The M1 Thompson is a BR4 SMG in the Allied tech tree, but it is more fitting for it to be on BR3, in my opinion. Recently with the latest round of BR changes, the M1928A1 (50) was moved to BR4, and is better in pretty much every regard. But there is another Thompson with a stick magazine on BR4 that people have wanted moved down as well, the M1921/28 Thompson, but I think the M1 is the better choice for a downteir, as the M1921/28 is the stronger of the two.
These both share the same damage profile and magazine size, but the 1921/28 has a major advantage in reload speed with a 1.5 second reload compared to a 2.2 second reload. It has a more economical rate of fire of 810 RPM that uses ammunition less quickly and keeps recoil more managable while also staying very aggresive, while the 920 RPM uses ammo faster, reaching near excessive levels, which makes controlling the gun harded. The recoil values themselves also are in favor of the 1921/28, where that one has 12 vertical and 3 horizontal recoil, while the M1 has 14 vertical and 5 horizontal, with a .31 and .4 recoil direction value - the additional horizontal recoil is what makes the M1 a decent bit worse, as you not only have to aim down to counter the recoil, but also more to the side than the other model of Thompson, and combined with the previously stated values, amplifies this aspect. Additionally, the 1921/28 has a much better dispersion value of 0.58 compared to 0.75. Therefore, the M1 should be the Thompson lowered to BR3.
Now as for how the M1 would fit into BR3 without being too strong compared to it’s competitors. Comparing this with the M1928A1 (30) on BR3, which would be it’s main competitor, is the best comparison. The 1928A1 is similar to the 1921/28 in many regards, but is weaker in some areas to fit BR3. It still maintains the slower rate of fire and faster reload. Recoil is still better by one point vertically, though horizontally they have the same value now, but recoil direction is still better at 0.3. The dispersion value is still better than the M1’s, but not as much as the 21/28 at 0.61. So all in all, compared to the 1928A1 (30), it would be a bit better in close quarters with the faster rate of fire, but be worse at range.
