"Heavy SMG" for assault engineers

Those who have read my previous threads have probably already noticed that I am a huge fan of the PPSh with a drum magazine.

And it’s a big disappointment to me that I can’t equip assault engineers with this.

And in general, assault rifles of all factions except Germany are some kind of dieselpunk sci-fi shame (or anachronistic retrograde WWI shame, if we are talking about Fedorovs), which makes these squads unusable for me.

There are two main arguments against simply giving Assault Engineers the damn SMGs:

  1. a WHOLE ONE squad of engineers with automatic weapons would somehow ruin the balance at
    low BRs.

  2. As the administration staff explained to me, this was done because in the Stalingrad campaign, engineers could use assault rifles but couldn’t use SMGs. To me, that argument is bullshit, and who gives a fuck who used what in a campaign that no one remembers anymore? So today we’ll only discuss the first argument.

The simplest solution is to give Assault Engineers the option to use BR4 or BR5 SMGs, but not BR1-3 SMGs.

However, the game doesn’t have a mechanic that would limit a soldier’s weapon selection not only by weapon class but also by that weapon’s battle rating. And it’s unlikely that the developers will work on creating such mechanics (although it will be useful for four squads in all factions of the game)

Therefore, I will propose the following possible solutions to this problem:

1 ) Place a phantom BR5 (or BR 4) item with in the Assault Engineer inventory. The player will not be able to remove this item or even see it in their inventory. This way, Assault Engineers will receive SMGs and will not be able to ruin the balance at low BRs.

However, this decision will prevent players from using semi-automatic and bolt-action rifles at low-mid BRs (as I do). It will also prevent players from using assault rifles from the only faction that has assault rifles at BR 2, BR 3, and BR 4. Whether this is a good or bad decision is up to you.

2 ) This is a more complex solution, as outlined in the topic title. However, it will allow assault engineers to use SMGs, allow low-tier BRs to avoid encounters with engineers armed with automatic weapons, and, most importantly, this decision does not take away existing options from players.

What’s the gist of this solution:

Assign all BR4 and BR5 SMGs a new weapon class. Let’s call it the “heavy SMG.” The heavy SMG will be available to all soldier classes that have access to regular SMGs, but it will also be available to assault engineers. There’s no need to even indicate in the user interface that it’s a different weapon class than just an SMG.

So, what’s the best way to do it?

  • Assault Engineers should not have any form of SMG.
  • Just give assault engineers the ability to use any SMG.
  • Assign BR 4 or 5 to the Assault Engineer squad itself using a phantom BR4 or 5 item in the inventory.
  • Allow Assault Engineers to use BR4 and 5 SMGs by assigning BR4 and 5 SMGs to the phantom “Heavy SMG” class.

Or you could just use assaulters. The assault engineers are only relevant to high BR (minus the Germans at BR 2) Allowing them to have SMGs at low BRs would be broken and unfair to new players. SMGs become less relevant at high BRs so it’s pointless to give them SMGs. Unnecessary and over complicated post, just leave them the way they are.

You’ve given a reason why you wouldn’t do it yourself. Now give me a reason why other players shouldn’t have this opportunity. Why should buildmaking be limited to one single “right” meta?

We need this.
If we cant have AR in TT on low br, we need some smg. :camel: :camel: :camel:

Definitely shouldn’t be able to use any form of smgs.

How is that any more unfair than running 3 assaulter squads at low BRs? If SMGs are the issue then just remove them entirely for low BRs

Reason?

The same reason why other classes such as radioman, rifleman, sniper and so on can’t use smg.

I think the reason is pretty much obvious.

But I guess we can just give smgs to everyone. Smh

However, specific engineers can use assault rifles, but cannot use submachine guns. Maybe we should take away the assault rifles too? Or should we give assault rifles to radio operators and anti-tankers?

I would gladly trade BR5 automatic rifles for BR2 or 3 SMGs.

To provide context on that, originally the legacy engineer squads obtained from Stalingrad were to retain their assault rifles after the merge update (or they were going to give all engineers the ability to use ARs, I forget which, maybe they considered both) but after running tests a lot of players didn’t like the AR spam. The other half of the players who wanted AR spam felt cheated that the devs were going back on their word on what they were going to do with engineer ARs so they created that single engineer squad with ARs to try and please both sides.

Yes, I remember the assault rifle spam at Stalingrad. It was terrible.

But now, in general, every BR5 battle looks like this.

Its 1 single squad per faction so just give them SMGs. Other premium squads already have engineers with SMGs or LMGs so whatever

I think there is some justification to give AT, Engineer, Flamethrower, Radio, and Mortar SMGs.

Its the same as when support units were issued carbines or short rifles. The smg was the ultimate PDW

I almost say those classes, including medic, should have the rifles and assault weapons

This thread is written only to allow Assault Engineers to use submachine guns. At least BR 4 and 5.

Yes they will only be the beginning :smiling_imp:

No, I would never suggest giving everyone BR5 SMGs. Maximum BR2 and 3 SMGs for BR5 specialists instead of auto rifles.
