Serious Question: How many people use the ENGINEER and MORTAR squads?

Please keep this discussion on topic guys. Just answer the questions, leave a comment at the end if you wish, but don’t sit and debate on this thread please. I’m trying to collect information for suggestion posts and really don’t want to have to dig through a bunch of extra chatter. Thank you in advance.

  1. How often do you use Engineer squads?

  2. How do you use Engineer squads? (Setting up large defenses or just ammo/rallies)
2.5. Do you find the DEFENSIVE structures (Sandbag walls, barbwire, Czech Hedgehogs) built by engineers to be adequate in the roles they are SUPPOSED to be used in? (Using Czech Hedehogs to block doorways is not included as its more of an exploit.)

  3. How often do you use the AT field guns and AAs?

  4. How often do you use the Mortar squads?

  5. How often do you see other people using the mortar squads?

  6. Do you find that mortar squads are used more on offense or defense?

  7. Do you find mortar squads to be very effective?

mortar squads are useless never see them getting used and never use them engineer squads are actually viable cuz of the at gun and aa guns they can build other then that they have no use

i do use every squad type everyday since alpha 2020.
5400 batles +/- and counting.

not only squads but i play all campaigns and all sides.

1- every match since i have atleast 1 eng squad equiped on all sides.
2-90% time to make ammo for myself since i tend to survive more than my ammo count . i only make spawnpoints when i cant reach the objective faster first.
3- once every full moon. a tnt pack, tank or plane will deal with it faster and better in my opinion.
on lonefighters - ALOT.
4-almost everyday now since paratroopers the option to bring eng will bring 2 paras with extra ammo on mortars.
5-once every 10 games i would say
6- on open objective maps, usually atacking. since you know there will be someone or AI soldier inside the open point. some maps are not effective to use a mortar squad.
7- yes, when used on the right maps on the right scenarios. Paratroopers gave me a good excusse to use it even more.

I use the engineer squad in every battle, they are a staple of my loadout.
I use the mortar squad when I feel like meeming.

  1. Rarely
  2. I use them to quickly build rallies, ammo boxes, sand bags, mg nests. If I have time I also lay down some mines.
2.5 Defensive structures are generally a little weak, but do function in their role.
  3. I have used AT guns a lot recently because explosion packs and launchers are unreliable. I use AA guns all the time.
  4. Almost never, only if I am playing stalingrad.
  5. Sometimes, maybe 25% of games.
  6. Way better offensively
  7. No, not unless you are tank-hunting with the big mortars or attacking specific objectives on specific maps.

I always use engineer squads in stalingrad(For MKB42 and AVT40). Other campaigns, never.
Mortars are always between useless and OP. The frustration being killed by an enemy two buildings behind is too strong.

  1. Very often, I use 2 engineer squads on almost all campaigns.

  2. Ammo/Rallies, sometimes sandbags/mg nests.

  3. Not very often, mostly if there’s a tank I can’t reach or if I don’t have an explosive pack then I build AT guns, it’s fun on Berlin.

  4. The squads themselves? Never. But with paratroopers yes.

  5. Not often, every 6/7 matches.

6 & 7. Not on defense, on attack it depends on the point, in an open cap then mortars are extremely effective but if it’s a cap with a lot of cover then they lose their effectiveness. Very situational weapon.

  1. Engineer is one my 6 default squads taken into battle in every campaign, with exception when a premium squad can replace the engineer.

  2. Rallies, ammo, sometimes barbed wire, MG nest, AT gun + AA cannon.

    • Yes
  3. AT field gun - rarely. AA cannon - sometimes.

