Greyzone & Guerillas

The Greyzone and Guerilla squads have caused a lot of debate in the Enlisted community.

The latter was added to supposedly fix the problems of the former.

The purpose of this post is to reassess these two issues.

No one is sure what the ‘guerilla’ squad actually IS since they are a mixture of guerilla, commando, resistance fighter, regular army unit. Other posts have noted how in real life guerillas and partisans had to rely on ammunition and weapons they found rather than having a bunch of ammo on them.

I use guerillas for Allies but 95% of this is because they are Australian. I wanted an Australian squad for ages and they have a cool uniform (albeit without the iconic slouch hat or digger hat…) so it would be a little silly to demand an Australian squad and then not use one when it is added.
If the guerillas had just been another random USA squad I probably would never have bothered with them.

Although I have found guerillas to be good for destroying tanks when I use them, my squadmate is very annoyed by the idea of being shot in the back constantly as a result of a squad that is rather detached from reality.

I had a game with Japan before this post and the guerillas completely ruined our match. It was literally build a rallypoint and straight away it was destroyed.

I am inclined to agree with those that wish guerillas had never been added.

Indeed, not only do guerillas suck when you’re on the receiving end, but when you use them there are multiple issues:

1. TNT charges are bugged. You drop a charge, then have to press 6 multiple times to try and get the plunger to appear. Now if you havent died already you get the plunger but then you have the same problem switching back to the charge.
Swapping between charges and plunger should be effortless, but it’s not. This is extremely frustrating and very often gets one killed.

2. Guerillas can’t use vehicles. Thinking of real life guerillas, partisans, commandos and so forth, using vehicles is precisely what they would’ve done. Like in game if you find a motorcycle you should be able to use that.
At present one has to run all the way across the map hoping not to get killed. I understand the intention was balance, but what this means is its very difficult for guerillas to even get to the damn greyzone in the first place. Consider for instance the valley in one of the Bulge maps where there’s always someone in a tank or AT gun on either hill abusing the greyzone.
Boats especially are required in order to flank on Pacific maps. The whole point of guerillas is flanking but the fact you cant use boats means you’re forced to either do a rather long swim which isnt practical, or go over a bridge or river crossing head on to the enemy.

3. Spawn Protection. I completely understand why this exists. However the ‘big red circle’ is a pain in the to avoid especially when there’s two of them. It is even worse when a tank hides close to or within one of these protected areas thereby being impossible to kill and defeating the reason guerillas were added in the first place (recall that guerillas cant equip AT weapon)

I have seen other posts rightly complaining how guerillas are just OP assault squads and for many players arent even used as an anti-greyzone weapon. I have discussed above why guerillas arent that great at taking out tanks in the greyzone anyway.

Which leads me to my main point.

Why the hell couldn’t the devs just remove the greyzone or stop tanks using it?

All because of this obstinate insistence upon a special zone where enemy tanks can spam HE and not get killed themselves we have had to add a poorly thought out squad that makes little sense and is providing a negative experience for many players.

Remember, the greyzone still exists and people are still abusing it.

So can we please either:
1. Make out of bounds out of bounds for everyone
OR
2. Remove greyzone altogether.

By fixing the greyzone we will remove the ‘need’ for the guerilla squads.

For that I would keep the squads themselves but reform them to be regular army units, perhaps ‘demolition experts’ or something ( so no more infinite ammo and no more go behind enemy lines nonsense)

we don’t need guerillas if darkflow designed maps with common sense. I think maps need to be redesigned to the point that tanks and at gun cannot have direct line of sight to the battlefield unless they are in the battlefield themselves.

Agreed. Like I mentioned that Bulge map and there’s also a couple of Pacific maps where the tanks just drive up the hill that is out of bounds.

Recently I played in Normandy with alliés (br3).
2 players used guérilla squads on the German’s side (premium + TT) at the same time… It was impossible for US to use tank /apc. Move from the spawn, kill by mine, tnt, or other.
It was in same…

the only guaranteed way is bigger maps sorry i don’t want to move 5-10 minutes to get to the point.

even if you created enclosed areas you would also have to make flat maps to avoid people shooting down into the area.

just prevent people from shooting into or out of the gray zone this would prevent tanks from abusing the gray zone.

it would let people enter the battlefield without people killing people as soon as they spawn into the game.

how do you prevent a team from advancing to withing shooting distance of the spawn and you know spawn camping without a gray zone.

