Gun jamming mechanic

Hey all!

Back in Enlisted Alpha and Closed Beta Test times there was more focus on immersion and atmosphere, and one of the things we have lost since then is a chance that your weapon can randomly jam/require force to reload:

On the one hand, I believe it’s a shame that this animation and mechanic is wasted and no longer used at all.

On the other hand, I don’t think people should be forced to use jamming guns.

Therefore, here are a couple suggestions:

Option 1 – “Battle-worn” bolt action rifles as intermediate event weapons (instead of callsign/appearance orders/empty stage, not main rewards)

Players who choose to roleplay an unfortunate consript who was given a faulty rifle would be able to do so, others would be free to ignore this weapon and avoid using it.

Poll – should we get “battle-worn” Mosin/Kar98k/M1903/Arisaka as one of easy event rewards?

  • Yes, add as intermediate event reward
  • No

Option 2 – re-introduce the jamming mechanic in one of events such as “last ditch defence of Moscow”

Put yourself in the shoes of a German soldier freezing outside Moscow or a Soviet conscript with limited ammo whose rifles barely work and jam due to the freezing cold.

Poll – should we see rifle jamming return in one of the events?

  • Yes, hold an event with randomly jamming weapons
  • No

This mechanic would fit better in a survival game or something like active matter. But all the equipment in Enlisted is always in perfect shape as if it was cleaned just before you spawn so a jamming mechanic would just piss players off for no real gain.

However I wouldn’t mind seeing animations like that shown in the video where the soilder is struggling to load a clip as a Easter egg, but I’d want it to be really rare (like 1/10,000 reloads or something)

Great suggestion.
Though creating alternate reloads might be too much hassle, just implementing a longer animation as shown in the video would be great.

I would add that these could possibly benefit from also getting “muddy” or just “dirty” skins, similar to weapons from BF1 to show intense usage. Just changing the colour scheme of the (B) weapon variants from the Halloween events (minus the wires as well, of course) could create a much more realistic and immersive way to create variety, as well as highlight the reasons for why these weapons might “jam”.

lol fuck no.

“For an event let’s make one of the guns water board u irl every time you use it”

Fun takes priority over realism, dying because your gun jams because “muh realism” does not sound fun

In the main game, this mechanic would be highly questionable. We need a second Enlisted client —Enlisted Classic, that will have all goods that were taken away from us and will not have all the batshit the addition of which has been ruining the game all these years. This mechanic will look great there.

That’s why I said I don’t want to force anyone to use jamming guns, indeed.

People who don’t want a challenge would not have to use such event weapons, for instance.

Gun jamming only happens when you treat your gun like trash - or well when a gun didn’t work properly to begin with. I dont see how you could get your bolt action to jam unless you break it.

A jamming mechanic realistically would only really effect prototype premium and event weapons and some select fire guns.

There are many factors, starting from inexperienced 18 year old consripts to freezing cold and stiff fingers or plain design flaws of the bolt/feeding system.

Personally I just like these little references, easter eggs and immersive variety, like the random Garand Thumb reload in BFV:

However, once again, neither of my suggestions is aimed at forcing everyone to experience such inconveniences in the main matchmaker.

This all ready happens to me because I play on USA servers and I’m Australian so my gun’s glitch all the time and doesn’t fire.

well, not many people wants it in the base game.

and when i request for this feature to come back for mods,

it was outright denied on behalf of @james_groove

because as he explained, each weapons would require tons of new animations for each gun, and worse,

apparently it’s old code not compatible with new enlisted.

so unfortunately, another alpha mechanic being scrapped.

Well, once again, I don’t want to force people to use faulty guns in the main gamemode, but personally I’d take those Alpha/CBT jamming bolt actions as unique and easy-to-get event weapons.

This is sad indeed.

The real battlefiled is complex
Maybe you have just crawled across a mud field or stream and gotta launched an attack on the enemy, and you will damn the designer didn’t have a dust cover on your gun.
Weapons need to be repeatedly tested and modified before they can be put into use, I bet most of the rare experimental guns in game all have their own unknown issue.

lol yeah this is the dumbest suggestion.

You did read the part where it says you wouldn’t be forced to use jamming weapons, correct?

I remember there was some kind of jamming setting in the mods editor. does anyone know how to make rifles have that jamming in mods?

oh… erika answered it…

Just don’t put this in the regular game modes, spare us the frustration and stop torturing players.
This thing is just annoying for us and ruins the loot pool. We already have to put up with the garbage Liberator; we don’t need another debuffed gun.
It might be okay if it’s only in a small event, though. The winter Moscow scene you mentioned sounds interesting.

If you guys want to know how this would feel in the game, just look at the existing random TNT duds that don’t explode. Anyone would get pissed off if they add this.

I did. But in that regard, I find it dumb because the devs would end up putting in a ton of work for something that would only be temporary.

That has been a major gripe concerning past events. There has just been so much wasted energy.

And honestly, I do appreciate your love for realism. But I am conflicted because I also know that too much realism is just lame.

Forgive me for being crass.

My point is that this was coded before.
So this feature is supposedly there, just disabled.

Tracking. Enabling this old feature and making an event out of it would certainly be efficient on their part.

And it’s not really saying much but it would definitely be more enjoyable than a gun game or more zombies.

So yeah I still hate it but maybe it’s not so dumb after all.
