Give some counterplay to mortar

I just realized that we can see arty before it comes or tanks should have clear visibility so you can spot them, meanwhile mortar doesn’t have those issues: you can sit in some close position and no one ever will spot you from 200 meters from point.

Can we have some either mortar squad highlight for enemies to make some counter play, or show zone of falling shells so people will be able to react(but just for enemies, to prevent mortar from using it for targeting).

What community thinks about, do we need it?

Guerillas and snipers are your counterplay. Use them properly.

You can also use plane bombs or call artillery on them. They can’t shoot their mortars underneath a roof for cover after all.

If you refuse to do any of those. Then stay indoors. Artillery and Mortars can’t get you in there.

Look at that, already plenty of counterplay.

The fact that mortars require either “game sense”(/skill), friendly marks, or a enemy team who can’t flank, this is fair.

You are playing a blind cripple who can’t move whilst shooting, there’s a delay for your shots(/shells) to land, and you have to stay in the open to even do your thing, and you must have used one of your squad slots to even have a mortar squad in your line-up (it’s super situational, so rarely worth it unless you have ones to spare). You make a loud sound every time you fire, which enemies (such as guerillas) can use to track you down from very far away (the sound radius is longer than a rally’s, and much easier to track down).

The only “counterplay” I would consider adding on top of everything else is some form of counter-barrage ability for enemy mortar squads to get your rough location every time you fire. How that would work I don’t know exactly, because we don’t want to make it a hard counter, because that’ll just kill mortar squads as a viable part in your line-up.

Well… I agree that getting hit by mortars coming from somewhere you can’t even see is annoying, but… there was no counter-battery radar during World War II.

For mortars, it all started in the 90’s with a commercial whose script went;
“Head on, apply directly to forehead”
“Head on, apply directly to forehead”
“Head on, apply directly to forehead”

Ever since then, my fate was sealed. I write HEAD ON on every mortar shell.

But in seriousness, the comms in Enlisted is limited, but when I play as a mortar squad, I see where my allies have marked enemy movements & especially tanks. It’s the MOST communication I get from my team. When I’m firing mortars, so many more allies mark where enemies are. They hope for support and I sends it.

If you try mortars in the practice zone, you’ll see that they’re wildly inaccurate. It’s a crapshoot everytime. I also love the fact that I can send out smoke shells about 30m away from the point, to give my brothers some protection from distant campers.

In truth, with 2 mortarmen & 1 engineer for 3 ammo boxes, (about 50 shells) I only get about 10-18 kills. It’s not a major detractor for the other team, but it puts the fear of HEAD ON on their minds.

In the brilliant WW II film - The Thin Red Line - General Nick Nolte describes it best “artillery won’t hit too much, but it sure bucks the man up”. It’s a morale booster.

Head-on. Apply directly to the forehead.

I’d be ok with mortar hits showing up as small circles on the map AS THEY HIT, not some kind of warning zone that stays up for seconds, but .5 second small blips as they explode. Wouldn’t necessarily help the enemy team, since unlike artillery you can re-aim between shots, pause and resume at will, etc, so it’s not as predictable, but at least you’d get some clue that some mortarman is out there.

Also it would clue your teammates in to the fact that you’re shelling, and maybe prompt them to mark more.

Oh, I like that, that’s a cool idea.

Maybe that marker starts out wide, then slowly becomes more precise until the shell actually lands…? Indicating a rough estimate of time until drop.

Too bad they are so far back in the greyzone you can’t even reach them.

I really couldn’t care less though… but that and neither the sniper is an effective method of combating them… sniper? seriously? How do you shoot what you can’t see? Any person with half a brain would be behind cover and out of reach of the enemy.

There is no counterplay to a mortar… you simply have to accept that it’s going to happen… they are a class designed to sit in the back lines where even the class which are designed to reach people in there can’t even do that.

And dedicating effort to try and deal with them is wasted time as you are leaving the objective.

Good luck on finding them hiding in grey zone where artillery can’t reach. They can just hide behind a wall and you can’t even spot them with sniper. It is possible for you to use guerilla to try and find it but it is a situational squad that not everyone brings it in the first place. Moreover every thing should have multiple ways to counter it not just one.

Not all objective have indoor.

So you’ve never been wide-flanked or tower-sniped before? Guess you’re one of the players that never bothers to check upwards?
Elevation does wonders for making targets you can’t see visible.

Also for those that put down money, there’s paratroopers.
Mortar boys are very counterable. You’re just refusing to play the counters.

You wanna talk about something with no counterplay? Jets. The only thing that counters a jet is another jet. Engies AA is not sufficient and only works if you get lucky.

Google “indirect fire position” to understand what does it mean.

Don’t work if you put fire position in grey zone.

Skill issue.

I see you can’t read.
Google “ELEVATION” to understand what it means

To add to your point, mortars are very loud when they’re firing. As someone who frequently runs a guerilla squad, they’re very easy to track down and slaughter while they sit bunched up in a field.

I also don’t think they are useless. You can cause a lot of trouble shelling the approaches to a capture point or just flattening a point if its in the open.

No, because i don’t use mortars… and if i did i would make sure i couldn’t be killed.

So good on a map that has none huh?

That is the only time i will use mortars.

Like i said if the player knows what he’s doing they’re basically invulnerable.

lol.

Underpowered unused squad and u wanna nerf it?

Don’t confuse underpower with situationality.

thats not even a word son

Since artillery and bombing runs give everyone a red circle on the map, incoming mortar shells should give something similar too.

While mortars are weak, putting something on the map would arguably improve their area-denial power by making players avoid those spots more reliably.
