There is currently no reason at all to use a basic knife over the axe as a melee weapon. The axe is able to kill with fewer hits and is able to charge like a bayonet rifle while the standard knife cant do anything besides poke people to death.
I propose that all standard knives have a small sprint speed boost. The sprint factor should be between 105% - 115% for all standard issue knives. Officer swords, by comparison, have a sprint factor of 150%.
This would give players a reason to use a knife over the axe as a melee weapon, as it would offer extra versatility in exchange for less combat power. Officer swords would still be the best choice as they offer unmatched speed benefits.
Overall, this would make the player choice for melee weapons more thoughtful (in the absence of swords) than just automatically equipping the axe because it can charge.

Yeah gotta add some gamification to these knives or whats the point using them. I use bayonets, or scavange guns before i have to resort to axe or knife. And… Lets hope our resident negative nancy doesnt pop up! ;p
It’s also a bit weird that the Japanese can have 150% spring factor on literally every single soldier and no one else can. A slight boost for knives would at least help
So, I voted no.
The basic knife is just that, basic. Yeah, Japan gets swords for everyone, and yeah, everyone else needs to event/silver box to get them or buy axes to get the charge boost. Something somewhere is imbalanced, but giving every basic knife in the game an insignificant sprint factor buff ain’t the balance.
Personally, I’d be in favor of sprint factor being tied to total weight carried, or removing non-perk modifiers to it entirely, because in a game of standing on (small) circles, whichever team moves the fastest and secures the flanks best is going to win. Excess mobility is OP.

The idea of pulling out a melee weapon to run faster is dumb as hell, I’d rather see it removed than expanded.

I think a 110% sprint boost for equipping the basic knife is fair, your soldier is stowing their primary weapon so they should be able to run a bit faster, but not by a lot.
