The Greyzone and Guerilla squads have caused a lot of debate in the Enlisted community.
The latter was added to supposedly fix the problems of the former.
The purpose of this post is to reassess these two issues.
No one is sure what the ‘guerilla’ squad actually IS since they are a mixture of guerilla, commando, resistance fighter, regular army unit. Other posts have noted how in real life guerillas and partisans had to rely on ammunition and weapons they found rather than having a bunch of ammo on them.
I use guerillas for Allies but 95% of this is because they are Australian. I wanted an Australian squad for ages and they have a cool uniform (albeit without the iconic slouch hat or digger hat…) so it would be a little silly to demand an Australian squad and then not use one when it is added.
If the guerillas had just been another random USA squad I probably would never have bothered with them.
Although I have found guerillas to be good for destroying tanks when I use them, my squadmate is very annoyed by the idea of being shot in the back constantly as a result of a squad that is rather detached from reality.
I had a game with Japan before this post and the guerillas completely ruined our match. It was literally build a rallypoint and straight away it was destroyed.
I am inclined to agree with those that wish guerillas had never been added.
Indeed, not only do guerillas suck when you’re on the receiving end, but when you use them there are multiple issues:
1. TNT charges are bugged. You drop a charge, then have to press 6 multiple times to try and get the plunger to appear. Now if you havent died already you get the plunger but then you have the same problem switching back to the charge.
Swapping between charges and plunger should be effortless, but it’s not. This is extremely frustrating and very often gets one killed.
2. Guerillas can’t use vehicles. Thinking of real life guerillas, partisans, commandos and so forth, using vehicles is precisely what they would’ve done. Like in game if you find a motorcycle you should be able to use that.
At present one has to run all the way across the map hoping not to get killed. I understand the intention was balance, but what this means is its very difficult for guerillas to even get to the damn greyzone in the first place. Consider for instance the valley in one of the Bulge maps where there’s always someone in a tank or AT gun on either hill abusing the greyzone.
Boats especially are required in order to flank on Pacific maps. The whole point of guerillas is flanking but the fact you cant use boats means you’re forced to either do a rather long swim which isnt practical, or go over a bridge or river crossing head on to the enemy.
3. Spawn Protection. I completely understand why this exists. However the ‘big red circle’ is a pain in the to avoid especially when there’s two of them. It is even worse when a tank hides close to or within one of these protected areas thereby being impossible to kill and defeating the reason guerillas were added in the first place (recall that guerillas cant equip AT weapon)
I have seen other posts rightly complaining how guerillas are just OP assault squads and for many players arent even used as an anti-greyzone weapon. I have discussed above why guerillas arent that great at taking out tanks in the greyzone anyway.
Which leads me to my main point.
Why the hell couldn’t the devs just remove the greyzone or stop tanks using it?
All because of this obstinate insistence upon a special zone where enemy tanks can spam HE and not get killed themselves we have had to add a poorly thought out squad that makes little sense and is providing a negative experience for many players.
Remember, the greyzone still exists and people are still abusing it.
So can we please either:
1. Make out of bounds out of bounds for everyone
OR
2. Remove greyzone altogether.
By fixing the greyzone we will remove the ‘need’ for the guerilla squads.
For that I would keep the squads themselves but reform them to be regular army units, perhaps ‘demolition experts’ or something ( so no more infinite ammo and no more go behind enemy lines nonsense)
^Commandos in Greece. Do these men look like well-equipped juggernauts to you?
