Voice lines - a required fix, tweaks, and various additions

so, i’ll start saying that, i’m sorry, but i’m sure some sound modder will hate me for this, but it’s long overdue and needed.

anyway, i’ll cut straight to the points. in this thread i want to cover voice lines in particular, and how are structured. for so long they have remained in the same state and simply isn’t working.

it probably requires alot of work that i’m not sure devs will actually even consider.
but it’s worthed a shot i guess. also, of course, not really a priority.
just something down the line to polish.

i’ll start right away:

fixes

fix voice lines inconsistencies among factions

i’m not sure how no one noticed when the voice lines were being compiled but there are some inconsistencies that are glaring and creates alot of issues like some ( such as @Veekay45 ) had to experience first hand.

soviets and italian charge voice lines being in the same path, with jut a different pitch intonation

i’m sure in the heated moment or to get the job done faster and cheaper, was adopted to reuse the same voice lines just link it under the same file, add a pitch, and call it a day.

same with the german bayonet charges being used for the second in command british AI soldiers.

or, how the american player voice lines magically shift to literally another person when capturing an objective or reloading using the vcs from the second in command AI.

it’s just inconsistent, and overhaul bad.

fix US main charge & and Japan Main Charge voice lines quality audio

like seriously. those sounds like the VA was inside a box.
i can’t tell if it was an attempt to be some sort of " realistic " voice lines as you, the player are charing, or some effed up render voice lines.

because either way, it only happens for those voice lines and not all the others. making it weird.

tweaks and changes needed

when it comes to tweaks neededs, i mean major overhauls.

so… as we see, it’s always refreshing and nice to see that developers tries to make the game as much realistic as possible ( not historical, don’t twist my words, and do not start with the whole shenanigans ) like adding decals shells on surfaces of tanks, effects, animations, and many other to make the overhaul game more realistic.

but it’s about time for the voice lines to step up and be realistic too.
and not some cheesy knock off cod lines that are truly bad and lowers the quality of the game.

i’ll might be speaking from my own :peach: here, and i’ll admit.

but i’m fairly confident that soldiers don’t go around yelling at the enemy with dumb lines like " it was too easy " or " just do us a favor and kys for both of us "

like. no chance in hell.

or… magically the fighter pilot in his cockpit talking shit all by himself.

so, the major things that are needed are:

  • more gritty voice lines intonations

and no. " kompfshoen ha ha " it’s just tasteless and immersion breaking.

what i’m talking about, perfect examples of voice lines done right, are the following:

like, more realistic interactions within each other where you can tell emotions and not being cheesy all around. those can be witty, but not to the point of being dumb and kid playground ( like enlisted ). as well as actual accents being present and distinguishable. not some soulless reader.

  • add more voice lines playing in specific scenarions and reactions

for example, when a soldiers nearby dies, there should be a voice lines of a squad mate or soldier nearby at least aknowledging that and say " they got hans " or " man down " and so on.

  • better squad interactions and outloud say that they are doing.

what i mean by this, is that often times there isn’t a sense of squad or union with your own AI. they are just souless followers.

they should, instead, act and work as a squad.

so, for example, when the AI is going to cover or is being fired upon, he should say just that.
similar to coh2/3.

if my AI is engaging or sees an enemy, he should say that using various vcs and from the cues says where the enemy is. ( for example, enemies to the north etc ) other than saying " enemy there " to little help.

as well as when a player is chucking a grenade, the soldier should say so the moment he is switching to the grenade. ( would be vital for lone fighter too since tk is a thing. and i would like to know if the freak behind me is cooking a grenade so i can stay clear of him and not block his throw ) or even when the ai/player are planting a bomb ,they should say " cover me, i’m planting a bomb " or " cover me, i’m defusing ) and so on.

audio is everything. both for a gameplay stand point and immersion

  • replace every single killing voice lines for all factions

legit, what waters down the whole experience.
and instead, use proper communication like " yeah, he is down ". or like, " did i got him ? " when the enemy goes down. even just " target eliminated " or even " enemy down ".

because i cannot stand these sorry poor of an excuse of soldiers voice lines " h e- y o u ’ r e n o t g e t t i n g a w a y " not very funny if you ask practically anyone.

  • ( optional ) implement a banther system

one of my favorite feature of insurgency sandstorm, is the banther / intimidation feature.
and that is, works similar to the war cry of enlisted. except the enemy will react to it.
meaning that they will talk to each other or be aware of the enemy presence. this only works on AI. unless the player actively partecipated in it.

it’s used to give away the enemy position as well as yours / the user that uses such function.
the idea is for close quarters

  • ( optional ) add reactions to grenades or explosions going off

the " grenade " voice line by AI are fine, but it would be much better if only few calls the grenade and the others react to the grenade. ovviously, not everytime, just some time.

i doubt i as much to the next person would remain stoic to an explosion going off 20 meters from me.
like, even just a gasph.

and to conclude this suggestion ( or rather, far dream )

Allow voice modding to be integrated with mods and allow modders to create new voice lines instead of having to replace existing ones

so… the problems that some modders have, ( me in particular ) is that, i have custom voice lines for my mods that are specific, but are a pain in the :peach: for both me, and the averange user to play specific mods.

what i mean by it, is that i cannot use new voice lines without replacing new ones.
which it’s borderline problematic as it interferes with the base voice lines.

so, it would be much better if modders could create separate voice lines packs to integrate with their own mods without the need of replacing default voice lines.

i’m not sure if it’s clear, but once again, it’s unpractical having to force players to download mod sounds for our mods that could potentially interfere and sink a huge time for both the players and the modders to load and unload each time.

it would be best if we could integrate mods by simply adding an editor node and link the mod over the portal, or… be able to include separate pack.

like, assign voice lines for specific squad or faction.

in conclusion

that’s all from me.
quite possible. i’ll probably die of age before seeing any of this stuff happeneing, but it would be cool to have it for future generations i guess.

anyway, if you have anything useful to add or that you want to see, let me know, and i’ll might include it.

thanks for reading and have a nice day.

Good points. Fully agree.

Interesting, didn’t know that.

One thing I would add to the requests is enemy-specific voicelines.
Like the German sound bank would have files like enemy_spotted_russian.wav which would be activated when the map loaded is on the Eastern front, making the Germans shout “kommunisten” and “sowjetische truppen”.
And enemy_spotted_american.wav for Normandy and such, to shout “amerikaner”.

Interestingly enough, about 50% of sound files already present in bank files are not used/programmed/linked in the game right now.

Enemy tank spotted, enemy troops left/right, let’s dismantle this – all of those exist but aren’t used for some reason.

Right now a soldier gets 2 sets of voicelines - 1 as a bot and other when controlled by player.
Personally, I would have preferred a system where one can set voice for every soldier.

Another issue for me is that there is only one single voiceline for scoring headshot, which gets repetitive very quickly, wish there were at least 3 like for “hit enemy from a far”.

well, yeah i know vcs for each faction have 4 vcs-

1 player plus the 3 AI

and i would have liked an individual system to select voice lines, and hopefully bank on it like chivalry 2, or world war 3 ( the game ) did with having different and selectable voice lines in the customizable screen.

would prolly be even better for aussie vcs and others… but yeah
problem is, i believe that’s insane huge ammount of work for something that i’m not sure they can… or even will do.

that’s sort of my fear.

true

as usual your post points to something who we need :>