  4. Only in Berlin.

  5. Very often.

  6. No difference.

  7. Yes, in some campaigns they can replace AT squad.

  • How often do you use Engineer squads?
    Every Match

  • How do you use Engineer squads? (Setting up large defenses or just ammo/rallies)
Generally, Defensive early game (setting up ammo, rallies, barricades, etc), then transition to offensive once defenses are established

  • Do you find the DEFENSIVE structures (Sandbag walls, barbwire, Czech Hedgehogs) built by engineers to be adequate in the roles they are SUPPOSED to be used in? (Using Czech Hedehogs to block doorways is not included as its more of an exploit.)
Czech - 10/10 effective in just about every situation if placed well
Sandbags - 7/10 Effective to stop small arms fire, lacks durability and build choices (Windows, stacks, etc)
Barbwire - 4/10 Effective in very niche situations such as locking down trenches and doorways very well but severely lacks durability

  • How often do you use the AT field guns and AAs?
Most games if needed. AA, although in a rough spot right now still can do good damage and at least puts pressure on the pilots when they go to bomb. AT guns have gotten much better over the patches making it easier to deal with grey zone tanks.

  • How often do you use the Mortar squads?
Not often but I like to fit them in when I have to space.

  • How often do you see other people using the mortar squads?
    Quite rarely.

  • Do you find that mortar squads are used more on offense or defense?
Generally used offensively but have seen its uses for defense with an organized team to squash rallies within the grey area.

  • Do you find mortar squads to be very effective?
In a coordinated team that pings often, or if you can use binoculars effectively.

I use both all the time.

Engineer structures are only useful against AI and that’s not much. Hedgehog is good at times but that’s rare.

Mortar is useless unless dev allow us to arrange squad after map selection
having one for indoor map is not fun

  1. Only while they are grinded out.
  2. No way. The engineer OP is because of the rally, the engineer squad is useless. I think anyone who thinks that obstacles win defensive battles is wrong. There are such people, it’s their business if they want to play minecraft. But the defense system is not worth much if there is no one to protect it. I prefer to work so that the enemy does not reach the cap point, I think it is more effective.
  3. Also rare. While you’re having fun with these, you’re not in the battle. If you’re not surrounded by brain dead people, it’s fine, if you have to carry the team on your back, it’s a luxury to mess with them. The tanks and planes keep coming, you shoot down one plane and the next one comes after 1 minute. Tanks are similar. Taking them out and shooting them is not as valuable as I think it should be. Most pilots or tank drivers are retarded anyway. Either they crash, or the tank rushes forward like Rambo into the enemy infantry, which of course ends in death in the short term. If someone has a mind and can use it, he deserves life, or that we fight a good dogfight, or a tank duel.
  4. Only as long as they are grinded out. As long as you could spam, they were useful. Not today.
  5. It’s very rare, even the worst enlisted player will soon realize that he will have more kills with a sniper squad.
  6. In the past, it only made sense in an attack, because I know that there is definitely an enemy at the cap point, or that reinforcements are running. In defense, they break into the defense from too many directions, and if they are at the cap point, it has been bad for a long time.
  7. No.
  • How often do you use Engineer squads?

Engineer?

i always have engineer squad in loadout if i have tank in case i need AA. but cause of shitty AA idk if there is a need for them. i can do most of the building with standard engineer from other squads.

mortars are pretty squad that is only good at specific situations. e.g. when you are attacker and defenders need to defend open point. spawning and sending few mortar shells at cap can yield some ridiculous multi kills

1-5 rating with 1 next to never and 5 every time

  1. 4
  2. 2, 2.5 3
  3. 3
  4. 1
  5. 1
  6. Defense
  7. 3 (Depends)
  1. Often. I would use them all the time but don’t, because I’m too cheap to buy more squad slots and I’d rather bring those squads, that I need to level up.
  2. Mostly for rallies. I place sandbags around exposed rallies and barbed wire in key areas, when I think I have the time.
2.5 Mixed bag. Sandbags are quick enough to set up and have enough HP, but they need more versatility (different shapes). Most of the time it’s better to play the objective, than to set them up. Barbed wire is very good, at least indoors. Gets blown up too easily by bombardment, though. Czech Hedgehogs take too long to block any except the most narrow roads. And 75mm cannons can destroy them. They should be immune to fire from tanks. I use them very rarely.
  3. Sometimes, when I have the time and can find a safe position. I would use AT more often, if there were bigger guns available.
  4. I level them up and then never use them again. (I haven’t unlocked the big mortars yet, though.)
  5. Rarely. I sometimes hear them shooting, but I rarely notice the impacts.
  6. Can’t tell. I use them equally in both.
  7. Very effective against bots and on certain maps, but not overall.
They are also surprisingly effective, if you can encourage your team to mark enemy infantry for you.

