Best US fighter is the P-47 for CAS and P-51 for sexiness
I have P-47 and it’s a bomber ( I actually have two of them, the other one I got as reward squad). But I also have third slot for a plane.
The dilema for me is, should I invest into M26 tank or should I grind for AP-4C if it’s better than P37.
The F4U has what? 8 HVAR’s compared to the P-38’s 6 M8’s? Plus I believe it’s the 20mm variant?
You’re basically going to be trading horsepower for firepower. The P-38 is literally a drag car of a plane. Stupidly fast, and has really good survivability granted you’re not shot in the tail. The F4U’s got 4 AN/M2 20mm’s rather than the 1 AN/M2 20mm and 4 AN/M2 .50’s. And 2 more total rockets on the F4U that are better rockets over all
So do you want speed or gunpowder is the question to answer here

Gunpowder: F4U, or as it’s called in game, the AP-4C
Is it that much difference in speed? The P38 has 703 speed whilce F4U has 670, so I don’t see much difference in it. If the speed is drastic, then I would rather go with P-38 because even basic machine guns can tear out any plane and in that instance the speed would be the greatest advantage.
You will never reach those speeds. Not a single time
That being said, I appreciate the extra firepower 8 HVAR’s would give me over 6 M8’s for assisting my team via bullying enemy infantry
AP-4C is much better than P-38 in high BR battle.
It has 8 x HVAR instead of 6 x M8 rockets.
Also 4 x 20 mm cannons instead of 1 x 20 mm.
Also more ammo per cannons.
P38 is a nice plane but for lower BR.
The best US fighter is the Tempest (sorry it’s UK and premium).
After that, the Spitfire is the best (sorry also UK and no bombs/rockets).
After that, the AP-4C.

i would say P-51 is better solely because of the lack of carrier spawns on the solomon island maps

AP is a good choice
Because he has strong firepower
But taking off from the Pacific is a disadvantage
So I use P51D more often
But the P51 itself has the problem of diving off course
The new bombing mechanism makes it more difficult for bombs to hit tanks

It is not recommended to use P38 in environments above level 3
Because the M8 is not very effective against the Tiger series tanks
Ok so I should go with P-38? Because if it has a better speed, it means it’s better against enemy planes. Have in mind that I can use P-47 in the same round, and I mainly use that plane for attacking ground.
Is it advisable to use Spitfire and Tempest at BR V? Because I am using P-38 in BR V and I have no problem with it. However if AP-4C is better than I will invest into that.
Literally best and most universal attacker plane in the game.

Could you explain the new bombing mechanism? I haven’t felt a diffrence, but maybe if I know it now, I will be better at bombing.
The thing is I already have two P 47, so I am set for bombing. I am purely looking for a figther. Also I managed to destroy a tiger tank with my P38, by landing hits on the engine and litting it on fire. (Although that could also be from precise rocket attack on that part).
Also are HVAR rockets better than M8?
Everyone seem to underestimate the p51 for some reason.
If you don’t take into account the Tempest (premium), it’s the best fighter allies got, to engage in dogfighting. The Spitfire is wonderful too, but too slow for high br.
As for p38 and Corsair… unless you can boom and zoom with them, you will always loose in a dogfight with them (not nimble enough)
Now keep in mind your question is about which is the best fighter. It’s role is hunting other planes. So while other planes may be more versatile with ground attack capabilities than the p51, none will allow you to go against enemy top tier fighters as well as it. A good p51 pilot can best the top tier Japanese average pilot.

It’s always better to have one attacker and one fighter plane (rather than just 2 attackers or just 2 fighters). So if one of your teammates is blocking one of those, you can still play the other.
The most reasonable combination for high BR MM queue (BR 3 - 5) is P47 (tech tree version, the event one is much worse loadout wise) and Corsair.
P-47 and AP-4C is all you need, great line up

I think P-51D is better than both.
The bombs are more reliable in taking out heavy tanks than rockets and it has comparable agility to the late p-38 and corsair. HVAR might be better to wipe out enemy infantry in an open area, but I think it’s the duty of allied air to hunt heavy tanks.

Exactly.
Yes p38 and Corsair got rockets… but there’s better in that role, namely attackers such as the p47. Or even the A20 (Seriously the gunners finally learnt to aim, the bastards!!!)
The p51 is much more nimble than even the Corsair and can rival top tier enemy pure fighters thanks to it’s very high speed but especially it’s climb ability.
I say this as a frequent Japanese plane pilot. I love their fighters, everyone know how good they are. When I fly the top ones, there’s only ONE allies plane I’m wary of, it’s the p51. It’s the only one that may engage in a dogfight with me and give me trouble.
P38 AND Corsair are preys. Plain as. They can be good if I try to go face to face in a straight line… that’s it.
Of course if a Tempest appears, I get on the edge of my seat and enter serious mode. That thing is dangerous! (But it’s premium).
Because with bombs it is kinda cringe in fighting other air → any actual air fight means you have to immediately ditch them → even if you win…congrats, now you have to go back to get more lol → half the time something else spawns that forces you to ditch again lol
Also there is a reason it’s BR3. At the end of the day it doesn’t really climb all that well, doesn’t really go all that fast in horizontal flight either, doesn’t turn all that well…it’s just aggressively mid. And the bombs aren’t the easiest to use because it also tends to side slide like crazy unless you fly the “please flak me” bombing run approach
It is true it is a better fighter than the AP-4C…because the AP-4C is a typical, total US seal clubber of an airplane. Tons of guns, only able to dogfight when falling out of the sky, you can’t see shit behind you. Against sentient pilots it seems the only somewhat viable thing you can do is to just do a head on and hope for the best - almost anything you are going to face can dance around you
