On this picture, you can see the M-1910/30 Maxim which was produced during ww2 from 1941-1945. This MG was russia’s heavy machine gun.
Despite being an older design, Maxim offered many advantages over the DP-27 and that’s why it was produced until 1945. This machine gun can be russia’s stationary MG.
Maxim’s pros/cons compared to the DP-27:
+Higher rate of fire
+Can carry a lot more ammo
+Has a shield which protects from SMG fire
-too heavy to be carried by a one soldier
-water cooled instead of air cooled
This MG is much closer to german MG-34/42 in terms of firepower and I think it will be a better solution than introducing DP-27 on a bunch of sandbags.
Also tell me if you want MG-34 on tripod or should it stay on sandbags
Depends how complex you make it.
You can say that if you overheat, you can swap barrel (play animation) to cool down the gun instantly
Just that, nothing more, would be the base
If you want more complexity, actual spare barrels, taking up inventory space, could be implemented.
MG42 is obvious placeholder so we are getting something for sure: Maxim vs MG34 is good idea. My idea of balancing them:
MG34:
-higher firerate
-more vulnerable to overheating - one should shoot with bursts
-changable barrel - if overheated would come back to action faster
Maxim:
-lower firerate
-can lay suppresive fire for longer period of time without stopping
-if overheated it takes more time to fire it again
-shield protecting from small caliber firearms
The current MGs used to take a lot of shots to take down before and had to be changed to the current damage model after repeated complaints. Makes me wonder, how do you bring balance if Maxims are added to the game?
Ideally there should be both - right now there is only overheating mechanic for stationary MGs and player who knows how to use them properly can shoot them almost non stop. Reload mechanic would balance a little and make it more realistic - one belt had 250 rounds both for MG34 and Maxim.
It’s not a drawback, more like trade off. You get less heating of a barrel but you have to change water. Gun is already heavy as hell so additional X liters of water does’t make much difference in manuver warfare.
NO!!! No MG on sandbags!!! It’s a placeholder and shouldn’t be in the final game under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!
I guess you want MG34 on tripod not MG42 because of balance? I don’t like this idea but actually it’s historical so I guess I can’t do anything.
You shouldn’t compare those two weapons, it’s like lorry vs bike. They serve two completely different roles.
Now that is interesting! I was looking for some good ideas for soviet MG and finally somebody has one!
My idea is:
Give germans Lafette as equipment so they can place and mount MG on it while SU has heavier, less mobile MG but better prottected.
I suspect you are sick of me linking this post but I don’t want to write it again and again if there is discussion about MG.
MG-42 is not much better than the MG-34.
MG-42 is cheaper which doesnt really effect the game
MG-34 is more stable to shoot and thats why it was never fully replaced by the MG-42
Both guns are very similar so it wont make any difference
There could be sandbags to really make it “MG nest” and give a bit of protection and allow better placement on uneven terrain. But of course MG itseft should be mounted on lafette or it wheels in case of maxim, and not magicaly attached on top of the bags.
