Handbrake for APCs

us6-louisville2014-2-7w-9

This is the cab of a Studebaker truck. See, it has a handbrake.

DarkFlow for God’s sake give APCs a handbrake!
Let us press shift or whatever and it engages the parking brake.

We should be able to park trucks on slopes/hills without them rolling backwards.

Even on flat ground I find APCs just wont stop even when Ive already slowed down. Usually my only option is to exit, run ahead or behind, crouch and try and use my soldier to slow it. (often to no avail).

There’s been times when Ive slowed the vehicle to idling but it just wont stop so it just slowly rolls and rolls and rolls down a hill and is gone.

This is an FPS not driving simulator. I see NO reason why we shouldnt be able to quickly drive up (likely under fire), park behind some cover and the vehicle actually bloody stops and stays.

We should NOT have to keep sliding back and forth to get the thing to stop, and as Ive said we should be able to stop on hills.

Adding a handbrake is very easy to do and it would be up to the player to engage it which I think is fine. Like real life if you stop on a slope and do not engage the handbrake then yeah it goes sliding back down but you should be able to stop that.

Even tanks need a brake.

I realized the need for a handbrake almost immediately when APCs were first released and I got the Premium half-track. I remember finding the perfect spot close to a river, hidden away from the enemy sight. When I tried to spawn again to my surprise I wasn’t able to, and when I went to see what happened to my APC I found it at the bottom of the river…

Also traction in difficult terrain needs to be seriously improved. This is so infuriating in map biomes like Normandy for example, which is full of random craters on the ground almost everywhere. And any old map that features train tracks were totally never considered for half-tracks in the game and this is evident when trying to drive across the train tracks. Tracked vehicle just get stuck and this is so detrimental for flanking the game’s objectives.

I hope it’d be easy to add to console controls as well.

This is a great idea, I also have some suggestions of my own, found here: Better APC driving characteristics

Engine sounds would be great as well.

Agree with all of the above.

I also find APCs (cant comment on USSR or Japan but Id imagine its the same) rather slow. Like I dont expect a racing car, and I understand being slower on rough terrain than roads.
But these things are slloooww.

Just better handling overall (train tracks especially, also crossing trenches).

Oh and one more thing:

Make APCs spawn in normal positions… Like not jammed between two trees/between a hangar and radio tower/ blocked in by tank hulks etc.

It so long to brake with the APC it take like 10 meters to stop completly

Yes, sometimes my studebaker fall to the enemy spawn :joy:

meanwhile, use manual transmision and you can put a homemade ‘‘handbrake’’ meanwhile

Good chance to know the gear we are because we have no UI for APC

I personally haven’t played the US Studebaker yet, but the Japanese tech three APC and the Soviet’s GAZ truck are quite mobile when they reach certain speed. Probably the fastest APCs in the game. As much as I like the early WW2 aesthetic of the German’s half-track APC from the tech three. I think it’s quite slow and this makes it very vulnerable, same thing for the premium one. So in that regard I feel they should get the Opel Blitz as an alternative option in the tech three.

On the other hand, the limited event Universal Carrier for the Allies is probably one of the best APCs in the game, in my opinion. It’s highly mobile, has nice speed and it’s super sneaky for hiding behind a bush, a rock, inside a shack, or whatever. My absolutely favorite one to play.

Thank you for your comment.

I agree, I wasnt sure if it was just me but I found the Sdfkz (standard, not premium) to be horridly slow. Like I genuinely believe Ive moved faster in a French tank in War Thunder… in reverse!

I too support the Opel Blitz. However the main argument against has been Opel Blitzs are already in game as generated drive-able vehicles so presumably people are concerned a Opel Blitz APC would be too easy to hide/difficult to distinguish.

My solution would be either another German truck, an Italian truck, or a captured French truck.

I havent been able to use the Universal Carrier though Ive seen them driving quite fast. As an Australian I really want a tech tree UC squad since its what UK + Commonwealth used and I also want a British/Commonwealth APC squad.

Ive suggested multiple times that the devs add the Australian Universal Carrier. Our version was different to the standard UK version (event squad) and only had a single fixed Vickers machine gun. There were also Canadian variants. Either way there’s no reason why we cant have a tech tree UC (including an unarmed one if necessary) that would still be different from the event one.

I believe adding an Italian truck and Australian UC for Axis and Allies tree respectively would be the best option because then players would have a choice between tracked or wheel APC for both factions and also a choice between German OR Italian and American OR UK/Commonwealth.

Id further propose that BR I-II APCs be the current trucks. BR III-V would be halftracks like the M3 Halftrack (USA) and Sdfkz (Germany) with a single machine gun. I believe the Soviets had their own version of a M3 Halftrack-like vehicle called a BTR?