1: Engineer Squad is My Number 1 squad in every campaign. First to be best equipped and most used. Most of them can be equipped with 2 AT soldiers aswell. If there was a Tally, Engineer squads would be responsible for the majority of my kills. And because they can all build, one does not need Large Ammo pouches, can use Large backpacks or grenade pouches. Truly the Jack of All trades.

2: I use Engineers like any squad, combat focused. Only difference Is they are 100% flexible. Rally or ammo? no problem. Clear obstacles in doors or obstruct them? No problem, tank or plane bothering you? no problem.

  • barb wire = very useful
  • sand bag = too sensitive to AoE explosions (arty and bombs)
  • Hedge hogs, I use them in access ways. It might be frowned on, buts its not an exploit as game mechanics allow it and they have made no effort to block it (Nor have I seen them comment on it and its been around forever). Also the concept is Barricading an entrance, Doesn’t matter what you block it with, as long as it blocks it. Id use sandbags if they didnt fall over from someone farting in their general direction.

3: As often as a tank or plane gives me enough cause to do so…usually if they are proving too big an obstacle for my team mates to go around and actually come help me at the objective.

4: Mortar squads are in all my Decks, and are My first spawn when Attacking if the map is suitable (there are quite a few maps that are). Some maps they are my first spawn on defense too.

5: I see them around quite a bit, not in an effective capacity though.

6: Mostly offense…occasionally on defense when you know where enemy rallies are.

7: Not as effective as they used to be (need buff). Some maps as first spawn on Attack they can give you the advantage off the bat

Quite useless squad atm due to fact that AA is yet again broken
berlin & fg being exception

AT gun isnt very effective against stalinium so rather rarely
AA when it works.

never.

  1. Depends on the campaign, but 70% of the time i rock a squad.

  2. Spawn, ammo and other defensive structures situationally.

2.5

  • Sandbags: They are generally useful, adds lifetime to spawns and helps to protect against fire. Also makes entry more difficult. Fine as is.

  • Hedgehogs: Highly situational, I rarely build them.

  • Barbed wire: Situational, sometimes it makes caps absolute hell to enter and other times it is really pointless. Maybe a bit too fragile against bombs and artillery (but det packs are fine to destroy it)

  1. I don’t use AAs anymore since the latest “update”. ATs sometimes, but quite uncommon.

  2. Almost never.

  3. Rarely.

  4. 50/50, there are maps where they are more common (eg. Kafir cave) where it’s likely that there are open caps.

  5. No, it requires a lot of set up effort and map knowledge / skill to use. Mortar should be more powerful than it is now. Seems not really worth it vs. Arty.

It is a hard requirement to take an engineer in normandy to deal with all the flying rats since planes are like flying boats with marshmallow guns, dependends how much time i have, sometimes you just need a hedgehog to block a road or bridge and sometimes you really need something to just reach out and touch a bitch on a HMG 400m away and you rifle isn’t doing it, this is all normandy though, buildables in the Pacific are worthless because there’s nowhere flat to put them so they have an effective range as far as you could have thrown them.
No sandbags do basically nothing for cover and hedgehogs can just be disassembled like it’s kinder egg toy.
Mortars only get used in the Pacific or normandy on paratroopers because they’re both free and are the only option with an engineer, stalingrad, berlin are too cluttered and moscow, tunisia are too open to hit anything.