Feel bad for them … i’m mostly an aggressive player in tank (hate staying stationary) but the fact that now most of squad are equiped with AT Infantry and most of player use TNT/Explo pack on most of their normal Inf make literrally tank a free kill.
No one is complaining about tank playing is close support role because they are mostly the first destroy when not played correctly AND If we add that allied infantry around isn’t capable of Protecting you

I’m not adding the fact that tank can still be killed by PLANE in an easy way so

I CAN Completly Understand the way they feel and so be forced to camp in the greyzone

For my part I use Guerrilla has a more versatile assault squad depending on the objectiv ofc
they are very good for defending and when your team isn’t that bad you can push a little in front to slow down the attacker

Guerrilla aren’t that op, but most of tank player are Blind , ofc you can always have some blindspot but some have litterally the entire view as blindspot

I mean I can deal with greyzoning tanks just fine, it’s that the addition of this braindead spawn camping, rally mining piece of shit squad that annoys me so much. Darkflow literally turned off their already low common sense completely when they pander to noobs crying about greyzoners.

No, it’s not. Have you even played them?

Typically, I will say that it was a poor rally point and you should’ve built it in a better spot
However
Guerrillas make it so there is no “better spot.” It’s all in danger zone now

Man if only there was a way to kill a tank in the gray zone without having to physically enter said gray zone with infantry……1000lb bomb slowly fades into view

This is something I can’t stand. My teammates are ALL OF ABOUT 20 FEET FROM ME AND THEY STILL LET SOME RETARD JUMP ON MY TANK AND TNT ME!
I ALWAYS try to save friendly tank when I see someone trying to blow it sky high. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don’t. I always try though. I NEVER get that consideration from others. The second someone gets near and I don’t have a convenient wall next to me to blow an HE shell off of, I’m dead. No teammates to help. Ever

Mobility > cowardice

Some POS leaning out a window waiting for you to spawn on a rally point to either pull the plunger or just mow you down

Paratroopers should’ve been the Guerrillas from the start, they should have ability to land into enemy territory and destroy vehicles and rallies.

ahahahaha … wait your serious…that would be the death of the game an enemy that can instantly deploy into the gray and spawn camp

I do the same and I feel quite happy when i successfully protect my allied tank vs those TNT madman

Well If you are a new player and just find that you can get some kill while camping and being protected from most of infantry many of them will stay like that

Starter tank are way too horrible, overheat every time and every tnt/ explo pack man will kill you .
If you learn camping in BR1 you won’t change for the next it’s a rework we must have about tnt and explo pack
Those should be locked for engi/AT this way starter player could play a little more aggressive than have to camp for staying alive

‘Tell me you didn’t read my post without telling me you didn’t read my post.’

I literally said I use the Australian guerillas, mainly because theyre the only tech tree Australian squad.

And yes, it is very difficult. Can depend on the map but the point still stands.

I don’t see how that’s evidence of anything. Everyone can made up this kind of argument just by looking at tech tree.

As long as you are playing smart, it is definitely not. Of course, if you expect free access to greyzone without dealing with enemies (or time wasting flanking). Then you will be disappointed.

But I really don’t see any proper reason why access to grey zone and thus spawn camping shouldn’t take any effort whatsoever.

This especially is guaranteed access to grey zone with full squad and without any effort in 15-30 secs.

No, there’s a reason why guerillas can’t and shouldn’t use vehicles.

Wow. You don’t like my opinion so therefore accuse me of lying.

Why on earth would I go to the trouble of making up a story about using Australian guerillas because I want an Australian squad for some silly internet debate???

I don’t understand your toxic attitude. You should get outside more mate.

I dont know, not much juggier than normal soldiers.

Well, I definitely wasn’t this dramatic when you accused me of not reading your ultra long post, lol. (Even though I did).

I still stand by my opinion that guerillas are the dev’s solution to a problem that never existed

Players complained about greyzone tanks because they refused to use existing anti-tank solutions:

  • Any plane
  • AT guns
  • AT soldiers (for low BR even mortarmen/radiomen are effective)
  • Other tanks

So, to appease players who cannot think critically, a special class of soldier that exists purely to camp enemy spawns and hunt down greyzone tanks was announced. This was received with mixed reactions, as many noted the class had a high potential for abusing game mechanics

When the Guerilla Warfare test server went live, comments unsurprisingly shifted from
“I can’t kill that greyzone tank, give me guerillas” to “now I’m being killed in my own spawn this is unfair remove guerillas”

To address this, after the test server concluded a spawn protection fix to nerf guerillas was added. A red artillery circle that instead of artillery, functions as another greyzone inside the already existing greyzone, dealing damage over time to guerillas and protecting infantry/vehicle spawns from them.

In my opinion, this was a poorly implemented and rushed change. Now those dastardly greyzone tanks can just sit inside another greyzone and be safe from guerillas(whose entire selling point was their ability to enter the greyzone). The better way to go about this would’ve been to just fix the greyzone issue directly instead of this convoluted mess, but here we are
