Honest question for my enlightenment

I have no strong feelings on the matter; I am legitimately curious why old threads that get new posts are locked. I have seen some forums with threads going back ten years.

Why is necroposting bad? No trying to troll; just trying to understand.

Who knows. Maybe the mods don’t like it. Maybe they have some legit reason

Because people are trying to participate in discussions that are mostly outdated.

Example:

Someone was complaining about something. The issue was fixed afterwards.
And then a few months later some expert comes along and says there is no such problem. (What a surprise! Since the discussion is outdated and the issue was fixed long ago)

But it’s arguable closing all older topics. Since even some several old years topics can still be up to date. As the issue discussed has never been addressed.
I guess moderators are just lazy to study context of each such topic. And they’re just closing them preemptively.

Also it just leads to people having to creating new posts and recycle the old post or link to it. Also if they set up rules like it goes necro after x days of no posts but a longer period for more popular threads. People might work to keep threads out of the necro section and thus increase activity.

The rules are already set in place. Threads over 1 month old without activity are considered necro. Obviously some topics, like the Mods and News sections are immune to necro.

Bit rude, no??

I lurk the forums for over 15 hours a day on average, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to read through every several months (or even years) old thread to “study the context” of it before deciding whether it’s necro or not. It’s not about laziness at all.

Call it however you want. I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I just didn’t want to spend five minutes thinking of a word that would more accurately reflect the situation. (You can call me lazy for that ;P)

Perhaps the word “unwillingness” would be more fitting.

I think the context I wanted to communicate is understandable either way.

It’s really bizarre.

When you start creating a thread the forum UI suggests similar threads to you.
I presume, to avoid spamming the same thing over several threads.

So you choose to continue discussion in that same thread, but then the mods come in and close it, stating that you should start the same exact thread about exact same thing again.

Like this thread about handbrake for APCs for example

There was a perfectly good thread where people shared their opinions on handbrake.

Nothing was outdated, nothing was misleading.

But when I decided to support that thread instead of literally creating a clone, the thread was locked and I had to create a clone for some reason.

Feels like server bloat, honestly.

You know what would be good? ‘Acknowledgment’.

Like we wouldnt need to keep posting about handbrakes if we knew the devs were working on it.

Maybe they could have a ‘tick’ like our ‘like’ button for good suggestions (especially ones mentioned by multiple people and/or with multiple likes) to say hey we hear your concerns, its written down and it will be addressed eventually.

Obviously for things like map or content suggestions those would not be guaranteed but like Yep, guys, we like your suggestions about ‘Battle for Italy’ (for example), we would like to make that in future. (when that is we dont know) We will not however make Monte Cassino for ‘XYZ’ reasons.

But yeah things like handbrakes or reducing the pre-merge era overheat for M13 machine guns, those should be formally acknowledged and addressed.
