Unlike in other countries, Japan’s tree does not include BR 4 and 5 mortars. However, this is not because they did not exist in reality; 80mm-class mortars do exist, just as they do in other countries.
The Type 99 Light Mortar is a small, lightweight mortar with an 81mm caliber that was developed as an infantry assault weapon and as an artillery piece for airborne units; it is capable of firing Type 100 high-explosive shells.
Records show that 598 units were actually manufactured, so this is not a request to add a fictional one.
This proposal isn’t about how adding this feature would work or what impact it would have; it stems from a small question regarding the fact that this structure exists in other countries but not in Japan. Of course, there are strengths that Japan has that other countries don’t, but people who think that justifies the current situation probably aren’t even participating in this forum in the first place. Please cast your vote and lend your support so that we can move, even if only gradually, toward greater fairness.
I also like the Type 97, but it’s likely the reason OP decided on the Type 99 was due to size and weight. The Type 97 weighs ~66kg and has a 115cm barrel, making it require a small team to deploy. The Type 99 fires identical shells, but from a short 55cm barrel and only weighs ~24kg.
Either option would be great though!
edit: I just used Google translate on the comment above me and it’s exactly what I thought.
80mm mortars are for penning tanks… if it’s only shell is an high explosive then no… unless that’s what all the other ones use but they have terrible performance against infantry… i wouldn’t assume this would be the case with this, because japan.
Also, 80mm mortars suck ass… as said above their primary use is for killing tanks in which case you need to rely on your teammates to have marked them and them being braindead and being completely still, and that’s if they aren’t in the greyzone so far that you can’t even reach them… i’m not interested in any attention being given to them, they are simply a gimmick.
They need to finally go down in BR, and the Allies and hte Japanese need to finally get their own ones (Like its really not fucking hard at this point.)
I suppose if they go down in BR then it’s acceptable… either way they barely work as they are intended to be used, and no i don’t have enough experience to really say that but i do know the tanker has to be spotted by team and also braindead to get killed by it.
There is no reason for either nation to get one, they are lackluster and irrelevant… but perhaps if they go down to 3 then they’d atleast have some use.
Still, I’m against anything being added or adjusted to classes dedicated to staying off point like snipers or mortars… which atleast the benefit of a good mortar player is that they can do some damage when used right but 80mm ones just suck… so rather not add new ones at all… especially if this one will be better against infantry unlike all the other ones.
Would be pretty imbalanced… but its ok because its for japan though right?
I’ve stated multiple reason why they are ineffective for their intended purpose, and i also question your motives for the team if you are sitting in mortar squad.
it’s purely situative squad for wiping troops when there is no roofs + destroying tanks if we don’t have a good tanks on our side.
I have decent positional orientation in my head, so I can quickly create firewall between point and enemy spawn and it’s much more accurate than arty + with two engineers in mortar squad I can do it for VERY long time.
Also do you know that you can build 3 ammo packs in front of your mortar guy and he can reload his shells amount even without leaving shooting position?
