While the Thompson’s large drum magazines seem awesome and imposing, in war they proved to be cumbersome and unwieldy and they were quickly superceded by stick magazines. Everyone knows the Thompson’s iconic 30 round magazines, but there was a smaller 20 round magazine. The 20 round “XX” magazine was the first stick magazine. During America’s early entrance into the war the “XX” was the standard Thompson magazine with millions made. Later in 1942 the 30 round “XXX” magazine was introduced because it was felt 20 rounds was too little. The XX magazine was most common on the M1928A1 Thompsons but they were compatible with M1 and M1A1 Thompsons and continued to see use.
I am suggesting that 20 round variants of the M1928A1, M1, and M1A1 Thompsons be added to the Allies Research Tree. For history and variety!
