New Stats for the Patchett Mk I

New Stats for the Patchett Mk I

“Third time’s a Charm”

A suggestion by @Valkay, and yours truly.

Introduction

Greetings and salutations, bajtársak and fellow forum-dwellers — and happy Christmas to you all!

Yes, it’s me again: the person who apparently cannot stop talking about the Patchett. This is my third suggestion specifically focused on this weapon, but this time I’ve brought reinforcements. This proposal is co-authored with @Valkay, who has been instrumental in refining the statistical side of the suggestion in particular.

Why make a third suggestion?

To keep a long story short: I previously suggested adjusting the Patchett’s stats to move it to BR III. While that suggestion was generally well received by the community, the lack of firm historical sourcing for the proposed Rate of Fire ultimately limited its viability in the eyes of the forum staff and developers.

That original proposal resonated for three main reasons:

  • Its historical prominence

As the culmination of Britain’s wartime SMG development — and the direct ancestor of the famous L2 Sterling series — many (including the both of us) felt the Patchett deserved more than being relegated to a BR I curiosity. At the very least, the most modern SMG in the game should have some upwards mobility within the BR system, allowing it to remain relevant beyond the lowest tiers.

  • The overconcentration of Commonwealth SMGs in low BRs (especially BR I)

With BR I stats, the Patchett failed to meaningfully distinguish itself from its peers. At the same time, there are already four Commonwealth SMGs in both BR I and BR II (excluding the Patchett), while only two exist in BR III. This makes the lower tiers feel unnecessarily bloated by comparison.

  • People want “the Star Wars gun” to be good

There’s not much more to say here — it would be nice if the E-11 Blaster was actually worth using.

Following the most recent major update, the Patchett was moved up to BR II, but no accompanying stat changes were made. As a result, it has gone from being a slightly better Sten Mk I to being a slightly worse Lanchester, making its shortcomings even more apparent.

Importantly, I was also contacted privately by a member of the forum staff and asked to revisit the Patchett suggestion, specifically due to the speculative and insufficiently sourced RoF change in the previous version. The fact that this request was made at all suggests that there is genuine interest from the development side in addressing the Patchett’s current state.

So why aren’t we simply push for BR III, again?

While both of us agree that BR III would be the Patchett’s ideal placement, doing so without clear real-world attributes to justify it (such as magazine capacity or Rate of Fire) would be difficult to defend from a game design perspective. Forum staff have previously raised valid concerns about artificially adjusting stats purely to force a weapon into a different BR.

That logic applies in reverse as well: buffing a weapon purely to justify a higher BR would be equally problematic.

So instead of forcing the issue, we’ve chosen to adapt to the reality of the situation, and will only be pushing for stat changes that will make it relevant to — but still keep it inside of — BR II.

What’s new?

The key difference between this suggestion and the previous one is that these proposed stats are explicitly designed to keep the Patchett in BR II.

The previous Rate of Fire increase has been abandoned. Not only was it poorly received due to insufficient sourcing, but further research (with @Valkay’s help) indicates that the Patchett’s real-world RoF was actually lower than 600 rpm, not higher (which shocked both of us).

Additionally, this suggestion focuses on specific, concrete stat changes, rather than a general “please do something like this” approach. In short: not “something along these lines” — just do this.

Proposed stats

As the Patchett is an event weapon, it is fully upgraded by default. All stats discussed below therefore refer to maximum upgrade values.

We will first outline the proposed changes, then compare the Patchett to comparable SMGs, and finally address the technical justification and sources.

Changes:

  • Increased Damage from 6.6 to 7.0 (with the same damage drop-off over distance as the MP 40)
  • Rate of Fire reduced from 690 rpm to 670 rpm
  • Velocity increased from 370 m/s to 390 m/s
  • Reduced Dispersion from 0.71 to 0.65

Why increase damage?

In Enlisted, weapon damage is influenced by three primary factors: balance, calibre, and muzzle velocity. The Sten Mk II deals slightly reduced damage compared to other 9×19 mm SMGs (6.6 instead of 6.8) due to its lower muzzle velocity.

The Patchett, however, had a noticeably higher muzzle velocity, making its current 6.6 damage value difficult to justify. Furthermore, more modernised wartime SMGs such as the MP 40 and PPS-43 often receive slightly higher damage values than it’s predecessor to reflect their technical improvements. As such, assigning the Patchett 7.0 damage — with the MP 40’s damage fall-off — would be both consistent and reasonable.

The sources for the Rate of Fire and Velocity stats

These two values, in particular, require solid real-world backing.

  • Rate of Fire – 580 rpm:
Spoiler

An Ordnance Board report quoted in A History of the Small Arms Made by the Sterling Armament Company (a official history book by the company that made the gun), page 46, states that the Patchett’s average Rate of Fire was 583 rpm.

Patchett

These Ordnance Board trial Patchetts are technically identical to the later field-trial models (the specific gun represented in the game), as confirmed on page 47 of the same source.
Patchett2

This would make the Patchett the only SMG in Enlisted with a base RoF of 580 rpm (670 rpm once fully upgraded), giving it a distinctly unique firing profile. Also, only a handful of weapons in the game use specific non-approximated fire rates (e.g. the MP41 and M3A1), so this change alone would help set the Patchett apart.

  • Velocity - 390m/s:

This value is necessarily more inferential. Currently, the Patchett uses the same velocity as the Sten Mk II (370 m/s), which is highly unlikely to be accurate. Developmentally, the Patchett sits between the Lanchester (its direct predecessor) and the Sterling series (its direct descendants), all of which exhibit higher muzzle velocities, logic would follow that the Patchett would have a higher muzzle velocity too.

The official manual for the Sterling Mk IV — part of the same weapon family, with the Patchett representing the Mk I — lists a muzzle velocity of 390 m/s.

Given that the Mk I and Mk IV fire the same ammunition and share comparable barrel lengths, it is reasonable to conclude — in the absence of direct Patchett-specific data — that its velocity would be far closer to the Sterling than to the unrelated Sten it currently matches in game.

Conclusion

That’s all from the two of us. Thank you for taking the time to read our suggestion. If you support it, we appreciate it — and if not, we’d very much like to hear why in the replies below.

Lower the RoF and move it back to BR 1. BR 2 is too crowded already.

What’s ur obsession with nerfing and changing the br of everything?

What’s your brain malfunction with how historical statistics and game balancing works?

I need to ask everyone else: does anyone take this guy seriously? Haven’t noticed anyone yet.

Yet you’re always the guy fighting for your life in the comments  cough cough MP18

I personally was happy with the Patchett at BR1, it filled out my eleventh BR1 slot perfectly. Now, it sits unneeded in my already overcrowded BR2. Just as the MP18 sits unused in my overcrowded German BR2.

At this point, I highly doubt the Dev’s would send them back to BR1.

When I first imagined the Patchett, I saw it as something for the BR3. Like the Lanchester Model 1, only better. (And I was kind of hoping for a second version with 50-round mag for the BR4.)

When I saw the Patchett in the HW-25 rewards, I was very happy, but then I was very disappointed that it ended up being a simple copy of the Sten. (AND THE FACT THAT IT’S ONLY ONE, DAMN IT!)

(And yes, I missed the moment when it was slightly buffed and moved to BR2)

It was actually never buffed, it was just uptiered, no stat changes.

Well, I now have a reason to vote yes a second time. But I don’t have the opportunity.
