contest it when the person holding it inevitably gets squad wiped by explosives or just massed lvl 1s with M1903s. Then you need people able to hold chokepoints, and people that are willing to counterattack to retake lost ground.

I generally only see axis players willing to hold chokepoints and be pickets miles off the obj comprising half the team, then a few that are willing to lemming at the obj same as most of the allied team. There’s a lot more to ask from the defenders in the realm of working together when all the attackers need to do is clear one lane and drop a spawn beacon somewhere close to obj.

Agreed in what you said, I think at first better players were playing Germany and now US, at first I played Germany and was almost all victories, now US is better than before but IMO Germany still better,the german guns are better, the g43 has 10 rounds and the reload is faster that the m1 garand, the mp40 is so much better than the m3a1 grease gun,the US should have gotten the thompson m1a1 there not at level 29!!

i have a few points with your statement : first dont forget that the allied can attack the german planes and bomb the ground at the same time and yes the Ju188 has more bombs but dont has any guns to defend himself and when i play defender most of the time when i loose its because i am the only one that is in the point and get overrun by allied players and to the jumbo yes the jumbo looses often but thats because the players dosent think how they need to fight with it and let them self get flanked

very good opinion. I also have the feeling that the Ju188 has nuclear bombs, otherwise they kill you from 400 meters away they leave you stunned for 20 seconds (it happened to me on the beaches of omaha)
I still think that as an American it is more difficult, also I get to choose the two teams and I have more advanced the US campaign than the Germans because I play more with them. because in my opinion the players prefer to farm killing Americans

please think about it again yes the ju has more bombs and does more dmg but the allied can give air support and kill enemy planes at the same time while the ju cant do shit about it because your a-20 hase guns but the ju dont and i had enough games were wee lost because the allied bombed the germans to hell with 2 planes and to kill them its no fun if you dont have the bf 109 g-10 and even if you have it you have problems while you try to shoot down one of them other gets behind you and than its over
