Plane Expectations Discussion

Simple thread to pool thoughts of what each type of plane should and shouldn’t be doing, to use as a reference for balance ideas.

-Classes of planes that I’ve gathered:
Fighters
Heavy fighters
Attackers
Tactical bombers

-Targets that planes currently go after:
Fighters
Heavier aircraft (than fighters)
Tanks
Mortars
Machine Guns
Concentrated infantry (the objective, spawns, avenues from the spawn)
Rally points

While soft vehicles and fortifications can be destroyed by planes, I can’t imagine them being deliberately targeted the way the game works right now, so I’m not including them.

Anyway:
How effective should each type of aircraft be at combating each target?

Example:
Attackers should be
inefficient against fighters
inefficient against heavier aircraft (than fighters)
effective against tanks
the best option against mortars
very effective against exposed machine guns
moderately effective against infantry (the objective, spawns, avenues from the spawn)
moderately effective against rally points

effective against fighters
effective against heavier aircraft
ineffective against most ground targets

Just to keep this out of the OP, my full expectations:

Fighters should be
the best option against other fighters
effective against heavier aircraft
somewhat effective against tanks
effective against mortars
effective against machine guns
somewhat effective against concentrated infantry
somewhat effective against rally points

Heavy fighters should be:
somewhat effective against fighters
the best option against heavier aircraft
moderately effective against tanks
very effective against mortars and machine guns
moderately effective against concentrated infantry
ineffective against rally points

Attackers should be
inefficient against fighters
inefficient against heavier aircraft (than fighters)
effective against tanks
the best option against mortars
very effective against exposed machine guns

Tactical bombers should be:

Main points about the different targets:

Fighters are agile and likewise need agility to combat, but are also fragile
Heavier aircraft are harder to take down but easier to hit
Tanks are well-armored but move and aren’t always easy to see
Mortars are difficult to spot from the air but are soft and you know their general location
Machine guns are soft and easy to spot if they’re firing but can reposition
Concentrations of infantry are always in the same area but aren’t always present. A pure “guessing” target.
Rally points can’t be seen from the air, but are soft and you can assume their general location, like mortars

So overall:
Fighters should be best against aircraft and mediocre at everything else
Heavy fighters should be good against heavy aircraft and somewhat more effective against ground targets
Attackers should be good at precision targets on the ground
Tactical bombers should be good at hitting general areas on the ground.

I expect to press Space 3 times and dropkick their entire team from orbit. (with a bomber)

This. I feel like we are getting distractred from the core gameplay (which is to bomb things with airplanes) with superfluous stuff nobody wants like tank/infantry additions.

I think we should remove infantry, they are already getting out of hand in this plane game

I just had a “nice” match where enemy bomber constantly wiped out about 10 soldiers per run. Runs were about every minute for the whole match, match lasted about 15 minutes, pure fun.
Next I had another “nice” match but this time we had this bomber.

I have a video of noob-me playing this hell hole. I can send it via priv, I won’t make it public as it causes physical pain.

Ps.
It’s quite grim when your life cycle is directed by one dude in plane doing circles. It reminded me why I made a break from this game.

Agreed. There is no other alternative for people to fly detailed planes and commit tactical bombings without any opposition.

War Thunder is great but there’s a ton of effective AA fire and enemy planes that kept shooting me down.

But WT needs a bit of skill at least, not just pressing space bar and getting a ton of kills :joy:

I know!!! In WT I’d fly in a straight line and get shot out of the sky. it’s heckin BS. I just wanna kill the entire server via muscle memory movements and get dopamine hits from my gigantic score.

Were we in the same match? I also had to deal with one enemy bomber wiping us constantly because our fighters were allergic to actually doing their jobs and the engineers were busy building rally points than an AA to shoot it down.

countering a grossly OP vehicle that can be spammed endlessly really shouldn’t be the meta.

Sounds like my match so maybe.

Was Ver Su Mer here, enemy plane was a Havoc.

Fighters are actually useless in this game, cause even if you get one bomber the next second another one will spawn. Just a waste of time imo, they are only useful to bomb infantry (the ones which have bombs)

You played allies or axis?
If allies, it might have been the second match I played.

Tbh in Normandy almost every match is like that these days regardless of the side you are. Both Ju-188 and the A-20 are ridiculously broken
