Remove ammo refill for mortars

Screenshot (97)_LI

Mortars are annoying, they only camp and bomb the cap zone. They are annoying for both enemies and friendlies. For enemies, they are unreachable and impossible to kill because you cant go to their spawn to kill them. For friendlies, they dont capture zones, help teammates or hold positions.

Ability for ammo refill for mortars must be removed. Also the Mortar squad shouldnt have 4 mortars in it. Its dumb, unrealistic and annoying.

I think removing the engineer from the squad would be enough. It then requires teamwork to have ammo for it.

Also if you can kill them, they arent an issue. But to kill them, they can’t be inside their spawn, firing away safely. So i think that still is the priority

You got a point but even if they remove the engineer, some people will party up and convince their party friends to build ammo boxes for them

Why are mortars a thing at all? We already have call-in artillery which fills the same role and is overall less cancerous.

Shouldnt teamwork be rewarded, though?

Mortars are unique, i don’t think they should be removed but balanced. I think a better solution is finally introducing large maps. Artillery howitzers could be used by actual players and mortars need to come close to reach the target making them much more fragile to enemy fire. Just introducing large scale open field maps will automatically fix most of the issues and make eastern front 10 times more enjoyable. Games will have more space and battles will be exciting. Submachine gun meta will disappear and personel carriers will have more use. They kinda did this to Normandy and can do to Moscow too. With open maps, howitzers, APC’s and actually usable trenches will make us feel the eastern front much more

Yes, I go and rob a bank with my friend and get rewarded by the town mayor for teamwork

That is an absolutely disgusting and entirely unrelated and unneeded comparison.

It’s a common saying in my country :joy:. Not all teamwork should be granted

I don’t think it’s called “balancing” when you overhaul the entire game around one object so that it would fit. And for what? To keep a feature that currently adds nothing good to the game, is annoying for everyone interacting with it (even indirectly), and will be of undetermined usefulness after the overhaul?

Sure, it’s an option I suppose. I’d rather judge the game on what it offers now rather than based on promises and imagination, though.

I appreciate your opinion. You and I probably have different opinions. I enjoy realisticness and love things that make the game look like actual war. That’s why i think balancing mortars will be better than just deleting them. They will not be very useful but also not useless. Players will have opportunity to clear out positions full of camping enemies and easily get 5-10 kills before they run out of mortar ammo. Right now, mortar can blob shells without limit and that’s what kills the game

Not allowing ammo refills wouldnt be a major overhaul, as that is already done with explosive launchers like the bazooka, as well as pistols.

Removing the engineer from the squad wouldnt be a major overhaul either, as it is just changing 1 variable in the squad register. Just gotta find a way to force people to not have one in there already, which they probably have

Changing weapons to not function inside of spawn protection shouldnt be hard either, knowing it used to be that way in war thunder when you entered the enemy’s spawn.

I agree, it is a good idea. It would be also cool if they just remove the distance from the zone so people can actually be creative with mortars and measure the range by themselves

That’s what I was talking about. Removing the ability to refill ammo for mortars is by no means a major change. It also won’t be enough to make mortars beneficial to the game instead of being detrimental.

On the other hand, making all maps larger is a very significant change that will affect everything. And while I think I would like to see some bigger (and/or more open) maps, I don’t think it’s something that should be done just for the sake of mortars.

Mortars have plenty of potential as a precise way to knock out MGs or AT guns.
However, those rarely get tagged on the map so they resort to blindly bombarding an objective.

Players are never going to properly tag anything between not thinking to and the unreliable tag system, but why not take advantage of the bot system and let bots tag special positions that they aggro on?

no,but add a timer for resupply.

In addition to solutions proposed by others I suggest to add auto spotting of mortar.
So: when you shoot mortar enemies can see blured circle on the map where the mortar is shooting from. More you shoot smaller the circle thus more precise localisation. It would allow for counterbattery fire.
Of course position of the circle should be a bit randomised so mortar isn’t always on the middle of it because otherwise it would allow players to judge position of the mortar after it shots for the first time and take it down quickly.

The mortar firing sound is very loud and distinct. Players should get rewarded for recognizing it and homing in on it simply by using their headphones to determine where it comes from, instead of just simplifying everything. It also would be very unrealistic.

I know, i made 2 posts involving larger maps (one was about new game mode and the other one about larger maps in general), and I received quite positive reaction from other players. If we bring this topic more and more, devs might do something about it

Well, I don’t have echolocation skills. And I can’t imagine other way to judge how far is the mortar, exept “close” and “far” whitch don’t give you any help in seting range on your mortar.
Also it wouldn’t be unrealistic. You can count and predict location from whitch enemy is fireing. Yes, it requires quite a lot of skill/computing power but it’s duable. I want to simplyfiy it so players don’t have to own fire control computer to predict the location.
Ps. Mayby make this skill to unlock on the end of upgrade tree?
