Ideas for the Mortar

Hello, and Good morning/afternoon to all!

Since the first normandy test came out, i got my hands on the Mortar crew. However I felt it lacked many things.
Luckily enough, This suggestion is about those things, from simple quality of life, to ways that introduce better tactics!

Here is a small lists of what can be added:

Lets begin with the big issue, Rangefinding:

  • A Range table (the further away it is, the less precise it will be)
  • Mortar/crew has Rangefinders binoculars (they must be trained, it shows a approximate number, but not exact. Of course the numbers are not Really on the binoculars, its there for a easier reference)
  • Minimap has a Rangetable built in (Can be used for Mortar and/or Marksman (sniper)

Now, What about ammo types?

  • Mortars should have by default Smoke rounds, special grenades that, on impact, create a smoke cover, for a limited time.
  • White phosphorus should be introduced as well. However i feel this round would be highly controversial, so i feel the Phosphorus is limited in power. It will try to force the germans/russians/americas (depending on who is who) to move out of the area, those who remain will be burned.
  • Ammo can be selected before spawn, however Phosphorus cannot be restocked at regular Ammo stations.

Now let’s look at Perks, Buff, and Quality of life:

  • Mortarman can select a range of perks/buffs, this includes the following:
  1. Precision - gives a 5-10% accuracy buff.

  2. Spread - While less precise, the user can “rapid fire” there mortar. While not accurate, it can suppress or if you get lucky, harm or kill somebody. Best used with Smoke and WP.

  • Upgrades to the Mortarman:
  1. Extra crate: Gives 25-50% more ammo.
  2. Restock: Special rounds like WP can be resupplied, however its limited to 5 per minute
  3. Flare rounds: Able to blind those who look at it temporarily. Emits a strong light on dark maps, however can be shot down if the Flare gets shot, or the Parachute gets to many holes.
  4. Airbus: A timed mortar that explodes above ground. (I believe these were prototypes)

That is all i have as of now.

Anyway, i must go, I wish all a Safe and productive day!

And to the Devs: Keep up the work, Happy to support people who care about there game!

Soviet 50mm mortars were fire support - they fired HE by default - not smoke, and I don’t know that they ever had WP or flare rounds of any variety.

It’s a nice suggestion but ahead of it’s time. We don’t need improving mortars right now because fixing them is on higher priority. You see, mortars can have unlimited ammo if stacked together with the ingeneer class and that’s the biggest problem with mortars. Mortars are right now OP and broken. What we need the most is limiting the ammo and removing the indicator that tells the mortarmen the exact range of the base

And the fact they can hide inside spawn.

I watched a player use his engineer to drop 3 ammo boxes for his mortar squad where he spawned and then he stayed there and spammed mortar rounds for a long time. I have been on the receiving end of such a situation where a cap point was continously mortared for the entire match. I agree with all that this type of situation should be fixed.

Shake and bake baby, I’m in

To add, an exploit I saw needs to be removed: mortarmen shouldn’t be able to target their custom markers. They should rely on their own line of sight markers or teammates.

I saw similar guy on my side. I spent whole match deconstructing his ammo cates. I earned almost 0xp but it was worth it :stuck_out_tongue:

you know that smokes already killed many computers right?

i know that many of us don’t run enlisted on a toaster. but the ammount of effect and particles included by phosphours are gonna make fps a nightmare.

not to mention, only british forces, and USA used phosphores. no germans, or russians.

We already have smoke grenades. Rare but they exist.

i know.

and guess how that ended.

every patch note there’s always something that talks about " fixes for smokes "

I just wanna do more war crimes

Grabs Flamethrower and Panzerfaust and goes in the direction of nearest enemy bunker full of infantry while laughing maniacally

Still, any improvements to mortars should be considered AFTER things that are making them too strong already are eliminated. Imagine this kind of improved mortars spamming caps… ooof
