Technically, they DID join the war before then, but only to land-grab Poland when they were fighting the Germans. In typical Chamberlain fashion, the UK and France did nothing about it.

Its actually quite funny, paying the war reparations helped the country industrialize heavily.
And then again, this is yet another paper victory of soviets.

This unfortunately is true, winland did indeed win by keeping its independency.
And soviets that actually had worlds largest military by -39 population of 170m ?
Failed to conquer a country with population of what ? 3 million ?
It indeed requires a total loser to not meet your goals with such odds.
So yes, in this exact case winners indeed had to pay for losers, which at this point was at the end of ww2 when soviets were carried by other allied nations.
Well you dont see too often nation of 3million mostly farmers beating a worlds largest military.

Finland benefited from incredibly poor infrastructure and the Mannerheim line.
USSR suffered from political interference and a mass assault doctrine that didn’t favour the terrain.
Even though it was ultimately a loss for Finland, they certainly cost the Russians a shed-ton of lives and equipment.
I think we can leave it there.
