guadalcanal campaign can be seperated to two parts ( historically speaking not gameplay)
1-first succesfull attack and capture of island by us
2- japanese counter attacks until february 1943 (infamous tokyo express)
currently, all maps we have are from first attack (tenaur reiver, alligator creek, gavutu)
dont get me wrong, i like to see more unknown battles represented in mainstream media.
But these were not the most significant battles happened in guadalcanal.
One of the criticism about pacific maps (very rightfully) was lack of jungle terrain.
Its true that first skirmishes happened near beaches as we currently have but biggest and blodiest ones happened inland.
After japanese destroyed first american fleet and sent troops to retake the island
For example why we dont have edsons ridge, matanikau river, henderson field or mount austen ?
Pacific just needs more maps in general for how large of a theater it was. It was kind of a letdown since they advertised it as having a bunch of maps before it released.
Just papua island itself + solomons is nearly 800 k km square. And whole island saw some skirmishes here and there.
I still dont know why everbody just want to see iwo jima or okinawa immediately.
I prefer to see southwest pacific
Too many potential maps
And generally underrepresented in mainstream media
Also opens possibility of british/commonwealth-japanese matches . Since they really fought there side by side with americans.
The first WW2 game I played was Battlefield1942. I was excited to be able to participate in the battle on the famous island of Guadalcanal, but it was a minimalist island that could be traversed from the west end to the east end in about 5 minutes. The outline of the island is a replica of reality, but it is much smaller than the real island.
Sadly, this is probably a necessity when designing a map for a video game.
Military video games, not limited to the Battlefield series, generally scale their maps to recreate historical maps, and Enlisted is no exception.
Take the island of Guadalcanal, for example. The real island of Guadalcanal is 160 km long from east to west, while the island in the game is probably only 16 km long. (I haven’t measured it properly, but I have a feeling in editor.)
(Comparing the topography of the real map with that of the game map, it is clear that the scale of the buildings is larger in the game. In other words, the islands are smaller.)
The smaller scale of the island compared to the player means that a vast promontory becomes a mere rocky outcrop, and a vast hilly area becomes a small hill for the Boy Scouts to climb. I think this is what makes players feel that the island is different from the Guadalcanal they have seen in recorded images and movies.
The map proposed by Mergenthewise and the photos posted are very attractive, but I wonder to what extent these historical battles can be recreated on the island of Guadalcanal in the game.
The areas that are not used now are empty, just a few miscellaneous trees, so at the very least they need to be reworked when a new map is released, but the more important issue is still the scale.
Suppose there was a battle where Marines had to make huge sacrifices to cross a river. Or the blood spilled to dominate a hilly terrain. If the terrain were miniature, the player would cross the river and climb the hill in a minute without experiencing their hardship. In order to make interesting battles that take place on an island of a different scale than reality, map designers will be forced to be inventive away from the historical facts. Will the resulting product be satisfactory to those who desire a “historical battle”?
In my opinion, we should stop including the entire island of Guadalcanal in one map. During the game, players are not allowed to enter outside the combat area, so it is of little concern to them whether the entire island is recreated in the game or not.
Divide the island into several areas and recreate them as individual maps on a larger scale.
They’re just meant to look like the real counterpart, but for gameplay reasons they aren’t replicas. Which is fine for me personally, I think the current maps do give a good feel of the battlefield, we just need more.
I just want more in general. Iwo Jima, Philippines (both Luzon and Manila for jungle and urban fighting, respectively) more Guadalcanal, Peleliu and Bougainville would be my guess.
I think the new Pacific map we’re allegedly getting in the new update will be either Iwo Jima or Peleliu since I think they want to start with the most popular battles and then move on to other underrepresented ones. And most people know those ones from The Pacific already.
Its better choice.
But im not sure will they repressent japanese tunnels and underground complexes with current horrible ai pathfinding.
Because it was kahif village x100
We also dont have a real landing mission.
Even a huge armored battle in tunisia.
Every map every mission is fixed in 6-2-2 structure, we cannot find any effort to make unique, costomized missions of each campaign.
Some buildings in Berlin and Stalingrad look exactly like those seen in historical photos. However, we do not know if all the layout of the towns is the same as in reality.
