I don’t know if you remember, but I once suggested the Sino-Japanese campaign on the forum, yet there was no official response. The people of China, and even the whole of Asia, also made great sacrifices to resist the Japanese invasion in WW2, from 1931 or even earlier, to 1945, a decade of hard resistance, and I was not willing for this to be ignored.
It was then that Erika suggested that I implement the Chinese battlefield in the mod. Great idea, so I started with this battle: August Storm
During the Second World War, the Soviet Union launched a surprise attack on Japanese-controlled north-eastern China between August and September 1945, quickly breaking through Japanese lines and cutting off the Japanese retreat from Korea. Fighting in conjunction with the Soviets were Chinese anti-Japanese guerrillas (mostly the CCP’s Northeast Anti-Japanese Alliance, supported by the Comintern) and Mongolian troops. At the same time, Chinese troops counter-attacked from northern China to hold back Japanese reinforcements.
The terrain in Manchuria was not favourable for an attack, with mountains, forests and forts all over the place being annoying. The Soviets assaulted from several directions but were hampered in the east by the large number of Japanese fortifications, so they resorted to infiltration operations to bypass the Japanese forts, leaving it to the follow-on forces to surround and dispose of them.
On their way to the Japanese First Front Headquarters in Mudanjiang City, the Soviet advance guard was blocked by the Japanese: they blew up railway bridges and relied on forts and fortifications for defence. The Soviets felt that a strong attack would cause heavy losses and that the advance army did not have much supply and that getting caught up in an offensive here would slow down the intended plan for the whole campaign.
So they worked with the guerrillas, who blew up a Japanese train causing the Japanese to relax their defences in the direction of the airfield, and made a surprise flanking attack while the Japanese sent troops to investigate the train explosion, capturing a small airfield (which had been abandoned by the Japanese but was still operational),
thus allowing the Soviets to attack the forts, small armoured trains, villages and Japanese airfields
and hangars on the other side of the river from two directions.
After blowing up the Japanese heavy artillery and radar, the pontoon bridges were erected and the railway lines fully repaired, which in turn allowed a rapid attack on the big cities by rail to complete the planned combat mission.
This was the Soviet operational plan in this Mod. Needless to say, the natural task for the Japanese was to hold the area for as long as possible to buy time for the rest of the forces.
Note: I have added automatic machine guns to the Japanese forts, which, like normal machine guns, can be manned and destroyed, as well as automatic howitzers (which have no armour piercing capability and no explosive range, mainly for atmosphere).
Aircraft on both sides had to take off from airfields (the Japanese could also take off seaplanes from the lake) and there was a lot of anti-aircraft fire in the vicinity of airfields on both sides, so aircraft pilots needed to be very careful. The Japanese have a large number of tanks (however weakly armoured and underpowered, mainly for anti-infantry use) at their disposal and have some powerful anti-tank guns that can destroy Soviet tanks with a single shot. The Soviets also have some tanks, mainly old BT-7s, but also some T-34/76 and a few T-34/85, with the IS2 (1944) as decoration XD
The mod is still in beta and I have solved most of the problems and it is basically playable. The balance I have tested initially, but it is not perfect. There are some problems that I already know about but can’t fix (for example, the turret of the armoured train often shakes up and down), and I would appreciate any suggestions you can give me.
Thanks for advising and playing!
