The effective range of buckshot (which is what most shotguns use in war) is 60 meters and shorter with it still being able to one shot people the max range you can expect to get a hit is 80 meters. The shotguns should deal a lot of damage unless the hit armor i.e. helmets which then depending on the gun and range might not make it through the helmet and therefore not causing damage

I have never used a shotgun in this game or sandstorm.
I would like to use it if I could carry it as a secondary weapon, but if I had to choose between it and a backpack, I would choose the backpack.

They should be equal in capabilities to SMGs, so that way you have to make choices whether to bring a shotgun or an SMG.
For example, shotguns have an insane amount of firepower, but lower ROF, long reload times, limited range. So I agree, they should be buffed in some way, but do so carefully.
Right now, there’s no choice between the two, the SMG pretty much always wins with the exception of the Auto 5. The US also had an impressive and unique shotgun arsenal that would be awesome to have in game.
Personally I like using the shotguns in Enlisted a lot. I really wish they would let them be used on engineers.
That said, I think they are fine as they are. They aren’t intended to be used at longer ranges, that is what your bolt-actions are for. However, they give a bit more leniency on medium and short ranges, which works well.
